How does Hoji slay so hard on Dynafit bindings?

We all know Eric Hjorleifson skis some big lines and big cliffs. And he does it all on Dynafit bindings which aren't very burly. Dynafit is known for being the lightest AT bindings on the market. I thought Dukes stood out as the only AT binding worthy of gnarly terrain. I must be wrong but how come more freeskiers don't use Dynafit?

most likely uses frankenstein dynafits, and also he lands dead center perfect every time, so he never even comes close to releasing...he is hoji after all.

they really are pretty burly, but it would kind of make sense for him to be on plums instead

I may be wrong but what I have read is that he has a pair that has a disabled DIN on them, so he can literally lock them out to the point that they cannot release.  At that point the only problem is that the binding could break, but they are fairly durable when all moving parts are locked down from what i understand.

maybe its how it is in hockey..
for example, if a goalie doesnt like the pads that his sponsor provides, they will get him diferrant brand pads and paint em or some shit to make them look like hes using their pads. or theyl just do anything differant the way he wants. maybe its like bindings?

if i remeber correctly, i believe CR Johnson used to lock his out too cause he didnt like being able to come out.

you can't "disable the din", you can however ski with the toe locked out in touring mode, meaning the toe is not going to let you out regardless (if you pulled out of the ski, the toe piece would still be locked in the tech fittings). you can't lock the heel out though, hoji is a pretty small dude and obviously very light on his feet and agile.

Two things:

People underestimate Dynafits. Especially here.

The guy is light, and I wouldn't be surprised to know that what 123ski is true.

eric comes into the store i work at quite a bit in the winter, to work on his boots and mount skis etc. i asked him why he he switched to dynafits for the most part. he said he liked how low they sat on his ski, he could actually lockout his din, their light, also he does tonnes of touring and wanted something super reliable.

thats a retarded statement when youre going that fast it doesnt matter how heavy you are there is so much force when you are shredding or falling if u catch a hard edge on the wrong angle you are getting fucked

i looked at some of the dynafits they go up to 12 bindings but people say when you lock all 3 things down they are pretty much impossible to come out of

you are more likley to fuck yourself from dynafits not ejecting than ejecting too easily

He is definitely not on Plums. The new dynafit radical is burly as hell. The toes lock out, and honestly if you arent spinning anything, who is going to eject more than a 12 in just the heel anyways when the toe is locked down? thats burly. The biggest problem with at tech bindings is the boots usually suck. hoji basically pieces his own boots together so problem solved

Locked out Dynafits aren't really totally locked out, they do release at the equivalent of a really high DIN (but not DIN since no certification).

Anyways Hoji lands and skis with close to perfect position almost all the time. The more centered your riding is, the less stress you put on your bindings, in theory one could ski without bindings if you had a perfect position all the time.

Doug Coombs skied fritschis, he could do that because of his technique, a lot of good skiers blow them up like crackers.

The problem with Dynafits are that they rip out too easy on fat skis, which I think is why we see Hoji mostly use them for pow. The new Dynafit has a wider drillpattern and should stay in place better.

So, light skier, good snow, excellent technique and the fact that he is Hoji = great skiing on Dynafits.

100% possible to lock the heel out. you have to take the binding apart weld the primary spring then put it back together then mount it.

dynafits rock, a select few on here have been preaching this. cant wait to try out the plums. its true for some reason the boots are the weakness. we will see how mine do with new liners 3 years in my garmonts and they wore out.

interesting, i'd think "locking" the heel release wouldn't allow the tower to spin, meaning you couldn't switch from alpine to our mode or to the different tour riser positions. any more info on that? never read about a single person doing so.

Yea, I realize what centered means.. but you cant ski down a run without something holding the skis to your feet ... even hypothetically. Bottom of ski boots are hard plastic, and the top of skis are slippery.. unless I'm missing something

my friends ot some dynafits really similar and he can fully lock hemself in on the really sketchy lines. pretty sweet idea his bc skis are soo fuckin light its ridiculous

Since, in theory, the perfect position will only create a pressure downwards. If you stand still on ice, which is slippery, you don't have any issues slipping around.

Yes, but skiing isn't standing still... you're sliding down a mountain, and there is friction on the skis from the snow beneath you (which is more than the friction from boot to ski) which is why I don't think it would work, even in theory

Friction snow-ski < boot-ski, except some top sheet materials, temperature, etc.
Otherwise it would be impossible to ride with someone on the back of their skis without holding on to him/her.

Uh...  That's EVERY PAIR EVER hahahaha  They have a lockout so your boot doesn't come out touring uphill.  It's not recommended, but you can ski down in lockout and it's metal on metal with no release so it's pretty much just not coming off.

I also used to think dynas were sketch, then I toured and skied in them in some shady green mountains terrain and I was sold.  I never prereleased, didn't have any problems getting in or out, and they have never even heard of slop.  The touring function?  Fuck it's like being on a magic carpet hahahaha I had over a mile of flat to go over first, followed by three hours of uphill and it was just so much more fluid and lighter I never got tired. 

Just bought my buddys plum guides, which for the are kiddies are just way more reliable than dynas, way burlier and still somehow lighter.  I'm going to secks them when they get here fo sho.

Take 5 seconds to understand how the bindings release, that should shed some light into why they have such good retention. Even without the toe "locked" the toe of the bindings will not release unless the heel comes out first.  

You can imagine tip deflection or any awkward force placed on the tip end of the ski, places torque on the toe of the bindings. Any force placed on the tail of the ski, places torque on the heel. 

Like many others have said, smooth skiing places little stress on the binding. When you're doing it wrong, and skiing poorly. Awkward force is places on the tip end of the ski, therefore the toe piece takes that stress. The tails rarely see "awkward" force, unless you are crashing. Once you fall, and smack the tail of the skis in an awkward direction, the heel will release, which then releases the toe.

If you catch your tips using dynafits, they most likely will not release. You will then either rip the screws out of the ski, destroy your knee, face plant or roll into a front flip and ski away like a boss.

There should be more theads about kids questioning the safety of the bindings due to them not releasing, not questioning the integrity of the construction or retention. Not that they are indestructible, like all things, they can break. Though Dynafit has great customer service, and replacement parts are shipped quickly and mostly free of any cost.

Plum started making bindings in 2007. This is the first year of real production. Their bindings look awesome. For the most part, a carbon copy of dynafit. The milled Al is a good upgrade from the stamped steel that dynafit offers. As for durability, and customer service, only time will tell how they stack up.

I'm totally against locking out the toes. This does very little to prevent you from crashing. Yet does increase the danger/risk of injury during a fall, or avalanche.

Bottom line, Hoji slays hard regardless.
