Get some old skis, and just practice with different mounting jigs.

i imagine a shop would be willing to teach you if you paid them, gave them beer, and they would let you shadow the tech in the shop

This.... you can have people tell you how to do it and watch 100 videos. But until you actually do it a few times it wont really "click."

When I went through my technician training this is exactly what we did. Practice mounting various types of bindings on various width/size skis.

Yup. We practiced drilling on shitty skis never to be used again, did a few practice mounts and then mounted literally hundreds of pairs of rental skis. After all that it's pretty much second nature.

Should they fail their sacred vow, a Shopmaster council will kidnap the offender in the night, give him an unfair trial, and leave him in the back of Wal-Mart with his hands stuck in FKS heelpieces, to perish in eternal suffering.

This is why you should go to a shop to get your skis mounted.

Look around on TGR, there is quite a bit of information. I have a set of skis that I mounted myself with a cardboard jig. Those skis are some 155 atomics mounted with 30 year old bindings and i use them as rockskis. Don't mount your own skis if you couldn't throw them away.

Pretty sure theres a 4frnt techtalk episode about how to mount them at home. but. much less accurate than using the proper tools and learning hands on from a shopmaster. definitely wouldnt recommend doing it first try on your new skis.

Mounting bindings does not require a degree in engineering. All you need to know how to do is a little bit of measuring and how to use a drill. Go to TGR and search the paper templates thread. You can even practice on a 2x4 if you don't have old skis. I do recommend practicing a few times before you drill into a fresh set of skis. But it's not Impossible to do yourself. I hate the shop dorks who say it is.

I dont think anyone said it was impossible. Just advising him that practice is extremely helpful.

I agree, definitely don't need to be an engineer, but without all the proper tools... it takes a fair amount of thought to make sure you do everything perfectly.

There is a video in one of the sticky'd threads up top. Basically, if you fuck up it's your own fault and don't expect to get any refund or replacement out of it.

And to what Ginko said, what about those of us who are confident and smart enough to mount our own skis? I don't like getting shafted in the ass paying for some easy ask task (easier for them) that takes the tech 20 minutes, but for some reason I can't have my skis for 2 weeks, and then worrying the whole time that my skis will be mounted wrong because the tech has the mental capacity of a stubborn 60 year old who thinks that everything should be done one way.

You can go paper, but it sucks without a drill press. You arent paying for the 20 minutes it takes to do the mount, you're paying for the knowledge and experience to make sure the mount is done correctly and that you dont have shitty stripped out holes and dangerously mounted bindings. Theres a certification process for shop techs for a reason, seriously.

Screw jigs.  Go free hand.  I always like mounting skis myself.  I took my skis into a shop one day because and edge was coming out and they were impressed with my freehand mount.  Just practice and it isn't too hard once you get the hang of it

theres lots of good info and paper jigs on wildsnow.com and in the tgr forums.
Otherwise freehand is fun if you practice on shitty skis first

Yeah I am on the East Coast haha.  But it was only because I did them free hand.  Really isn't the easiest thing to go them perfectly centered

take some time to prepare, make a plexi jig, and a drill stopper, then practice mount first on a 2x4 or an old ski, then step it up to the real deal !

theres a video tutorial in the stickied binding adjusment thread, first page ....

i did my first mount a couple of months ago and worked out perfect, would definitely do that more in the future :)

ps: me/NS is not liable for this video, nor is the guy who uploaded it, if you fuck up your skis or yourself its your own fault....
