Question for you car buffs

I'm going to be getting a 1965-70 mustang pretty soon, not completely sure on the year yet, but it will be a 289 V8, and i was wondering how i could give it a deeper more powerful sounding rumble? And what kind of sound system, something not too expensive but has decent sound. For the sound i know i can change the headers and cam shaft but i dont know what kind to get or anything like that.

I'm rocking the folgers extra large exhaust tip. Thing sounds like a champ. Wasn't very expensive either.

Get a magnaflow, sounds awesome and it's not over the top and trashy. I have one on my suv with a similar sized engine, and it rumbles at idle and it's not obnoxious, but when you punch it it screams

How will changing the cam shaft effect sound? That will just fuck up the timing of you engine and it won't run. Pretty much any muffler you put on a large v8 will sound good

Hey! im learning :( and to the guy asking about the camshaft, my dad told me thats what gives the engine the sound that isnt just a flat long sound but kinda broken up

Which part was wrong in your opinion? A cam is the timing of the valves, and I've put multiple exhuast systems on my cars over the years, all v8s, and they all sound great.

or

Drill holes in the exhaust.

or

Remove the exhaust system, bend two lengths of it using a vice and a baseball and aim that shit right under the doors.

or

Put rocks in the muffler.

or

Loosen the exhaust clamps to give it that awesome rattle.

I understand what a camshaft is and does, but saying that swapping your cam will fuck up your engine and cause it to stop working is just wrong.

I interpreted the changing of the cam shaft as changing the timing of it, not swapping it out...

headers would obviously be your most performance oriented choice, but look at what kind of muffler you have first. Glasspacks will give you the rawest sound, most notorious muscle car sound,but a lot of modern mufflers with performance-oriented baffling can give it a more fuel-injected racer sound. It all depends on the sound you are going for and what muffler will give you that sound, then pick headers, intake manifold, and that should give you what your looking for.

im looking for that notorious muscle car rumble. and yeah, i dont know a lot about cars, my dads going to help me do the easier work and he has a buddy that restores old cars, hes better at body work but he should be able to do the other stuff as well. Also, colour ideas? i want something pretty uncommon for old mustangs that looks good, im thinking a deep metallic blue, a nice shade of purple, or black.

I think the logical choice is that 289 Windsor...

Also don't straight pipe it. please. put a nice exhaust on it. I'm not an expert on that though (or anything to do with fords really)

glass packs with some decent headers would be my recommendation...and I've seen some really cool metallic brown mustangs with white interior that really stand out and look good

Do what every kid back in the 70s did, throw a glasspack on there....Cherry Bombs or Thrush's.

Cams will pretty much add some ponies by changing the timing. Fairly easy to swap and tune, but from the sounds of it YOU should not be doing that just yet...

Headers are probably the biggest influence on sound, they arent cheap though.

Youre getting a 289 Ford though, thats a baby V8 compared to the street thumpers of the 70s....

i have a cherrybomb glasspack muffler on my jeep cj7 with a stock straight 6cyl and it sounds so mean, i've even had people driving a V8 rev my simple 6cyl engine simply because they loved the sound of it :D

you are not worthy of a muscle car if you are going to put a sound system in it.


make your own pipes, have duals and then x them so that they meet and come apart with a v bend in each pipe and a small cut so that the air gets rumbled between both pipes when they meet.

this will give good sound and then just run them straight out, but if you dont want straights do the same thing and put glass packs on.

Well your in the clear considering its a classic car- meaning nothing needs to be restricted.


I would go to a reputable exhaust shop around you- have them weld up a nice 2.5 inch exhaust(nothing bigger than that- its a NA motor and you'll lose back pressure thus loosing HP)

I would run one resonator, just so you dont have a raspy sound but rather a deeper rumble.


And yes throwing in a more aggressive cam does give it a more broken up sound to it a idle as well as more hp- however cams are usually a bitch to install and you need to choose the perfect one for your style of driving.



The whole exhaust welded would cost you anywhere from 300-500 depending on the shop and what company makes your res


Also fuck mufflers- the only people that need mufflers are old people and women

if you are getting a muscle car it needs to be a v8

straight pipes

4 barrel

6 speed

what year? if its a mach 1 or 2 and you dont get a v8 it is just a disgrace, i have no clue why they ever made a smaller engine for those models.

however if it is a 64 or 65, they were the rich kids car at that time and werent quite yet a pony car so a 6 would make more since there.

if you are going to want to drop a base in it then get a suby and be a bro

although it wouldnt make since to do any of the things i mentioned to any era mustang, except for maybe the 80's 5.0's they were probably the best built engines out of ford.
