Yes I know it would be a fairly pointless buy as a video camera but it has revolutionized many things that are the main drawbacks to dslrs.

1st Full Frame DSLR with 720p/60 video
1st Canon DSLR with recording over 12 minutes
1st Canon camera that uses the WHOLE sensor (much less moire/aliasing)
much improved rolling shutter problem.
First full frame HDSLR with a professional build.

Although it would be pointless to buy only for video, those are all very significant features.

yes forgot this! and based on EOS' history, these features (or at least some) will be present on the new cameras coming out in the next year or so

It'll be a real step when they have those features on a body thats is 1000-1500 dollars.

minus the full frame part it could be, but if anyone bought a 1dx for video i would kill them.

why would they throw timecode into a camera cheaper than 2k? their target audience then becomes amateur and budget shooters who probably won't be using stuff like timecode (which is only found in 1k+ audio recorders)

Are you kidding? With nice glass you should use all of it and the larger sensor has many advantages, from producing sharper images to being much better at high iso levels

FF35 does not make sharper images. It is just less prone to show optical flaws assuming you're using FF35 lenses because there is no crop factor. Using s35 lenses on an s35 sensor is equally as sharp.

High ISOs...not really. FF35 DSLRs have such a high megapixel rating that they produce way more noise. Compared to the native s35 sensor on the fs100, which absolutely destroys the 5dmkii in low light.

I sometimes hear people argue that the FF35 produces a more desirable DOF. This is stupid, because with s35 and a fast lens I already only have about an inch of DOF wide open, which is waaaay too little.

And even then, if you use nice enough FF35 glass (zeiss primes) on an s35 sensor, there are no crop factor-induced optical flaws because the lens itself has such high resolution that it provides enough headroom for video use.

Furthermore, most optical flaws occur at the edges. A nice lens stays consistent in the dead center, which is the only part that is visible with a cropped configuration.

The only thing the 5d has it the "look" it produces, its a little different than the t2i/7d. Honestly though, i think buying a 5d for video is kinda pointless, the t2i/7d will be just as good IMO and 2500 for a dslr body in my opinion is not worth it. The only advantage to the 5d is that your lenses are wider, but then they're shorter so you need like a 300 and 400ish lenses.

Definitely. The APS-C Tokina 11-16 is a better lens than any FF35 UWA I've ever seen from Nikon or Canon. And for backcountry my 70-200 gets more reach.

I've been thinking of "upgrading" to a 4/3 sensor for shooting BC because I find even a 70-200 on an APS-C doesn't give me enough reach sometimes.

I was really close to ugrading to a ff recently, i guess thats not as flawless of a plan as i though. curious to see if the 5d mkiii will be worth it tho

its really not necessary for video at all, bigger sensor with more MPs = more problems. the fs100 sensor is 2MP for a reason.

I still don't understand why anyone would buy this camera unless they were a serious photographer.  It has no video advantage over any pro-sumer camera out there.  6800 is a large chunk of change for any camera.  I honestly wouldn't spend that much on a DSLR as I'm not a huge photo guy.  If you want video in the DSLR form factor  wait for the 7DII or 5DIII instead of breaking the bank on something that isn't that much of an upgrade from the current releases, and costs a boatload.

I never said anyone should buy this for video.... That would be retarded. thing is though, there are some pretty serious advances in the video mode that should be noted as they might be present on future cameras

Very true.  I'm sure they'll continue to imporve.  I think as time goes on this camera will still improve.  Canon actually said they're taking more of RED's old approach.  In announcing products, taking in what the masses say and developing more, and re working ideas before release. 

Video is on Cinema5d where I heard this info.

Now.  When they put this technology in a 7DII or 5DIII body it will be something that is worth it.  It is releasable at under 2,000 IMO. 

I like that Canon kept this camera more photo oriented, as it should be and the shutter is crazy fast.

What I really want to see is this tech, plus a true HD feed via HDMI out and your starting to look better.  Although I firmly believe alot will change pending Nov 3 from Canon's video announcements.  I'm sure we'll see some of that tech in future DSLR's.

You've never had the chance to play with the Nikkor 14-24 f2.8?

It most definitely blows the Tokina away, but other than that I agree that there's no better option.

i think the fact the tokina goes to 11 makes it better, 14-24 is almost a pointless range on a crop.

I've never personally shot with that lens, so take this for what it is, but based on many of the thorough tests I've seen with it it is indeed an awesome lens. Still though, it doesn't go down to 11mm, which I really like about the Tokina.

I guess the key point is that there is a viable alternative dedicated to APS-C, with the added bonus of extended telephoto range.

I really see no reason to shoot FF, unless it's for photo, in which case I definitely prefer it.
