Starting in the Park

Ok guys this season I really want to become proficent in the park. Can you guys give me so newbie pointers, like where to start and what to do.

no just starting to get started in the park, I mean I can comfortable go of kickers and have hit a few small gap jumps. But still not any good on the rails or the pipe. Whats the key in the transition onto the rail

get some huuuuge speed and huck yourself off the biggest jump you can find and get inverted but dont come back around. please.

180's and switch everything even the smallest stuff-helps air awareness and switch up anything you would normally do stright up (take of or land switch diff grabs get the feel)

start eyeing up the end of the rail pop a little if u need to and make sure u comit in the air and get ur skis perpindicular 100% and keep a nice wide base

i just hit jumps for like 2 months, by the end of the season, i was doing a 60 ft kicker

for rails, remember, rails are slippery. usually when I see people try the first time, they expect all this friction so they kind of get onto it with their edge like they think it will low them down. then they fall. get onto it really square and land with your weight straight over the rail. and watch the end of the rail.

hey man. aight one KEY thing is to have Air Awareness. You will learn this in time and with practice. For rails i would start on a mail box rail. Come at the rail with a medium speed, hit the jump and pop a bit. Spin a 90 and land on the rail. Once you are on the rail eye the end of it. Make it to the end and turn off. One thing you need to remember about rails is these 2 things. Don't jump way over the rail, just enough to get on top. 2, make sure you come STRAIGHT at the rail. If you dont you will land on your bases and slide off the other side. Land on the rail on the base of youre skis RIGHT under yuor boots.

u wont remeber any of that shit when your heading towards your first rail. it just takes practice and try to look at the end of it the whole time.

yea, when i tried my first rail this sesason, i just didnt think about it and did it i got the whole thing within like 4 or 5 tries. and it was a tree low my friend found in the woods, so it had bumps in it

when we are all just starting out, there were a lot of pointers you could get, like the 90 turn, or look at the end of the rail and stay focused, blah blah blah. play on boxes, fall, get wrecked. boxes have single handedly softened the learning curve for jibbing non snow features. as far as jumping goes, try to remember that skiing is in fact one of the most insane things you could be doing in this life, and you;re about to take it to the next level. dont look at it as a seperate entity, think more like its part of your run, and its a goofy roller. start small, work your way up and keep doing it, even after you crash.

i personally wont do shit unless i;ve got a helmet, and this season, my old fart ass is going to wear crash pads for my hips, elbows and shoulders. I never thought to do this before, but i just got into down hill mtn biking, and thats something i would never do with out the full get up, so why not on ice off of 70 foot tables. makes too much sense to me.

work up to stuff. for example, do boxes before rails. get comfortable with jumping and getting air before spinning. take one thinkg at a time.

what it comes down to in the end is a crapload of practice, anybody can do anything if they just practice hard at it, but its good to pickup some pointers from people that are in the park with you because they can see what your doing right or wrong - also start small and add to the trick to progress i.e 180 -> 180 safty -> 360 -> 360 safty ect.

before your park opens go skiing a lot. Hit every little jump and always be pushing yourself. Learn to ski fast, really fast. If you can already do that learn to ski really fast switch. On Icey days or windy or just shitty days where the park is crap, find the hardest run at your hill and rip down it as fast as you can, if that isn't hard for you then rip down it switch. Comfort at high speeds will lead to comfort on rails and in the air. Jim

i'd say start at the top of the lift, and point your skis downhill. aim for the park while making your pizza turns.

my 2 cents, don't do boxes too much because they will throw you off when you go to hit rails, i found to hit my first rail i would come in with alot of speed, think about popping up and 90 and landing on the rail, stay on it as long as you can, you'll probably touch the rail, and get off, but eventualy you'll figure out the rail, and you'll feel the locked on sence where you look at the end of the rail and konw you're going to make it. you'll begin to slow down and be more comfortable going at a slower speed. as you move on to other rails like kinks, and such, you just got to trick your self in to thinking it's the same thing as a straight rail.
