i'm gonna say that any hockey girdle will offer a lot more all around protection than any impact short in the market.
you'd be fine to go with just about any company and can get a cheap pair to a pair that will last forever if you just use them for skiing. but if you're looking for something that is more lightweight i would check out some Mission stuff. they're more into the roller hockey business than ice. most of their pants and girdles should be a little lighter and not as bulky as say Bauer or CCM.
But if you're going for quality and protection, look into Bauer. Reebok seems to have some pretty good stuff as well, but i haven't dealt with much of their lower end equipment. but if you can score a decent pair for $20 you'd be set.
the roller hockey girdles wont have the really high hip (pretty much covering your obliques) and lower back extenions like normal ice hockey breezers have.
here's some links to some sites if you wanna check em out to get an idea...
how much do the underarmor football shorts or hockey pads restrict? have been thinking about these but they feel weird. anyone actually used them?
I've spent a season in impact shorts, because I've had some issues with my tail bone, and I still wear them on and off. Mine were from the Crash Pads brand, and you definitely get used to wearing them. They're a little weird at first, but after a few days in them you won't even notice you have them on. The only problem is that you get considerably more sweaty with them on.
Not too sure if they are exactly like hockey shorts, as it has been years since I played and I no longer have my shorts to compare the crash pads to. I assume they are pretty close though.
