Lookin at getting a Canon 7D

Alright before the M&A rains down their shitstorm of why i should not get a 7d, i will probably be using it for 70% video and 30% pictures, i know all of their limitations, i have used one before, i know all of the hidden costs and how expensive it will be. What i really want to find out is a good lens to get with it. I know the kit lens isn't the best and i want to get something thats good for both video and photography. i just wanna hear everyone's opinions on lenses that they have or have used.

You're probably going to hear it from somebody eventually so I might as well say it now, the Tamron 17-50mm.

I don't have it personally, but it was recommended it to me and I plan on asking for it for Christmas. It covers a good zoom range and is said to be much sharper, more colorful, and overall better than the kit lens.

if your willing to dish out a few more bucks then the tamron 17-50, then get the canon 17-40L but if you want more then one lens and need something fairly cheap, you cant beat the tamron 17-50, tokina 11-16 and canon 70-200. all great lenses to have with you on a shoot.

honestly the 17-40 is inferior to the 17-50, unless you plan on getting a full frame in the future.

Id say get a 17-50, then as your next purchase get an 11-16 or 70-200

Moving on from the world of crops, gotta find myself a new lens combo too

awesome thanks for the insight +k for all. i am planning on putting some money into some nice glass tho so i was looking at some of the L series from canon. ive heard lots of good about all those lenses tho so ill be sure to check them out

i dont see why you would get a 7d over a 60d with that video/photo ratio. Same exact video quality, flip out screen, cheaper, and chances are you wouldn't get the most out of the 7d's photo capabilities anyway so the 60d would be more then enough. That would leave a few extra hundred bucks left over for glass/tripod/glidecam/etc

Not to mention the 7d has (by many people's standards) unacceptable noise at low ISO's, and often has sharpness issues. I would never advise anyone to get a 7d personally.

For video (or mostly), a 60D is the way to go.

Personally I'm not seeing why the OP should get a 7D if he doesn't even know what lenses are worth getting. But hey.


Canon 85mm f/1.8, best bang for the buck out there. Really love this FL on APS-C

such a great camera. If I wasn't into landscape photography, I would probably pick a 60d over a 5d even if they were the same price

I can't speak for anyone else but it's hand down one of my favorite cameras.  For photo and video.  It has it's pitfalls, but every camera does.  If you shoot it right you can limit the issues.  Using correct "Looks" and picture profiles helps alot too.  That is one thing about 90% of people with Canon's never ever tap into.

Well, the 7D's AF system is super nice so...

I shot with a 60D today (for the first time, check my topic!) and I gotta say it's a really nice camera. Whilst in the beginning I was a bit skeptic towards the swivelscreen at the end of the day I loved it! I just loathe the buttons. All of them. The ones on the back, the twisting/ok/menu dial is pretty much impossible to use and the buttons on top are also really flimsy.

This is an area where the 7D excels.  The 5D, t2i, t3i and 60D's button layouts were somewhat obnoxious to me.  On the 7D...everything just made sense.

you shouldn't rely on AF, people got by for decades without it, and nailing the focus manually is far more rewarding

Sure. At apertures where you have very little depth of field, AF is awesome. It is not be what people used decades ago, but it is not fun to come home and realize that you photos are just a touch out of focus. I spent this weekend shooting with a manual focus 55mm 2.0 prime, and it sucks to manual focus that thing when it is wide open.

A rebel's focus screen is terrible, that's why you were having issues. I have no problems focusing at 1.4-2

with AF, you always have to worry about your lens back or forward focusing, not tracking well in low light, an so on, which happens far more often then it should. Unless you are shooting very high speed subject(birds/cars), i don't see a need for af.

is AF nice to have? Sure, but is it something most people should be overly concerned with when purchasing a camera? Nope. I went from a 45 point AF system to a 9 point, and it wasn't a big deal at all.

anyway, back on topic, I still stand by my get a 60d comment

I am considering getting the more matte coated screen with the grid on it for my 5d... do you think that'd be worth it?

The only pro for 7d as a video cam is that they have HDMI out for monitors, and you can PL mount mod them, which I'm pretty sure hot rod doesn't do with lower end cameras.

Get a 60d or T2i and save yourself a few bucks. I think both have many advantages over the 7d for video. Or if you're patient, wait and see what canon decides to release in the first quarter of 2012... possibly a 7d mk2 or 5d mk3 (that means decline in 5dII price!).

