New News system

You will notice that we drastically overhauled the news system on the site.

Please post any feedback you have on it in this thread!

There were two major goals with this:

1) Make it easier to find and view news on the site.

2) Start to post massive quantities of more news.

The format of news will be changing as well. We'll still do the same things as we did before (larger more in-depth coverage of stuff) but also we're going to be adding slim, tight and small tidbits from the wide world of the internet of skiing. We want to do our best to bring everything to your newschoolers experience so you don't have to go hunting for it.

You'll also notice the remote links in there. This is an experimental new feature where we sometimes see things on another site which are just too good in their original format to mess with. You can go to the site and check out their content, but still be connected to newschoolers and use our commenting system (which hides in a tab at the bottom of the screen).

In addition, we'll be using the system to link to good content all over the site. There is some serious gems all over the place that get looked over because they're buried in one of the systems.

No. I manually bumped that ski time article today because I thought it was interesting. :)

We're experimenting with the new system. That doesn't stop you from getting lost in the old system and seeing some cool legacy stuff.

i noticed that when i hover over the News tab, Issue 2 gets pushed into the ad below. Not high on the "Fix NS" list and i didn't think it was thread worthy so i thought i'd post it here.

Might just be some articles, but this new news system doesn't like working with mobile.

All I get is a blank news page with the topic, no article itself.

Any insight?

Well, there has been a few, but one I can tell you is the Simon Dumont one.

Maybe it's just since it's an ESPN article?

Yeah good point. These are the remote articles, which we don't have an artful way to display on mobile. They work on the iPad but not the smaller screens.

We'll get that addresed.

I'm not a fan of the orange comments bar at the bottom and haveing a new page come up, I liked it when they were on the same page. (Only on sme news articles, they don't all have that)

I agree with this. Happened on the dumont article through espn too. I don't like that it takes you into a weird different page and the comments are kept separate. Keep it consistent and classic with all the news.


Also another issue I noticed is the breakdown of organization that is seemingly meaningless? What defines a press release vs. industry news (my only example is the announcement of dumont signing with head and the announcement of henrik signing with fulltilt) is it simply the fact that the article on dumont was much longer? I don't know overall it seems more cluttered to have all these different breakdowns. Maybe it's just me resisting change.

is it really necessary to have news articles that are nothing more than a copy pasta of an advertisement on some tech site for a piece of useless electronics?

These articles are not copy/paste... they are literally links to that external site with the ability to overlay Newschoolers comments on them.

The idea is that we want NS to be the place where you can read about anything interesting happening on the internet about the type of skiing you love. We don't want you to have to go elsewhere.

Sometimes news is so well done at another site, that we felt we should simply take you there. However, while you're there, you're still able to jump back to Newschoolers with a small toolbar at the top, and add comments as newschoolers at the bottom.

Look at how many comments there are from Newschoolers overlaid on an ESPN article. Its a pretty interesting statement about how many people care about what they're doing on their own site vs. if that content makes its way over here.

I think my main point though is how many people want to have gear talk in the main news section? generally you look there for competition results, or a movie release, stuff that's directly skiing related. most people wouldn't care that nikon has a new lens out. it would be awesome if maybe gear talk had its own news section for articles exactly like that goggle thing so the main news section stays for skiing related only. if someone cares about all the new fandangled technology then can be a click or two away from the gear talk news section.

I understand what you're aiming for. And I like it.

You want to increase the amount of traffic and have NS as the go to place for everything skiing.

I think you guys have the right idea.

Well TBH not that many people were reading the news the way it was before.

The idea is to have tonnes more content in there. So you'll still be able to get specific content, you'll just have to go to one of the sections which filters out the rest of the stuff. We want the main news to be a cross section of everything that a Newschoolers member would find interesting.

Exactly!

The idea really comes from the tech sites. I love some of the tech blogs where you can just go there and they will scour the internet every day for you to make sure that they have all the hottest latest news. You still end up linking out to other sites, but you can go to one place and know you're not missing anything.

We want to do that for you.

Well is there any way to make the news almost like a blog view right on the home page that we can scroll down and see all the news instead of clicking on those number buttons. I really like the simplicity of a blog view, and the home page is so damn cluttered with all the team and mountain updates.

