Wanted: web designer

Hey guys, seeing if anyone is interested on helping us out this winter. We have a website a buddy at my college made last year for us but we are looking to make a solid update to it. Rider profiles, a store, ect.

Looking for someone who could help us out with that. As of now we cant reimburse with any money, possibly once we get our funding in line for the season we might be able to budget it or work something out. I know its good for portfolio's so that is a big incentive.

Hoping they could stay on board for the season, post updates, edits, blogs for us.

Not sure if anyone is interested to do it for practically free, but we'd def hook you up anyway possible with sponsor goods and hopefully some money at some point.

I have a friend who is a web designer, Doubt he would do it for free though.

Ya i def understand not doing it for free, like I said we'd hope to compensate somehow. possibly a lump fee for the initial launch then if they could stay on for updates which wouldnt be a ton for the season that'd be sick..

Would you ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? No. It's insulting to anyone in a creative profession, web designers, photographers, artists. Just because we don't have any "expenses" our time is still worth something. Why don't you teach yourself how to do it? Then maybe you'll appreciate the skill and dedication we put into this work.

I know man, but I know a lot of friends in school who have class projects or just want the experience as part of their "education process".

I in no means was trying to insult anyone, ive done a lot of free work to better myself in my field was extending the offer to help us out.

If your not interested thats fine. Also we would try and compensate for your time.

So ask them? There's a reason you haven't/haven't found anyone. They don't need your website on their resume. They can build their own. That's the beauty of web design.

This is the most famous bullshit saying in the freelance world.

If you aren't paying, chances are nobody knows who you are and having your name on a resume means jack shit.

well either way, I appreciate feedback and I guess I will look elsewhere then thought NS would be of help but we cant dish out hundreds of dollars.

Figured there were people who "enjoyed" that kind of stuff like I do with filming and editing and do it for free for some people, guess no one on here does that

Just a heads up for when you look elsewhere: people who "enjoy" doing media work for free don't know their ass from their elbow when it comes to design, and usually aren't worth the trouble.

You're better off learning it yourself. You can make a baller page with html and css, which are both insanely easy to learn. It took me a week from start to finish to learn code and finish my site. It's not complex by any means, but good design is simple anyways.

where did u learn? i'm trying to teach myself. ive done basic programs with C++ before, is it similar?

I have no idea what C++ is like code-wise.

I used a combination of:
1. http://www.csstutorial.net/
2. http://www.w3schools.com/css/
3. My brother who recently majored in new media
4. Years of posting on NS back when you had to use html to embed links and pictures.

Basically HTML lays out your content, and CSS styles it. HTML looks like gibberish, while CSS at least somewhat resembles english, making it much easier to learn than HTML imo.

I might add to this - look into wordpress.

Setting up a wordpress is easy, and getting a template that works well is cheap. Check out www.graphpaperpress.com

After that, you can go in and learn how to style the site in the .css files, since it's already set up for you, it makes it easy to learn how css works by looking at the functionality of a site that works well and you can change and view the changes instantly. I taught myself HTML and CSS stuff a while back, and then started a WP build - learned so much a lot faster than I did trying to start at zero and build out to 100% by looking at the 100% and learning how to manipulate it.

I am actually taking a class on Internet Content Marketing, and each student has to build their own website in wordpress. I'm making a site for my photography and have some ideas that I cant express in WP, which is why i'm interested in learning code. I just typed up my first basic website, and I'm excited to start progressing!
This seems sooo much easier than C++

ya thanks man, I am really hoping to learn illustrator, after effects (better) and web design this winter, but my schedule is already hectic.

I've heard good things about wordpress and will look into that.

Thanks for the feedback, and I def understand people not wanting to do this for free since coding and building a site isnt something that you can do quick and easy but wouldnt mind some help.

illustrator and AE don't really have anything to do with web design. DreamWeaver can be nice and easy if you just build your page in the design screen but IMO if you wanna do it yourself, wordpress is the way to go.

no I know they dont. I just need to learn them so I dont have to wait for the guys we have working on graphics and artwork, I hate relying on people and then they dont come through. plus only yourself know exactly what your looking for

I don't think you understand how much work goes into coding a legit website. It would be much more than just html and css, what you're looking for requires some reasonably advanced javascript which is my opinion is much harder and prone to errors/bugs than css and html.

Twoods is right; since you can't pay for any level of web design, make a wordpress for free, it will probably suit your needs.

judd, gotta agree with mike/woods here

i've been through an intro to web design class, which heavily used dreamweaver. An intro class barely scratched the surface of what can be done, and to me it was pretty difficult to understand. Wordpress would be your best best at this point. If you decide to get yourself dreamweaver and would like a little help i'd be more than happy to try and help you out.

Seriously? What you can do without ANY knowledge in WP is a million times better than anything you'll achieve with a template in DW. Not to mention the community and documentation. There are countless reasons why WP is better.
