because depending on the model, 10-20 year old audi's and bmw's can be reliable as fuck, some models can be an unreliable piece of shit. if you know what you're looking at and do some research, older audi's and bmws can be some of the smartest buys for a car. my 23 year old bmw has almost 240,000 miles, i drive the shit out of it, constantly rev it to and above redline, i offroad it and jump it, done 2 track days on all stock suspension/brakes, and over almost 4 years now ive spent like 1500 on maintenance, most of it is a result of me beating the shit out of it.
ive got a good amount of experience with audis too, my grandpa had an old audi 90 that he put like 300,000 miles on, still running strong when he sold it. and it was basically problem free. ive also had a little experience with a b5 s4 and that thing was a complete piece of shit when it came to reliability. so are most the other b5 s4's ive seen. they drive great and look awesome, just suck for reliability.
you really just gotta make sure you know what your getting, same goes for subaru's too, plus an audi will destroy just about any subaru in snow. get a 325ix and it will also destroy pretty much any subaru.
