Footage I shot with PBP in January

In early January I met up with Walker, Godbout, and Cody Carter in Spokane, WA to do some urban filming. While we didn't get a ton of stuff, we still came away with some shots that I was pretty stoked on.

I threw this little edit together at 2 AM last March just for fun (hence the over-the-top dramatic music), but I decided to post it publicly recently.

Hope you guys like it!

For sure. I edited this back before I started mixing fast and slow more consistently (after I got a couple comments like that).


and i'm not afraid to say it, i love it when edits are 100% slow motion. could watch that shit for days.

I am with you there, I love conformed footage/slow-mo of any kind, I just get woried that people are gonna be like TOO MUCH SLOW MO, GAY, etc.

but I also love nice 24p shots on the contrary....

Whenever I see edits that are 100% conformed I just think that the filmmaker is using it as a crutch or is being lazy. It smooths out camera movement and makes everything feel super dramatic, which makes it easier to have a nice looking edit. I'm guilty of this myself. For example if I have to shoot hand held I always shoot in 60p so I can conform it to smooth out camera shake. I enjoy the challenge of shooting in both 24p and 60p and conforming only when it adds something to the shot or the moment in the edit.

Will, despite the abundance of slowmo, those were some nice looking shots, as usual.

In this case, the slow mo flowed with the msuic and fit the mood of the video quite well.

I agree with you on that.


Personally, I don't think regular speed would have mixed well with the slow motion in this edit. I also think that if regular speed is going to be used over a low key song, there better be some good audio, which I was also lacking in.

What were you shooting on? in the last rail shot, there's so much moire because of those orange sidewalls! never noticed that before.

Thanks guys! Shot on the T2i. used the 50mm f/1.4 for sure, also the 85mm f/1.8 i'm pretty sure, and possibly the 17-55mm f/2.8

sick man! stoked that your with poor boyz! I was actually really surprised with the moire on the sidewalls of the skis on one of the shots, not that it was your fault, I just had never seen that problem

For sure! it would not have made sense with this song to have normal speed shots. and its not like its a 10 minute edit.

Good stuff!

By default when watching ski videos I mute the volume. I was expecting dubstep when halfway through I unmuted it and was pleasantly surprised. I had to watch it from the beginning!

Also I LOVE the pacing of the opening sequence. The first measure of the song is played during the inrun, ollie, and rail. Then the second measure is sync'd to the kink all the way through to the landing. I also like how the skier pops on the augmented II chord, but ultimately lands back on the ground on the ending chord. The skier rises when the chord progression does, and lands when the progression resolves. It makes the trick flow as a unified whole and is expressed with very musical timing.

How'd you film the second, third and fourth clip?
I'm not really a video guy, but I'm just curious.
By second I mean the skier skiing past (shot of legs), the the third where he pops on and the fourth where lands it.
Is that one trick? Or is the second clip just from any trick before that? Because the temperature looks different or something.

And also: were you filming with two cams (and if so, did you use like a assistant or something to handle the other camera?)

Im sure they're just different shots from different tricks, that happens in almost every ski video you see. Skiers always do the same trick, or very similar tricks, multiple times. Also, alot of times after a skier stomps a trick, they will film in run shots, like the ones will had, its pretty standard.

Evan explained it pretty well, although things were actually a little different on this shoot. Because I was with Cody Carter (who directed Grand Bizarre), he was shooting the main angle. If I remember right, he was shooting a wide dolly angle from below looking up at the stair set. So while he was shooting that, I was shooting the "artsy" shots, which is when I got the tight in run shot.

Then I got bored shooting that tight angle and started shooting the angle you saw in the third shot. After that I moved down to the bottom to shoot the angle you saw in the fourth shot. He was trying similar tricks the whole time, so I was able to sequence them together. The temperatures should be pretty much the same because the lighting didn't change and I didn't readjust my white balance, but it's possible that they vary a little.

I'm really starting to feel this whole filmmaking stuff (after one day of shooting so far).
Too bad I can't afford a setup right now. I got about 1000€ saved up, but I'ma need that for the upcoming season, damnit :(
