Fitted for ACL Brace.

I just got fitted for my custom brace from a company called BREG. The brace is super heavy duty and the tech/fitter was extremely informative. My confidence has gone up regaurding skiing witha brace now. here is a pic of the brace I got measured for including the same color.

For those who have skied in a heavy duty brace how is it? did it take a while to get used to?

I will keep everyone updated when I ski with it.

I've got the same one, you don't really notice it at all. Except for if you try to sit on your bindings, I think. I can't remember cause it's been so long since I've skied. But overall it's not uncomfortable, just wear the sleeve thing that comes with it. That helps hold it in place.

I skied half a year in a CTi brace that looks very similar, super easy to get used to.  I'm not sold on whether or not it helps (I think it actually did some damage to my knee) but it does help mentally.

i have a custom one, forget what it's called. skiing with it is chill. like that guy said, wear the sleeves that come with it. make sure you put stickers on it, and walk around with it before you put it on so everyone knows how cool and way more pro you are after surviving a knee injury.

I have the breg fusion, wearing it right now, had surgery June 1st, gotta wear it full-time till thanksgiving. fits perfectly under baggy jeans and I rarely notice it's there.

that being said, it doesn't provide full protection while skiing. post-ACL tear and pre-surgery, I was skiing with the brace and I landed backseat and re-blew my knee, separating scar tissue from another tendon or some shit. so you should always still be careful when skiing with the brace. keeping your legs strong as fuck is a good way to avoid injury.

^ you have to wear your brace full time. that sounds like you body is going to rely on the brace and not heal completely. A big part of rehabbing a knee is just walking and standing around building those stabalized muscles. I had full knee reconstruction in january. ACL MCL Maniscus and LCL... i didnt ever have to be in a full time brace / 10-11 months out im good to go.

Isn't this brace only supposed to prevent a tear from torque based forces? The only way it could prevent a tear from backseat landings would be to limit your range of motion quite a bit, or have some sort of force absorption system that would fight against the brace bending.

Well backseat doesn't happen to me. I ski board. There aren't any tails to backseat. Flame on. Anyways I like the fitter and the brace so far. I'll update

I was under the impression that it only helped prevent hyperextension, can't see how it prevents twisting injuries. Anyway I feel that the brace introduces extra leverage. I definitely felt it putting a disproportionate amount of force on either my quads or shinbone landing a little backseat or ollying. Again, it does give you confidence.

Doesn't it kind of prevent twisting at the knee, and instead promotes the entire leg twisting? Thereby relieving strain on the ligaments?

Ive been using a donjoy brace for like 4 years now, seriously after the first week you don't notice it and after a few weeks putting it on becomes normal too.

Breg>Donjoy,

Donjoy is cheaper but made from poorer materials.

Had both, and I find Breg way more comfortable

Damn...my DonJoy brace was $1600, so I guess I'm not enough of a baller for a Breg.

I have to use my brace every time I go hiking, skiing, or anything strenuous at all until my knee completely disintegrates. I don't really notice it too much skiing, especially if it's just at the resort. I do notice it biking because it rubs on my top tube and it's right on my leg (i wear it over long underwear skiing), but it's not a big deal. Braces suck, but you're better off finding a way to live with it than you would be bitching about it.

Donjoy's aren't that bad, I've got 2 after tearing both my ACL's and I barely notice them when riding. walking long distances and jumping on tramps is a different story, so painful after a while.

They are cheaper though, got mine for ~400 each online after i tried a few on at physio and found out what size I was and Which brace felt the best.

i've got two Townsend Design braces. They are the shit. For full effect, make sure you go to a fitter that casts your legs and sends in the molds, then they are like knee gloves.

I'm extremely lucky that I have baller insurance. the brace, the fitting, and shipping were all 100% covered by my insurance.

the best way to prevent reinjuring your knee is to strengthen the muscles in your knee. I skied a full season with no problems whatsoever like 9 months out of surgery.
