Surface one life vs Surface New Life

I live in AK and will mainly be skiing pow, groomers and crud with one of these. Whoever has one of these skis please fill me in on the pros and cons, especially people who have ski'd on both.

I would highly reccomend the one life because these skis will be able to also ski groomers and be overall more versatile bcause they are much smaller with width wise!

i spend most of my days on one of two pairs of skis. ace of spades for park, and new lifes for pow/anything else.

Don't let the extra width fool you, these skis charge hard. they're plenty stiff and with a little less rocker than the one life they'll be less prone to wheelie out from under you. that being said, they're also going to have more float which is nice. any day i'm NOT going to be lapping the park is spent on the new lifes, thats how much i love them. even if new snowfall is minimal, they can certainly rip up groomers like it's their job.

if it's going to be a pow ski, do it right. grab a pair of new lifes, mount them up center, and go jib the shit out of some pillow lines.

One Life is a lot better in versatile conditions where New Life is a straight up powpow destroyer. Plus, i seem to remember that the New Life was a symmetrical ski whereas the One life was not

you got the symmetrical thing.

only thing i would change, is that having skied both, i think the new life is more versatile. the rocker on the one life makes them wheelie monsters while theres still some fore and aft support on the new life. that lets them charge wayyyy harder

i felt like the one life was kind of an awesome, unique, niche park ski. not something i would ever take into the backcountry, not something i would want to drop a cliff on. plus the new lifes tear up hard pack surprisingly well so i think it's a no brainer.

just curious but why are you saying the one life seems like more of a park ski? from everything i understand (which obviously is only what ive read) is that the one lifes extreme triple rocker would lend itself more to the pow then hardpack, and because the ski is asymmetrical, this would make parkriding a hell of a lot harder... not to mention the soft bases. care to explain your logic?

i had more fun on them on hardpack than i did in the soft stuff or tech lines.

It does better than any park ski in the pow because it's wider and has heaps of rocker, but at the same time, it's awfully weak in the tip and tail considering you're basically on a platform the size of a snowblade. I'm assuming that if he is skiing alaska he's going to be skiing some pretty rad terrain with the possibility of a treck into the BC, and trust me, the one lifes would suck ass for that. there is a reason the pow ski, the new lifes have half the rocker of the one's, you can charge harder and still have a functional ski if you ever need to do some skinning.

all i'm saying is this...

skiing outside the park, any conditions = newlife

skiing inside and outside the park, anything but blower days = one life

One Lifes are an amazing daily driver ski, that you'd never ever have to worry about having problems in the deep snow.

I skied a pair for 2 seasons, and I absolutely loved them.
They charge hard, and I found them incredibly versatile for just about everything.

The rocker can make you wheelie, but if you know how to ski forward, you're not going to have a problem, unless you want to wheelie, which is incredibly fun.

The ski is stiff, so it makes charging steeps and anything else extremely easy, no chatter from the tips either.

The rocker makes them float like a dream, amazing slashes, amazing cliff landings, pretty much the ultimate do it all ski for a big mountain.

The New Life is going to replace my One Lifes this season.

It's a fat, symmetrical, (and longer) powder charging ski.
I haven't skied it quite yet, so I can't give you a review, but from what has been said here, it makes me stoked to have them as my big mountain/powder ski this winter. (Double Times will be my park/all mountain)

I also have both pairs and new life is more versatile.

The flat camber of the one life makes them get sketchy at speed on the harder stuff. But they make you feel boss in soft.

The new life is huge and center but it crushes and hold a mean edge. If I had to ski an icy park day I would snag these to be honest.

well you couldnt be more wrong about the one lifes. I spent all last season on them and they absolutely rip when conditions get soft. Yeah they are a little squirley when your cruising on hard pack due to the short running length but that all goes away in the pow. Once you get them in anything over a couple inches they just rip. Short turns, long turns, cliffs, trees, straightlines, they literally do everything well in soft snow. hands down one of the most playful charging skis ive ever been on. And honestly i think these make cliffs easier. You can be off balance or too far forward and as long as you get the skis under you you'll recover because there is no chance of the ski diving at all and the stiff flex will have you blasting through anything in the landing. They rock.

if you learn how to ski properly they most likely won't "wheelie". i gloves my one lifes as a one ski quiver in the pacific northwest which can be similar to some places in ak i believe. I was able to handle very steep technical lines and drop any cliff. they also were great in the park and hardback. the "freak" rocker gives you lots of confidence because no matter how deep the landing or snow is you can trust your skis to pop back up and float as u ski off. i also am pretty light which means i don't need as fat of a ski to keep me up. Only complaint with the one lives is that they will fall apart slowly throughout the season. Any rock you hit will most likely core shot or rip of an edge. This season i am getting the ghost chants so i have the same rocker profile but stronger bases and a little bit more underfoot. Either ski in my opinion would be great for ak though

Yea, Surface based are pretty weak, I took a nasty core shot in my One Lifes, but that's because I'm an idiot. You're only going to wheelie if you don't know how to stay balanced on your skis. Or if you want to wheelie, which is incredibly fun when straight lining

I ride both in AK and Mt. Baker. My take:

For tight trees and pillow lines, One Lifes are choice. Super bouncy!

New Lifes lend themselves to charging lines better, with a little less bounce but just as much float.
