Audi or subaru

i am looking at a few cars and there is a audi a4 2000 and a subaru outback 2003. which would you recomend?

an 03 outback is probably the most practical versatile car ever, and i want one desperately.

I've had experiences with both, and like everyone else said they're both different.

I've had my '98 A4 for almost 6 years, and it's been an experience. I put at least $1000 in maintenance every single year. Stuff just keeps breaking, honestly it's not worth the premium brand name, because, well it isn't any nicer than my friends newer Subarus. Just this fall I had to put in a new fuel pump, and it's already messing up and keeps saying  I have a low gas light when I have a quarter tank left. I love the way the car drives, it's sporty, great on the interstate, ridiculous in the snow for being lowered. Last year I led a group of cars down our mountain in almost two feet of snow.

Needless to say, I'm trying to sell it for a Subaru. Or a truck.

Also want to add in. The subaru will ALWAYS hold it's value higher than the Audi, unless you're looking at special editions or something.

Bluebook for my car (which has every option avail.) is around $3500. Subaru Outbacks and Imprezas are around $5000 for a base model here.

I just plan on running mine into the ground, or wait for someone to hit it.

I drive a 2000 a6, or I did before college, and they are awesome in the snow. Super fun car, and idk who said they weren't reliable, or that subareas are more reliable, but I have never had issues with mine. I'm not saying they are more reliable than subarus, and its not question that audis are more expensive to maintain, but that is what comes with owning a "sports car," and as long as you keep them well maintained and take care of them (as you should with any car), they will be awesome cars. Mine has over 145k, still plenty fast, and still runs great in the winter

super cheap and its a nissan so parts are easy to come by and registerring one is easy as hell

your "swag" does not go out the window when to car cost only 5k. I personally prefer the older BMW's and Audis with sharper less rounded of lines for example the e 36 or 46 m3 vs the e90. Just because a car is old does not mean it is in bad condition. Buying a older car with lowish k and good maintenance record is the way to go, you can get a way nicer car than if you buy new.

just wondering.. how much would it cost when its all said and done to be driving an r34 gtr in the US? and would you buy one overseas then import it? or look for it here? ive seen a few around here, i just dont know how much of a pain it would be.

i know a guy who imported a golf country, just registered it as a normal golf and thats all he had to do. id love to do that with an RS2 and register it as an S6. the RS2 is my dream car

Please do not listen to that guy, obviously u didnt pick on the enormous amount of sarcasm he posted lol (it is extremely tough importing an r34 gtr since the last company that tried was Motorex in California, they are not cheap to modify...only honda's are, and dont plan on buying one, u need maturity. My family owns the r33 GTR in the picture (my dad's beauty) and he laughs at people who act irresponsibly on the road. Most GTR owners in the Toronto area dont do silly things because it attracts way too much attention. (Drive the speed limit, and race on the track is my dad's motto) But i remember once we got pulled over twice in one day by multiple police officers one for asking if we had a Right Hand Drive sticker which we didnt, and the other simply the officer wanted to ask a few questions about the car.

2003 (B6) audi a4 from my dads girlfriend maybe, 5 speed manual 89000 miles quattro awd, 4000 dollars. stupid things like glove box stuck closed, a couple scratches on the windows, etc. manual is the only way i'm buying a car. does this sound good?

If you are interested in buying it, take it to a shop and have them look under the car to check for rust. And check under the hood, the last thing u need is a lemon that just sits and looks pretty

Rust and old cars are usually constant projects. If you want something practical, then the Subaru. If you want something fun but not so much practical, then go with the audi

You could look at a mitsubishi lancer...fun to drive, practical, AWD.
or you could look at a VW GTI...definitely one of my faves because of its Stance...most people at the Audi/VW meets put Air Ride suspension on their GTI's/Rabbits. Plus a lot of mods to put into them, and practical cars that can be for skiing as well (roof racks)

soooooo.... buy one without rust maybe?? not hard to do... 20 years isnt that old, especially for a car as over built as an e30. you can find rust free examples all over the place. and old cars are not constant projects, it depends on the specific car. there are 40 year old cars that will be more reliable than some brand new cars, it completely depends on the specific car you are looking at.

