The way I see it, Paterno chose the publicity of his football program over the safety of children for the past decade. He allowed Sandusky to be on staff as a known threat to children. As the head coach of the football program, shitty situation or not, it was Paterno's responsibility to deal with this situation. If a coach running around molesting children isn't a "lack of institutional control", I don't know what is; even if that violation is normally relegated to the coach/player realm. What occurred at PSU is disgusting and the only people I have sympathy for in this situation are the non-football player student body who are being swarmed by the media and will miss out on some good football.

Does this excuse him? No. But other officials should have done more, just like Paterno.

I've been trying to figure where I come down on this and honestly icecoast, what were they supposed to do? This is horrible but the football team should be penalized. If local business and people rely on college football for their livelihood maybe they should try something else. What does everyone who doesn't have a division 1 team in their town do? I feel bad but I don't disagree with the penalty. If anyone came forward within a reasonable amount of time, manned up and said something is going on we need to have a look, then none of these sanctions would have come to be. People covered it up, and the team is being penalized. Again If the faculty had some backbone this never would have gone like this, however people chose their precious football over the well being of the student body who they're there to serve. He was 85, and oldschool in a way, he didn't know too much about child abuse and how serious it was. I'm not saying that excuses him. Honestly, I knew sanctions were coming, so did almost everyone, but I personally was expecting 2 year bans and maybe 25 million in fines. That's not too bad, however the penalties they gave were so outrageous considering they have no authority in the legal system (which will do its part, people, like the ones I've named numerous times, will pay.). These penalties may the be the worst in NCAA history.

If the NCAA is going to intervene with legal matters, this should not be an "example" and make this an exception. The NCAA should be fair and intervene with all legal problems then with every team. I don't agree with the penalties, and know that they don't actually have the right to do it, besides the fact that Erickson allowed them too (now the BOT is voting if it was just that Erickson made that call by himself), and now every other team should be held to the same standard. If you break NCAA rules, you get sanctions, AND if you break laws, you get sanctions. Either that or get the sanctions out of legal situations, but now NCAA has to follow through and hold other institutions to the same standard.

Joe Pa made a huge mistake. However, he was a very charitable man, legendary football mind and person. There was a love for him among the community and fans of PSU football that I don't even think can relate to any other college coach ever. There is SO much more good that can be credited to Paterno than this shitty story that unfortunately was true.

im sure drunk assholes have made fools out of themselves at kansas basketball games it just comes with competitive college sports. what i dont understand is mentality that all current penn state students are doing something wrong by attending the university. like why does this event define the entire university as a whole and the entire student body. not a single students moral code or character should be in question simply because they chose to go to school at a university where a scandal took place. while i fully acknowledge that the sandusky scandal is a disgusting, terrible, event that was handled with tremendous irresponsibility and outright negligence i reject your notion that a "normal" person would judge an 18 yr old college freshmen for deciding that penn state is the right school for them and their future.

He donated more than 3 million dollars to the university to build a library, and he refused to be paid more the $200,000 a year while other coaches like Bear Bryant were making 7 figures. And the university knew what they did was wrong, and complied with the NCAA sanctions completely, which is why the team is bowl-eligible again.

except paterno donated almost all his salary back to the university. he had his own scholarship fund for students called the Paterno Fellows which put hundreds of kids through school for free, who otherwise could never have afforded a college education. he paid for one of the libraries on campus to be built (upwards of $10 million) and paid for a church to be built.
he didn't coach for profit and everything he made he put back into the school. to say he was coaching for the profit is anything but misleading and its a shame he got caught up in such a shitty scandal, and put trust in the wrong hands.
penn staters don't think of him as incredible because he won football games. they do because he contributed everything he ever earned back to the university for the sake of the students and to put education first. people support him because of the lives he changed for students outside of football and his dedication to making sure that education was the most important thing.
the reason people outside of penn state don't understand the alumni support for him is because of this. he was a huge part of students lives who attended and it was the title of 'football coach' that is the only thing seen or taken into account by outsiders when anything about Penn State is discussed.
