Wifi extender

are there ways to expand a wifi network? my house is pretty long and our router is one side. the other side has really slow, if any internet. so would there be a way to buy a special device, put it in the middle of the house, and extend my wifi network so the rest of the house can get good connection?
i googled wifi extenders and just want to know if anyone has done this.
also, directions would be awesome.
