it's a really tough decision because ultimately the student body and the people who live and work in state college are getting punished for things they didn't do.

like it or not, the football program makes a HUGE amount of money and also keeps a lot of people employed in state college....so this penalizes a large amount of innocent people. Unfortunately in a situation like this, everybody loses because of the horrible actions of a few people. It's not fair to incoming players or even current players to be penalized but at the same time - they can't just do nothing. Something this bad has never happened with a college football program before and for that reason the NCAA has to pull out all the stops and absolutely crush Penn State in fines and penalties in hopes that this never ever ever ever is allowed to take place anywhere else.

at the end of the day, as much as the penalties suck - you have to think about the kids whose lives were seriously fucked up if not ruined forever because nobody would speak up and do the right thing. there is no recourse for them. they can't just "transfer without penalty" like the current players can, those are real people who were subjected to disgusting shit that they couldn't even control.

BUT,

This wasnt something that involved FOOTBALL. They werent paying kids to come to school there, they werent doping their kids up on steroids, it wasnt a football issue.

The football players and students werent involved so there is no reason that they should be the ones punished. Sandusky is going to jail forever, JoePa is dead...Send the rest of the parties to jail and the case is closed. This is what the legal system is for, sending criminals to jail. It is just absurd to me that the entire school and football program from 1998 until now is getting screwed for something 5 or so people did.

It's absurd to me that you don't believe this scandle has anything to do with Penn States Football program?  It had everything to do with Football.. The reason Penn State's currently in this situation is because Joe Paterno was trying cover up Sandusky's child rape problem and to "protect" the football program from a scandle back in the 90's.  How do you people not think this is a football scandle.  Have you not been reading the news or listening?  There should have been the death penilty for a year and then afterwards the hit with the sanctions.

People in support of Joe Paterno really make me sick.

ppl crying about the innocent people being affected are just too dumb to realize that the same shit effectively would have happened in 98 if the scandal had come to light... yes the penn state community is being punished, but at least they got their sentence delayed by 15 years.

Joe Paterno is only being shit on now because he tried to cover it up, as well as the whole organization. But if they outed Sandusky, yes the NCAA would have punished them but nothing like this.

Ignorant fools. Very powerful members of the school made a decision to ignore the horrendous things that Sandusky was doing in order to save their football program and all of the money that it makes for them and the school. FUCK THAT SHIT

The NCAA isn't punishing the players, students, employees & the surrounding businesses. Your boy JoePa, Sandusky & the rest of the PSU staff that ignored the problem brought this shit on and are the ones punishing all of the innocent individuals. Do you really think this could go unpunished? The school isn't even upset by the decision because they are well aware that it could have been a lot worse.

You're all so delusional. Think of how you'd feel if you were one of the boys raped by Sandusky.

I benefited from children being raped? Do explain. First of all if it had been reported when it should have, Penn State would have taken a little heat, but people would realize these people turned in Sandusky, thus being more heroes then villains, and the community would have received the same amount of benefits. Because they made a bad decision things took the same course, but everything is getting shit on now. So no, I did not benefit from children being raped or the cover up, it would have been the same regardless, yet now in the situation we are in, we are being destroyed.

so what you're saying is that if you wait long enough, things should be forgotten? They should have faced the music back in the 90s, that way things would have gotten shitty, but then they could have recovered quickly and been on their way.

I think it's a good punishment. I don't give a shit at all about college football though.

The simple fact is that the program should not be allowed to have benefited from this cover up at all in any way.

No I never said that, I said that the cover up really didn't benefit the public in any way, even though people think it does, which really doesn't make sense. It isn't about the saturday afternoon football games, its about the money it generates for the university and community by sunday monring.

from what i gather...

coverup meant an untainted record for the football team.

That means that people kept coming to the football games, and putting money into it.

That money then went into the school, which in effect, went into the community.


That's what people see it as. Had they been ousted right at the start and punished, a lot of that money would not have ever existed, and wouldn't have made it's way through to others.

So now everyone pays the price for the money that was a result of the coverup. Simple as that.

For the last time, the program had already become a powerhouse and was already generating this kind of money before this even happened. Heres the two situations.

Sandusky rapes->report it->sandusky arrested->people pissed at PSU, but realize they turned him in and did the right then, maybe reputation slightly tainted, but 110,000 people still are going to show up, and TV and bowls will still want PSU-> situation and scandal avoided today.

or what really happened

Sandusky rapes->not reported->No arrest->no slight bump in the road, but economy and reputation about the same as in situation 1->scandal breaks->PSU and community thrown under the bus

It isn't like because this was covered up, PSU became a powerhouse and generated a ton of money, had they gotten Sandusky put away the reputation of PSU would not have been stained, and the "scandal" could have been avoided.

no, but they still generated money as a result. And you cannot say that things would have been the same regardless of when this broke out, just as I cannot say they would have been different. We simply don't know.

But you can't expect to just keep on rolling despite a scandal like this.

The fact is, penn state screwed up big time. And now they're paying the price. Every aspect of the school is, because one way or another, they all benefited from it.

If it was reported correctly and taken care of in 2001, it would not have been a scandal, it would have been a university, reporting a pedophile (doing the right thing). And Penn State screwed up big time... uh cough....There are 40,000 people that live here and are assosicated with the university, I recall four KNOWN men covering it up, not to mention Tom Corbett and members of the board of trustees could have potentially been involved, I don't think that means the entire university.

Penn State did not benefit from covering this up. The fall-out from this scandal caused way more damage on its own than if they'd just turned in Sandusky immediately. Any ill-gotten benefit from covering up the rape will already be erased by the fact that it has been revealed. Additional correction from the NCAA is not necessary.

I'm saying you lied about having a chance to go to Penn State. PSU is a much better school than Kansas. If finances and admission weren't issues, nobody would ever choose to go to Kansas over Penn State. KU's extremely high acceptance rate provides an explanation for why you would go to Kansas: it's the only school that let you in.

hey, you know what my old school has no history of?! Covering up pedophiles. Face it, right or wrong, mentioning penn state now immediately brings up thoughts on this scandal.

I guess I should add this to remove any claims of bias:

I didn't apply to either Kansas or Penn State. In fact, I attend somewhat of a rival school to Penn State: Michigan. I have no reason to prop up PSU over KU other than the fact that PSU is legitimately a better school.

I do not go the University and am not a student that came to get drunk and go to football games. I am someone that has lived in State College for 12 years, and only been working for them for two. I wouldn't count myself as the average "penn state person", I would consider myself someone who actually pays attention and reads things such as the freeh report instead of reading the headlines that ESPN shows you and most other people, because that is about all you have read or looked into. I know a lot more about this situation then anyone here and never supported everything from this situation. Read everything else I have posted. I defend the innocent victims of this scandal and blame and don't have respect for the people responsible. Which I might add, isn't quite clear yet since the freeh report is basically a bunch of interviews and assumptions. I support the university, not the men responsible. Understand what I support and hate before you say something like that. I never supported pedophiles and shouldn't be considered a pedophile supporter because I simply live in a town which contains a university that was caught up in these mens terrible actions.

haha you're so mad and I honestly don't get it, did I hurt your feelings somwhere else on this site? Yes I got accepted to PSU which isn't exactly an elite school either, I'wanted to go to KU my whole life for a few reasons; family taught there, parents graduated from there, friends go there, but the main reason was the basketball team. Also, just so you know unless you;re going into a specialized field the school you went to doesn't really matter so long as you have the piece of paper that says you were able to show up for 4 years (unless its Ivy league)
