DSLR and skiing

So I am going to be purchasing a new camera. Its not water sealed and I was wondering what people think of using DSLR's for skiing.. like will it ruin it being out their or what...

wont get ruined as long as you take care of it, it's not like a little water on the camera is going to destroy it

but you're going to have to buy a hell of a lot more gear than the t2i and kit lens to get decent looking footage. That should be your main concern with using a dslr to film skiing

^ dont be stupid with it. unless you have at least 1200 dollars to spend, get something cheaper. panasonic tm700. you dont sound like you know to much about cameras, and a dslr would be very hard to learn.

Dont buy a different lens first. Save your cash and buy a nice tripod, and when i say nice not some piece of shit 100 dollar tripod...

Before you even start shooting video, learn all you can about the camera. Take photos, understand the properties of shutter speed, aperture and ISO. I mean thoroughly.

Before you buy thinking "I'll get this camera and my edits will automatically have cinematography on the same level as work produced by philip bloom." Research the disadvantages to DSLRs. There are many that make them dificult to use, sure in the right hands they can produce beautiful footage when you cheap out and don't bother to learn the basics it can be painful.

Expect to add these to your cost list.

16gb class 10 sd card - ~$50
Rode Videomic - $125
Tripod - $300-500 at least
Extra batteries - $50
Some form of hand held stabilization - $50-$500
Bag - $50-$100

Those are just the bare essentials. By buying a DSLR you're going to need to be prepared to drop a decent amount of money.

if u guys dont reccommend this DSLR than what do u recommend for around the same price... I want to tm700 but its 1000 bucks

To be fair, a videomic isn't really a necessity right away. i went a long time without an external mic on mine because i wasn't doing any work that required it. the internal mic, especially with ML, worked fine for capturing basic skiing audio and such.


i also went a long time without stabilization. follow cams aren't necessary to make a good skiing video, so a glidecam isn't a necessity right away. a tripod will suffice. additionally, outside of sports, glidecams are really only good for specific tracking shots. they're awful for documentary-style work. handheld isn't that great, but a DIY shoulder rig can be made for fairly cheap.

what we are trying to say is that to get a dslr to take video even close to the tm700, you will have to invest over $1000. tm700, memory card, spare battery, tripod, little handheld rig, and that is like a full set up. For you, I would recommend the canon vixi a hf200, a very solid little camera, which I have heard great things about. Also, i believe there was someone on here selling a tm700 for like $800, and if that is in your budget, it would be perfect, as a I believe there were a few extras