The main issue with a blog view, assuming I am hearing you correctly, if that there is no consistent formatting. Some articles maybe be small amounts of text, while the next is a huge quantity of photos, the next a video, and finally some external content. The main page would just be a garbled mess and 100ft long. The way it is structured now we have control of how things are displayed and it keeps it clean.

If you want a bigger, expanded list view you can simply go to the news page and see them all listed there

Yeah this - https://www.newschoolers.com/news is designed to give you that style of view.

We'll probably make a few tweaks to the homepage throughout this season, but begin thinking about an overhaul when we get to the end of it.

Right now, the Homepage acts as a portal to an immense amount of data that is on the site. People say its cluttered, but I say its just got a lot of info on it.

Can't comment on the new Powder newstand app.
Along with when I click "comment", it just freezes the article in one place and you can't scroll..

The only thing bugging me about the new news system is I don't find the page all that appealing. Whenever you click on a news stories everything appealing goes away and the page seems white and barren with the different font sizing area looking kind of jumbled. Maybe that's just me.

Also sorry if that is jumbled and hard to read I just wrote a essay test and my brain is gone for the day.

I feel like there are almost too many news stories. I liked it when there was one ever couple days, so that you would thoroughly read it and look forward to the next one.

Now I find myself not really reading them because either:
1. They aren't interesting
2. I miss them because there are so many new ones

So maybe tone down the amount a little bit? just my 2 cents

Give it a bit. We're experimenting with this format.

For the most part people weren't really reading a ton of our old stories. There was less yes, but it didn't get the same amount of views.

We've seen almost a 50% increase in views on the news since the launch of the new system. So though it might be a bit more to follow, there is more views going into it.

THe idea with the new system is that there is much more of what is happening in the world of skiing listed on the site.

Does anyone else like the pacing of the news now?

I came into site discussion to see if there was talk about this, because I think there's way too much. I almost feel like the old style feature news and the "updates" and external links could be in their own section.

Because I, like the guy above, used to read every story that was posted, and just today I realized that I've missed the vast majority of the recent news. Some of which was really interesting and some of it not so much. And I like the way you NS guys tend to write and report things. Some of the external links just don't have that same flow.

I like the ideas you're having, but think maybe there could be some different form of organization.

Also, does anyone read the resort/team updates anymore? I remember when I joined, every single one was a feature story in itself (Jibij, anyone?). Now a lot are just pasted from their promotional facebook page or blog or whatever and aren't all that interesting.

Maybe I'm just getting more and more busy, but I almost feel like there is TOO much info on there and no way for someone to log on NS and get the most important gist of the ski world in a short break of free time.

I understand what NS is trying to do with the news, and I like it.  More views is good.

However, like the gentleman above me stated, can NS slow down the pace of articles coming out?  I like to read feature news stories top to bottom, and this makes it hard.  Just my thoughts

it's really interesting to hear that very few people used to read the news. i definitely read every article posted in news. actually when i would get back home after summers in hood it was always fun to take an hour or two and read up on everything that had gone down in the world of skiing over the preceding few weeks. surprised that more people never took advantage of the only skiing news source that was most relevant to the 'core' demographic.

i like what you guys are doing with the new news system; it's good to be able to come to NS and know that you're going to get everything that's relevant to your interests in one place. however, i agree with what some have said about the pacing... maybe the better question to ask is 'what's newsworthy?'. i feel like i've for sure been getting more content, but now you really have to either log in every day to keep up or else filter the news you're interested in pretty hard.

still, it's a step in the right direction and i'll be interested to see how it develops.

The funny thing is we always felt we were providing too little content to you guys so upped the frequency. There is so much going on in the ski world that we didn't think we needed to be that filter and decide what you actually want to see. Magazines do that because of their limited amount of print room, while we basically can feed you unlimited content. If you go into the News page itself you can filter by what type of content you are looking for, Features, Interviews, Events etc etc so that may help a little if say you are looking to avoid Product and Press Release type stuff.

I don't know if this is meant to happen but when I watch a video in the news section, then click comments, the video keeps resetting and playing over and over. e.g. the henrik with Armada keeps playing in the background and I can't stop it.

maybe there would be a way to make it so when you're watching a video in the news section that's linked to another site (like the Bobby Brown one that was just posted), when you click on the comments it doesn't reload your video making you have to rebuffer the whole thing. it's quite frustrating on a slow connection where you're watching the flick and pause to have it buffer and click on the comments to see what people have said and have the whole thing start from square one.
