Apple, ya done goofed

Apple is heading in a bad direction. Between Lion and most importantly FCPX, you guys have lost a lot of what you had. I've used macs since 2008, so ive gone from leopard (awesome) to snow leopard (awesomer) and lion (which SUCKS). I am re installing Snow Leopard, I gave lion a 2 month chance. everything about Lion sucks more than before, wont get into it, but if you havent gotten it, dont! I gave FCPX more of a chance than almost anyone, and am fucking sick of it. I thought, oh its just change, once i get used to it it will be a lot better. NO. Reinstalling FCP7 right now (which was great).

Hope this isnt the direction Apple is heading in...

I think this weekend Im gonna try and learn the in's and out's of premiere... and look into reinstalling snow leopard.

yeah i dont know what everyone is complaining about. i got my imac a few days ago, just got fcp 7 and its not slow at all, the only problem with the mac is it has freezes every so often, is it because of lion? and remember this is like 4 days old. help? and sorry im not trying to thread jack.

Doesn't support FCP7 or any of it's plugins. And in my opinion, its a bunch of unnecessary stuff that takes up space

I mean for the OS you just have to install a new update and it should work, ive used a system with lion and used fcp7 on it.

Wrong.

FCPX, Aperture and Lion are being designed in a way so they can run on a new, future generation of iPads and MacBook Airs. While right now iPads are pretty limited and MacBook Airs are just tiny MacBooks, they are planning for things to change. They'be been pretty good at predicting these things.

The only big mistake they made was using the PRO name and the Final Cut brand for FCPX, making it seem like a rip off, while it is actually an entirely new product. They could have just called it Final Cut X and not confuse people.

Apparently they will continue developing a pro version after all, and I'm sure the X version will continue to get better and be available from desktop workstation to iPhone.

Lion makes my laptop feel like an iPad. Most of all, they did away with spaces/expose...launchpad or whatever it's called is insanely impractical.

You know how you double-tap the home button on an iPhone to display open apps? That's essentially what launchpad is. Not a valid substitute for expose/spaces.

mission control just combined both spaces and expose together, if you hit the old expose button (or whatever you've set it to) or 3 finger swipe up it shows all the apps running in one space and what's going on in other spaces allowing you to switch more seamlessly...I don't see how it's that much different...

I honestly haven't had any issues with lion...other than the codec issues which have been/are being resolved pretty quickly (I'm pretty sure I've fixed all of them). It's really not THAT much different that snow leopard...it's a bit more gimmicky, which is more for the masses (remember, apple has pretty much always been about making easy to use, gimmicky products that have mass appeal). Like I said, I haven't noticed any real problems with it, and any problems I have noticed have been getting better with every system update, I've been running it since the day it came out and don't really see a problem...so, yeah.

lion's gestures are super different and whack too. if you want your gestures back how they were in snow leopard i recommend getting better touch tool to remap them.

Some of the lion pad gestures can get really annoying but I think that overall its pretty good. I am disapointed with FCP just because of how much it changed....

All of this complaining highlights the people who don't know anything about their machine.

You can go into settings, hit trackpad, and customize what your finger gestures and such will do. Mine is identical to what I had on Snow Leopard because I'm used to it and I like it. You don't have to download something to show you how to change your preferences.

Expose, spaces, etc.....that still exist. Not sure if it's called the same thing, but 4 fingers up and I can see everything on my Mac. Full screen apps made me forget about spaces as they take their own virtual screen. Mail alone works so much better it's worth the $30 to me.

And FCPX was not a fuck up, it was completely misadvertised as professional software. FCP7 works fine on Lion, what's the problem?

Trackpad swipes are stupid. I know how to use system preferences, and it doesn't give me the same options as before.

It's just annoying that Apple insists on changing things so often. I realize that's partially the reason why they're so successful, but it's annoying as hell for those of us who want consistency.

By the way, Avid is the standard because it has remained consistent while still becoming more capable. They don't waste their time with trendy redesigns because it doesn't serve a practical purpose for people who work by a specific protocol. It only works for average joes who are easily wow'd by trivial frills and need to constantly be presented with something new in order to overcome their boredom and keep buying their products.

I've had zero issues with the new OS. Not one crash, if you don't like some of the new features, then don't use them. No one is forcing you.

there is no longer a standard platform, to each production company their own. Working in broadcast I see far more FCP systems than Avid, (it's like 10-1 at this point) which is impressive given avid's head start in the industry. I'm speaking strictly from professional experience, not regurgitating some old dog professor's rants. I mean have whatever opinions you want, your own or what you've been told, but don't act like Avid is beating out FCP because they don't update their shit, the only hold they have is because they have been around for longer. If FCP and Avid were released at the same time it would be like fcp VS Casablanca

The company I work for got rid of Avid a few years ago and we are now using FCP 7 and CS 5.5. I guess they saved a bunch of money by switching.

For middle-upper rung production houses, you're right. FCP and Adobe seem to be pretty standard. But the top guys are still running Avid on Linux systems if I'm not mistaken.

I work in a Mac lab and the rep came in recently to try to sell us all the new software and operating systems that are coming out in the future.  My recommendation to all is KEEP snow leopard and KEEP FCP 7 or switch to Premiere.  Lion is just the beginning of the new direction they are heading in and I have been a loyal Mac user for years but if they go where they say they are going then I will be buying a PC as my next computer purchase.

if i were you i'd probably give a little look at your system preferences before throwing accusations around.

in snow leopard, the standard show desktop gesture was 4 fingers up and the standard exposé gesture was 4 fingers down. lion replaced exposé with mission control, but there is no option in system preferences to make mission control 4 fingers down and show desktop 4 fingers up. this is why i got better touch tool to remap the gestures the way i like them.
