What new vehicle should I purchase?

My SUV's had problem after problem after it passed 100k miles. I just got off the phone with a mechanic and the transmissions gone. Fuck it. I'm looking for a new car.

What can I get that's under 15k that gets relatively good mileage, reliable, and I won't look like a goob? Ideas?

meh, i drive a truck, gonna lift er in the spring, you say youre a car guy so what do you drive? my truck stock in '72 probably put out more horses than whatever rice burner you rally around in.

also, my dad drives a lifted diesel thats showroom clean with some chrome, and hes a badass.

as far as compensating for anything, my dads a badass and i drive around in a rusty old pickup with a babe next to me all the time, what is there to compensate for?

Gas is worse than diesel.

And the soot is a by product of burning diesel fuel. It does not contribute to global warming. It does contribute to air pollution though.

In all honestly I got a 03 wrx last year-not casue I want blowies from every NS but becasue it was a smart decision.

For under 9,000$ i got a car with under 70k on it, 5 speed on the floor,  wagon to store all my goods, AWD, enough power for me, MPG isnt great around low 20's, enough room for peope to sit in the back nicely, not nearly as expensive to fix like most cars people are sugusting to you....in my opinion theres no better choice

CO2 emissions from a gallon of gasoline = 2,421 grams x 0.99 x (44/12) = 8,788 grams = 8.8 kg/gallon = 19.4 pounds/gallon

CO2 emissions from a gallon of diesel = 2,778 grams x 0.99 x (44/12) = 10,084 grams = 10.1 kg/gallon = 22.2 pounds/gallon

But, comparing more relevant values - CO2 emissions based on energy released in combustion: diesel: 73.25 g/MJ
gasoline: 73.38 g/MJ


diesel is also easier to refine; thus taking less energy to produce in its refined form, and is able to be processed faster


comparing that with improvement in economy that diesel offers, it's generally less CO2 emissions.

NOx emissions are still relatively high for Diesel; but, I suspect that to come down a crap ton as diesels become more common and catalysts are tailored for diesel vehicles, specifically.



Urea catalysts brings Diesel NOx levels down to that of gasoline. The urea catalysis system, as it relates to NOx abatement, degrades much slower than that of standard gasoline catalytic systems.

dont buy a wrx op....they are all pretty high mileage with really good resale value. Generally most people who drive them drive the shit out of them and they arent really that reliable. $9000 with 70k on it isnt that great.


OP if i was about to drop 15,000 on a car....id go with a jeep grand cherokee. Really practical good in bad weather and can find a newer one with pretty low mileage on it.

you are correct about the relative c02 from production based as diesel is a mixture of less refined fuel. The main concern with diesel until i believe the clean diesel laws in 2008 were passed was nox emissions due to the major contribution to acid rain. I would say acid rain is more potenially harmful for environment than c02 and it goes to show why the laws on diesel emissions were passed.

You are right though particle filter and exhaust fluid diesel have brought diesel emissions to the same level to that of gasoline engines.

The only problem with clean diesels with a particle filter is they are fucking incredibly expensive to service the emissions systems. On the new tdi clean diesel a particle filter replacement that is not covered under warranty is in the 6k-9k range for labor and parts.

My buddy had like an 05' grand cherokee, we took it to the mountain like every weekend, and like every other weekend it broke down. Jeep (chrysler) has pretty poor make for lasting long. I drive an 89' Toyota pickup (early tacoma make) and It rides like a boss, it looks older then shit, but its got like 96,000 on it! seeing as subaru and toyota are pretty much the same company Im saving up to buy a sub just mainly the fact the last longer then a fat bitch being single, All I can say is if you want some bang for your buck. Japanese know how to make long lasting whips.

this if you can find a good one. or look at tahoe/yukons, they can go through anything and are really reliable/easy to maintain. My tahoe has 230,000 on it, only regular maintnence so far

There is absolutly no way that driving a truck like that is better than driving a gas engine for the environment. Maybe it could be better im not exactly sure but a stock diesel maybe. A lifted, jacked up diesel pickup with huge pipes like that is going to be awful for the environment

The 2012 Honda Accord gets 34 mpg highway, has a 271 hp V6, cost less than $30k, and is as fast as the Audi A4 in it's fastest package (you just don't have to $45k on a fucking sedan).

I know you said new car for $15k, but there aren't too many options in that range without going Jetta (ugh) or Ford Fiesta shopping.

Aerodynamics play an enormous part in fuel economy. And a larger piece of weight certainly requires more power, and therefore fuel, to move it.

dude obviously lifting a truck is gonna harm its fuel economy. It's not even the aerodynamics its the fact that you are putting on bigger wheels. probably changing the gear ratios and all that stuff. Puttings stacks on or basically anything to increase power is gonna harm your fuel economy.

The other kid was totally right. A small gas car is obviously better for the environment than a big diesel truck. However a small diesel car is better than a small gas car. Same as a diesel 1 ton is gonna be the same or better than a gas 1 ton.

diesel gas prices are usually lower than gas

and diesel engines have a higher compression ratio which means they get better fuel economy overall.

funfact:

black (diesel) smoke is better for the enviorment then normal gasoline engine emmisions. the black stuff is too heavy to stay in the air and settles to the ground.

im not saying everyone with a big truck or fast car is compensating, shit i like both big trucks and fast cars, ive owned fast cars, and could use a big truck.
i can even understand the guys lifting a truck to a certain extent, a lift and big tires can be usefull, a lot of people might need that. its not to show off or anything.
im talking about the people who lift their trucks, and chrome them out, make them as loud as possible, etc.. just to get peoples attention, they want people to look at them and think "wow that guys a badass".

the first guy bought or modded his truck/car thinking about what HE wants, what will be useful for him, and what he needs, the second guy buys/mods his truck/car with the purpose of getting peoples attention, because he wants people to see him, think hes cool, he needs that approval, (usually has the opposite effect) because either he is weak minded and isnt happy with himself how he is, and/or he is compensating...
theres a big difference, between the two, its not always black and white, but its usually pretty easy to tell

im just saying the guys in retardedly lifted chromed out trucks with like 22 inch chrome wheels, "rollin coal" every chance they get, spend an hour every day gettin their tan on, wear shades 24/7, flat bill hat, cover their truck in tapout stickers, type people are compensating. that may sound specific, an easier way to describe them is a complete tool or douchebag, but there are a shit ton of those kinds of people around here and i 100% cannot say that ive seen one person driving something like that, that didnt look/act like a complete douche, and i see many of them daly.
same goes for sports cars, you see someone in a murdered out 300c or something, on 21's bumping his stereo, he probably fits into that catagory. where a guy in a stock or tastefully, not "look at me, i need attention, my cars flashy as fuck" modded sports car. is most likely a decent guy.