What year/model? E30s are known for rust and rot. Of course, it depends on where the car is from, but all the e30s I have looked at and owned have had rust issues. To me, any car thats 20 years or older is a project or hobby car, something for short trips. I would never buy an e30 as my primary vehicle. This is just my opinion and my experiences, yours may differ.

ive got a lot of experience with e30's, i own one as a beater, and i know 3 people with them.

mine is a beater, rusty, not in very good condition, but i got it extremely cheap. its got like 250,000 miles now. i drive the shit out of it, ill redline it leaving the parking lot 5 seconds after starting it in 10 degree weather, i jump it, neglect it, etc.. and for the 80,000 miles ive had it ive spent less than 1000 in maintenance. even including oil and coolant changes. everyone i know with an e30 has basically the same experience, and none of them are in particularly good condition. all have high miles.

if you spend around 5 grand for one in good condition with lowish miles, you will be set. if my neglected rust bucket can be more reliable than a new honda, then a good condition lowish mile one should be awesome.

I have a jeep. It gets me from point A to B just fine in any weather. Last week I had a flat tire for the first time and I have never changed a tire before. I know nothing about cars but I like my jeep. It's a boss. It has tinted windows, and is red like a fire truck. Sometimes I like to attach my jesus bobble head to the front of it, and the stock stero is Boston Acoustic. It's loud. Like the muffler has a screw loose and it is loud. I got my first ever BJ in it. The gas mileage is about 18mpg on average, but I hate the environment so I like to put it in neutral at every red light and rev the shit out of it so I get about 12mpg on average. I have slept in it before, I woke up next to a Turkish foreign exchange student in high school. He was a he. It made a nice bed because the back seats go down, and even being 6'3" with a turk next to me, I had plenty of room.

So if you want to have a nice bed, a nice car, fuck the environment, got lots of bj's and be heard, get a jeep.

well it depends- for a b5 rs4/rs2 etc usually around 10-15k plus the cost of the car and transportation


skylines however are a little bit cheaper to do, they generally cost between 7-10k to convert depending on the state(california it is straight up not gonna happen- people have them but they are illegal as hell)

the guys that bought my s4 have a gt-r for their shop- the issue with them and why you dont see more is the fact that to get any parts its either extremely expensive or wait from parts from Japan.

sign the petition on whitehouse.gov that is looking to make it go from 25 years to 15 years to register a foreign built car in the US-

Pretty much has all been said before, but I'll say it again.

Subaru is probably more reliable and much cheaper to maintain.
watch for sludge issues in the 1.8t B5 A4.
Outback =/= STi.
Audi and Subaru AWD systems are both top of the line. At that point, it depends on the driver and the tires.
Audi will be more fun to drive.
If it's the 1.8T, the Audi will get better gas mileage (~30mpg vs suby @ ~25), but the 1.8t requires premium fuel.
Definitely have them both looked at by a trusted mechanic.

if anyone has seen the gillahouse edit they will know that a suby is the way to go. i have a 1991 legacy station wagon that i got for 1500 NZ, it is boss! what are the best subys are the jdm gtb wagons with the twin turbs replaced with a single turbo wrx sti engine (with the red top) my mate had one of these and he raced it up a winding tarmac hill road and against a R32 gtr skyline and won bottom line subaru is the way to go. just look at how many world rally championships that hey have won...

I got an A6 almost a year ago and the thing in a beast in the snow. It really isn't reliable but they're cheaper to buy used than subis. After repairs I'm still only in $6k for mine for a legit ski wagon

I've had both. Used to have an '01 outback limited, now i've got an '03 A6 3.0 wagon and honestly i couldnt be happier with it. Handles equally as well as the subie in the snow (quattro is arguably the best AWD system out there)

I literally just sold my Audi for a Subaru.... had an '04 A4 and sold it and bought a '08 forester. The Audi is obviously very fun, but BEWARE... it is a money sink. Anytime anything simple breaks, you have to buy Audi-specific parts that cost 5 times more than anything else. It literally sucked all the money from my wallet.... I miss my Audi from time to time but the Subaru is more practical and reliable.

this x 1000000000. A 10 year old bmw, mercedes, audi, bentley, etc doesn't look cool to anyone besides other idiotic 17 year old kids. Audi's are more "fun"? Idk where people get this idea from. Both cars are good in their own ways. You can't compare a economy entry level car to a luxury audi, just because both have awd. Maybe they share a couple parts idk. OP do yourself a favor, buy a nice solid reliable car, who needs awd anyways besides like 8 times a year unless you livein coloarado or somethng.

I know a lot of people are saying the subaru is more reliable, but in my experiences it really has been quite the opposite, my brother has a 2009 sti and i have a 2007 s4. The s4 has double the miles and it hasn't had a single problem, where the sti has had to get the short block replaced, among other things. Plus my car was cheaper when i bought it. I usually find that naturally aspirated engines last longer than the turbocharged ones. But this is just one case i know of so can't really compare the two from it.
