SNOWTheGameWe base our controls off SKATE, but have made some changes to better fit the way skiing works
I think one big difference between SNOW controls and SKATE controls is how grabs are performed. I'll start by saying that I much prefer the grab system of SKATE. Here's why:
I'm sure you are familiar with SKATE and how you perform grabs. As you use the controller it feels as if you are connected with the skater because you essentially control their legs with the control stick. When you push the control stick up, the skater pushes their legs forward, diving the nose of the board down, allowing you to perform a tail grab. When you pull the control stick down, the skater pushes their back foot down bringing the nose of the board up, allowing you to perform a nose grab.
To me this makes grabs such as nose, tail, etc. easier to perceive and feels more natural to complete. SNOW is the opposite, where when you pull down on the control stick you can perform a tail grab, and vice-versa.
SNOW is essentially the opposite of SKATE in how grabs performed (regarding nose/tail forms of grabs). It would be great to have an option to invert these controls to allow players who come from a SKATE style game to enjoy the game.
I also feel that the grabs were much better refined in SKATE. I know SNOW is still a work in progress, so there's always room for improvement. In SKATE, there were plenty of grabs you could perform and you didn't feel limited by the controller. An example of this was the Rocket Air where a combination of buttons in a logical way led to the trick being performed. If SNOW can implement a similar scheme for performing grabs, the game will begin to feel a lot more coherent.
Things that I think SNOW is doing well with regards to grabs:
Animations are fluid and occur at a good speed
The use of LT and RT to control the left and right hands is excellent
Clicking the analog stick to control variations of grabs (such as true nose and crossed nose)
Things I think could be improved:
Giving users an option to quickly flip between tweaked/non tweaked versions of grabs before takeoff. So that you can come into a jump and perform a True nose without having to click the trigger. This prevents the skier from first grabbing crossed nose and then tweaking it to true nose.
Add more grabs that are present in skiing. Look at the SKATE game and see how tricks such as seatbelt, christ air, judo, and several other tricks used the controller creatively and precisely for these tricks to be performed. Please don't feel limited by the controller/keyboard preventing you from adding more grabs. The SKATE series used the A/B/X buttons to perform variations of grabs, and it worked very efficiently. It would be great to see something similar in SNOW.
