Burlington

I'm going on a college visit to Burliington this weekend and was just wondering 2 things. 1: What are some cool places/shops to visit in the town. 2: Are there any mountains nearby that are open? I know about Killington but I've done some research and it appears to be pretty far from Burlington. Any responses would be nice, Thanks.

For the mountains part there are not very many open around Burlington.....Killington would probably be your best bet.

Skirack, previous SIA Shop of the Year, is in town. Check them out for sure.

And once the snow stays put, you've got about 5 mountains within an hour's drive: Bolton Valley, Stowe, Smuggler's Notch, Sugarbush, Mad River Glen, and Jay Peak (bit longer of a drive).

-Just walk around on Church Street, ton's of restaurants.

Killington is the only mountain open so far. It'll be another week for Sugarbush, not sure on any of the others.

Burlington is an awesome college town. If you get a chance the Farmhouse restaurant has tasty burgers.

I live in plattsburgh across the lake, hit up ski rack, the alpine shop and OGE....if you have means of transportation then head over to pburgh and check out maui north.

for mtns.... your only a hop step away from bolton valley and smugglers notch... but around that area there are a few or more.... Jay is where it is at though pow, trees and just good skiing.

For skiing this upcoming weekend, K is your only option. The only other mountain in the east that has been truly open is Sunday River in Maine.

Burlington is awesome, im here at champlain. Definitely walk down church street and head to the waterfront if its nice out. which school you visiting?

Also, Killington is only like...an hour and forty minutes or so if you do it right. It's worth the drive.

sooo true. and al's is fucking awesome. also, try to get a reservation at A Single Pebble, as long as you have parents to foot the bill. probably the best chinese food you will ever have. this is not my biased opinion, there is legitimately consensus among people who have been there.

as far as shops go: if you have ever been on a longboard, you should check out Ridin' High at the corner of Battery and Pearl street. Maven is kinda cool, but overall a pretty generic street wear/skate shop. and definitely hit up the Ski Rack. it's waaayyy overpriced, but i've been in there all the time recently just getting stoked for the season. and don't be afraid to chat with some kids, ask them questions, etc. you'll learn a lot more from us than you will from your tour guide, and most of us are perfectly happy to share our thoughts/experiences with our respective schools.

How can things be over-priced if they are below MSRP (at MAP)and all UVM FST and Ski Club members get a year-round discount on anything in the store?

I mean it's not over priced, but putting some fake price crossed out with the real msrp labeled at "ON SALE" is a shameless marketing technique.

well since a lot of shops (almost every mountain based shop) actually sell at full MSRP, they can say they are on sale. Most city shops are at MAP and as such, technically they are on sale.

I have not been in the store recently to see if they are using that crossing out the MSRP tactic.

BUT since they are at MAP, I think it's a mistake to say they are over-priced or waaay over-priced- they are at the normal discount of MAP. None of their prices are inflated.

wow, i guess i should have phrased that more carefully. i have found from my personal experience that the ski rack has had the tendency to be more expensive than other places where i have bought by equipment and had it serviced (mostly in NH). i guess that technically does not make them "over-priced", however i was simply trying to communicate that i would not go there if i were looking for a deal. i did not mean that their prices are "over-" the MSRP, but rather that they are "over-" those that i have found in the other stores that i frequent. again, more related to services than actual goods.

It's longer than that with all the roads closed still. I believe the fastest way to Killington now is to take route 7 down to Rutland and then cut over to route 4. 89 to 107 or whatever it is is now out of the question because 107 is still closed from the flooding.

Take 89 south to Waterbury, come down on 100S and it only takes like....an hour and 40 minutes. I love in Rochester and make this drive all the time. It's just a little bumpy.

Im visiting UVM Champlain and St. Michaels. I'm planning on going to champlain after going to stuff about it in my hometown. I'm pretty excited though cause Burlington sounds awesome

I just made a list of all these places, I have scheduled tours at UVM and Champlain and know a few kids who go there and will probably ask lots of questions. St. Michaels I dont know anything about and I think Im just gonna check out the campus.

I <3 Burlington and just about everything in it. Very interesting people for sure. Church street is great to chill around all day, good food and all. Ski Rack is where its at too. I believe Stowe is the closest to burlington but im not sure, plus they aint open yet

I'm a freshmen at Champlain College here in Burlington, VT. I must say I love it so far even though the ski/ snowboard season hasn't even kicked in yet. Going down to the water is always a lot of fun to do, plus once and a while I visit the Ski Rack just to see any new merchandise or just to hang out. I got a pass for $30 for Sugarbush's Mt Ellen. So I'm planning on riding there like every weekend. I know Champlain has buses running back and forth from Sugarbush to Champlain's campus so that's what I will be using for transportation.

Take tours with a grain of salt. If you know someone who goes to the school, have them give you a tour. Although anyone who has been on two tours definitely knows this.
