Help in FCP 7

Hey guys,
Whenever i try to render something in final cut, i get an error message that says "Insufficient Disk Space" I dont know how I dont have enough space when this is my first project on FCP. When i go to the render manager, there is nothing in there to delete, so im stumped. +K for help.

It says 79.5 MB on Final Cut pro installer. shit, thats my problem. where do i locate them to?

fcp tab -> system settings -> scratch discs option should be right there

I know, but i dont know what to set the scratch disks to, because everything i choose, i still dont have enough space.

if you don't have enough space on any of your drives then you definitely need to get some sort of external hard drive or something in the TB range to keep all your video files on there and not bog down your computer, then you could set the scratch disk to either the hard drive or your comps hard drive.

i got the computer a week ago, its not even close to being full. i dont know know why its saying its full even when this is my first project on FCP, no renders or anything on it, so i dont know what to do.

If FCP starts acting funny, the very first thing you should do is repair disk permissions and trash prefs (google it).

If that doesn't work, it might be your frame rates getting out of sync.

i repaired the disk permissions earlier. and i dont know if this helps. but when i first click on FCP to start it up, it also says theres not enough disk space, but i screw around with it and it usually opens.

what does this look like for you?

Are you still trying to set it to the mounted FCP installer?
if so,
Click set, set it to your desktop or documents or something on your main HD, if FCP is then saying it's still too small, check your HD space with Finder

my guess is you either haven't set it to your real hardrive, or you have massive HD filez you didn't realize were so big

I dont really know what im trying to set it to. i want it on my hard drive. but when i try to set it there i get a message that says "unable to set scratch disk. the selected media is on a write-protected or non-writeable media". and i have almost 400gb of free space on my HD.

youre trying to set it to an exernal? yes? because that message means you need to reformat your drive because its write protected.

no im not trying to set it to an external hard drive. i did have an external hard drive plugged in, but no files were put there. im just trying to put it on my internal.

im going to bump this. i fixed the problems with the writable media, i had to change permission settings or some bullshit. now i have another problem, i have to render after every single CC i make to a video. how do i change this. i am editing in h.264

you cant change it, thats how is it, youre changing how each frame looks and how the pixels are arranged... you have to render.

Do you get a "not rendered" warning, or just green bars above the clips and lower quality playback?

h.264 isn't an editing codec; it's a finalizing codec. You need to transcode all your footage to ProRes LT and edit that. Once you do, you can CC and you can play back the footage in realtime at reduced quality.

its just when i go to play the video, i get a blue screen that says "unrendered". and how do i go about transcoding my footy to ProRes LT?

Download MPEG Streamclip and use that to convert all of your footage.

My bad, I meant blue screen.

It isn't "converting" (that's a different term). Transcoding is when you change the codec into another codec that is more suitable for a job. In this case, you're transcoding for editing.

h.264 isn't meant to be edited. It's meant to be plugged into a TV straight from a camera and that's it. The reason FCP makes you render footage when you hardly make any adjustments (or none at all) is because it can't handle h.264 footage. You need to transcode it using MPEGstreamclip to ProRes LT, and it should work seamlessly. If you don't know how to transcode, google it. There's tons of tutorials on how to do it.

i figured out how to do it. everything in FCP right now is ProRes422(LT), but im still having to render after every little adjustment.

are you sequence settings correct? open a new sequence and drop one of the prores files in and let it change the settings for you then copy/paste your edit in and you shouldnt have red render anymore

still red, i was soposed to transocde it into ProRes422 correct? If so, i must have screwd up somewhere else.

hmm if your sequence settings match up and you're just using 3-way color corrector it shouldnt be red
