You obviously grew up in America with that 90's genre, so we have different tastes.... but BRMC are my favorite thing to come out of America for a while...

I agree with the above post. Bonnamossa is a slick guitar player that combines the bluesy licks of SRV with modern stuff like Eric Johnson.

Other recommendations for unique sounding guitarists:

Pink Floyd/David Gilmour

Vai (Whispering a prayer is a siiiiiick song with a catchy phrase)

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Clapton

George Benson (Listen to affirmation, pretty much sweep picks without distortion and slays it)

Steve Lukather

Mark Knopfler (Listen to sultans of swing to hear some sick finger picking on the solo or Money for Nothing for a sick intro)

To OP, browse the top 100 tabs on Ultimate-Guitar for some songs. Most of them are pretty popular songs. There's some garbage by Justin Bieber and Nicky Minaj, but there's also few good ones mixed in there. What kind of music do you like to play?

Since you're a jimi fan I would say to learn Little Wing. But don't just learn it, learn every little nuance that makes that song what it is. That song can teach you sooooooo much about the blues, horzontal soloing (playing a Eb blues scale), and vertical soloing (soloing over the chords as the band plays over those chords). Theres a reason that Little Wing has been redone by 100000 different people. It's the perfect canvas to branch off of. It's one of my favorite songs to play.

Another epic solo is Another Brick in The Wall by pink floyd. Gilmour hits some HUUUUGE bends on that song and it's one of my favorite to play.

Dave Gilmour is by far my favorite guitarist, but I think this is one of his shittier songs.

If you want to learn a kickass song, learn Echoes. And I don't just learn to play the right notes. Learn to play the notes right. Otherwise you're disgracing the very essence of Gilmour.

1. learn by ear. I made the mistake of not doing that and now my ear is not as good as it should be.
2. If you want challenging, get into metal or jazz. Between the Buried and Me is some difficult stuff to learn.

haha my b wasn't in the best state of mind.... Didn't mean to come off as angry as I did.  It's just that when I was younger, I tried to play the hardest stuff possible.  I would play satriani, vai, classical (asturias, villa lobos), flamenco (vicente amigo), and I even knew some John Butler Trio (Ocean).  I know super claim right? But in retrospect I think it was a dumb way to go about it.  Simplicity is your best friend when writing your own stuff.  Just tryin to help out a fellow musician.   

So, if u just want some cool riffs, no big deal.  All you need to do is find a song you like (radio, youtube, etc), its that simple.

But look into stuff like Al Di Meola or Eric Johnson. Or Vai like others suggested. If you want a challenge and feel like some metal and don't want to play brainless shit, look into Cynic, Nevermore, Symphony X, later day Death, Forbidden, Opeth... (I don't know your skill level but those are pretty demanding of talent) Or som real shred shit like Jeff Loomis (of nevermore), Tony McAlpine, I'll try posting a link. It's late, I'm blabbing haha.