The tamron 17-50 is a great lens for crop sensors. I'm personally switching over to primes for the personal focal lengths.

thanks for all the input everyone, im not going to be getting it tonight or anything so i still have some time to think about all im gonna want with it and such, but the 60d does seem like a reasonable option, ive just already used a 7d before

7d and 60d basically have the same ergonomics, except for the 7d has the little joystick. worth $300 more? no.

I have an ee-s in mine, manual focus at really wide apertures is incredibly easy. Only downside is it is a bit dark with lenses smaller then 2.8. If I know I am only shooting my 17-40 or 70-200 i will throw in the stock screen, but the rest of the time the ee-s stays in, and it's not really an issue unless you are in a very dark area(indoors with very little light or at night) with slower glass.

just wanted to bump this thread because i didn't really wanna make a new one on the same topic. so couple things...  my photo/video ratio will probably 50/50 now or 45/55 so does this change anyone's opinion on if i should still get the 60d over the 7d?

 the two main reasons i would get a 60d would be for Magic Lantern and the articulating screen would just be a plus. i really like the 7d so much cuz i feel like the ergonomics are slighlty better (like the buttons) and i like the 8fps burst vs the 5 even tho thats not a huge deal and for some reasons ive always liked working with cf cards over sd cards but is this enough to justify the extra money in others' opinions?

or should i try and wait til mid april to see what canon's new release is?

60d gets you more bang for the buck, but I really detest the button layouts of the t2i/t3i/60d. They also feel plasticky compared to the 7d.

And really, if you're shooting crop sensor go with the 17-50. The 17-40L is the most overrated lens I've ever used.

To tell you the truth, I really really find the flip out screen useful. Some people think its not that big of a deal, but it actually makes shooting video a lot easier. Magic lantern is an awesome tool, I love it. Knowing the 7D doesn't have it, I would go with the 60D because of the ML and swivel screen. Both really nice tools to have.

and out of all of this "good advice" not one person mentions the difference in build (besides landis)?? i would assume that because youre on thie website, that you ski. i can also make the assumption that you plan on using said camera to film skiing. Over the past few years of owning my 7d ive had numerous accidents while glide-caming at high rates of speed, ive been sprayed, ive shot urban in the middle of a snowstorm, fuck in the middle of a rainstorm. Ive also spent $300 to replace my cpu for water damage after seemingly no water/snow was near my camera and it stopped working in the middle of a shoot. the 7d has an alloy body and it water/dust sealed. the 60d has none of the above.

seems like a no brainer to me.

people under rate how much abuse a 60D or t3i can actually take. I remember when I first got my t3i, I was worried about the same thing. I have shot when its raining, and snowing, and on a beach and it has been fine. Now dont go jump in a pool with it, but there is for sure a bit of weather sealing to a certain extent.

IMO, i think people over-hype how much either can take. but if you put them head to head, i guarantee you that the 7d is hands down better built, and does have a fully sealed body (note: this is only true if you are using canon L glass), yet i still had to replace my cpu for water damage.

although to be fair paul, i've had all of the above happen to my T2i as well and it still runs as well as the first day i got it. there's no doubt that the 7D is a much stronger camera, but i'm very glad i didn't shell out the extra cash for a 7D (if i did more photography things would be different).

i realize it is better built. Im just saying people shouldn't be worrying about quality issues with the 60D and other lower end EOS cameras. All im saying is that shooting in snow with a t3i wont do you harm. Im not recommending shooting in a blizzard or anything, but I have not had any problems at all shooting in rain, snow, and hail with mine.

I'd have a hard time giving you a very accurate ratio, but i'll put it this way: The only time I do photography is when I go to foreign countries. and even then, it's like 20% photography, 80% video. if i were doing photography at home and in every day life, i would have bought a 7D (the 60D wasn't available back then, probably what i would buy now instead of a 7D).

gotchya, cuz ill still be doing mostly video but ill probably get a lot more into photography as well thats why i was curious. ill get to use both this weekend cuz i have a friend who just got his 7D a couple months ago and a friend who got a 60D like two weeks ago

frankly i think that if you have an interest in video, DON'T go with a 7D. out of the entire canon line (aside from like the t1i, t2, and t3), the 7D is probably the last one i would pick for video. 60D is much better in that regard.
