New Zealand Timelapse | critique k+

I went to NZ over the summer and did alot of filming and also found some time to do a series of timelapses, this is the product of that. Please tell me what you thought of it and how I could improve it.

Pretty cool timelapse!

Few points of critique (of course):
the first image looks really blown out, just like the last one: super blown out sky and crushed the dark foreground. You could use a GND for that (though I take it you don't have one).
Apart from that you could switch the different themes a bit. For example, after a while I was like: is it just going to be skies or what? And at about that time you changed to the timelapse on the boat, which, for the record, I really liked. You could maybe change up skies, boat, and shots of persons a bit so that it doesn't get divided into three parts.
Then there's the weird cut at 0:35, it's more or less the same clip but it cuts and doesn't pan anymore, what's up with that?

Other than that I liked it, some really beautiful terrain out there!

cheers man, thanks for the critique, i think what i was going for with the shot at 0:35 was that it sort of showed a closer shot of the mountains, but ye maybe it didn't work so well. The way i ordered it was in that order that i visited different places, that why it was that order but. But i do agree it could have been better ordered.

that was pretty sick man. over the course of this summer and fall semester i've been getting into timelapses alot, few suggestions

- colors in some of them were a bit strange, not sure why
- could change the camera focal length, depending on what lens you are using (and camera)
- maybe a bit more speed manipulation, could be something like a longer lapse in general then sped up or a slow start then it progressively gets quicker

still nice shots though, awesome scenery

watched a few of your timelapses, there looking good. I was just wondering how you thought the colours looked weird? I thought they look nice and vibrant but obviously i have a biased opinion.
And when you say focal depth do you mean f stop. I tend to go for a high f stop so everything is more or less in focus. I prefer to watch timelapses where everything is in focus and i like to have at least a foreground and a background or a middle ground and a background, makes it more interesting in my opinion.
i know what you mean about speed manipulation but (again in my opinion (not necessarily correct)) i feel that a timelapse edit flows better if you keep an even speed.

Thanks for the feedback and i would love to hear more of your advise, all very useful stuff.

thanks man

-by focal length i mean the millimeter of your lens. i usually shoot with my sigma 10-20mm lens, but also shoot with my 50mm and kit. just gives you a different sort of perspective and angle. I don't shoot everything on my sigma, even though the colors on my sigma look better. anyway..
-by colors, there is just a vibrance on your clouds and blues just seemed, almost too vibrant, like you cranked it up a little too much. sometimes when you want to something saturated, for example, you crank the saturation up but it creates an unrealistic color. just a thought, not really criticizing.
-the speed is always subjective. its really what you feel your environment looks best as. if its an even speed then thats okay, i have no problem with that. The one thing i will still stand by is the length of the lapse. for a sunset or a partly cloudy day i will go for no less than an hour lapse, and for as long as two. stars i do no less than two hours. just a suggestion.

still liked yours nonetheless, just some constructive suggestions according to my experiences

The problem I had was that I was moving about the country a lot and we were traveling on a daily basis so I only every had relatively short amounts of time to do my timelapses. But yes it would have been nice to have a bit more time. If i go back i will definitely make a concerted effort to put a fair amount of time aside to shoot.

Man North America is awesome and an amazing place for timelapse. You have such varied terrain and loads of different environments. Not to mention the best parks in the world. I have been to Washington and New York but i would love to actually do some skiing in America and maybe do a few timelapses.

Really can't go wrong time-lapsing in NZ - such a beautiful country. I particularly like the ferry TL.

If you want a critique the only things I'd say were:
-The cut at :35 was a little weird because it didn't change the angle or scenery enough for me to realize it was a cut
- A night TL would have been great.

where are you from? North america has some awesome terrain and landscapes you just have to live in the right area. i live in illinois and now michigan, so not real mountainous haha

Ye your right about that cut, im quite annoyed actually because i watched the pre compression and post compression clips and in the pre compression file the cut is on the beat and fits perfectly but it must have got off beat slightly in compression. And you right I didn't vary things up in the next clip.
I am hoping to do a night time timelapse edit soon!
