Catching edges

tommorow i'm gonna go at my home mtn for a ski tune- up,
and i'm unsure of : when your edges are freshly sharpened ,do you have more chance to eat shit on a rail ?

should i wait to be still able to jib on my pvc rail or it wouldn't matter if i get them tuned - up ?

/inb4 i dont understand ( might be normal im french... )

Let them get detuned underfoot.
It won't really hamper performance on the piste but the chances you will catch your edge on rail/boxes will be far less.

DO NOT TUNE PARK SKIS(unless they are pipe only skis)

sharp edges= death on rails/high chance of hooking on landings of jumps

Can i tell to the shop tech to sharp them a little bit? Is it possible or edges can only be sharpened in one way?

just do not sharpen them, park skis do not need to be tuned, only race/carving skis

And its not really a big deal to leave em unsharpned for when i go in other places than in the park? I just have one pair of skis , so will they be still skiable all around the mtn?

of course, i detuned my skis and they handle fine. just watch out for ice while hauling ass down groomers and you should be fine!

For me I only allow a dedicated park ski to be untuned. You have be conscious about it outside the park. It's doable but be conscious of it. I was charging at Killy once on a pair of my derived cryptos and hit one of killys infamous random ice patches and darn near killed myself. It was on a turn and I jus went right into the trees. Only knocked the wind out of me but I was carvin a hard turn and then I was on my side....haha. So if ya do that and go outside the park be mindful that your edge will not bite ice.

even after skiing in the park for a while your ski will become detuned so this is inevitable. but yes you must watch out for ice.

Alright ! And is p-tex really necessairy? I have like 2 scratched that i could make the tech repair but is it worth it to repair them?

If they are to the core, (you are seeing wood/something else other than base material) you should always ptex, otherwise the ski could absorb water and rot. If they aren't a core shot or otherwise really deep its really up to you, if you want your skis to look nice then sure, but I doubt you will notice a difference performance wise.

As for the edges, if you are really serious about hitting rails and stuff then I would ask the tech to detune the edges underfoot. This will prevent you from catching edges and also helps prevent edge cracks. If you are a strong skier you probably won't really notice the difference as long as you aren't ripping GS courses or something.

This is wrong. If you are going to have you're skis completely detuned it's going to suck to ski them outside the park. Find that happy medium.

I have never been held back by a detuned edge while carving as far as I know, if you just detune them underfoot, (and not like completely rounded or anything) then IMO you should be fine.
But I'm not a racer, so take that with a grain of salt.

What I do is keep the tip and tail fairly sharp but detune underfoot so you get the best of both worlds. It's a great setup if you only have one pair of skis.

YOU CAN GET A SANDING SPONGE AT HOME DEPOT FOR 1.95. i just picked one up after watching this video, it works amazingly like you wouldnt believe also it really good if your just learning how to do it cuz its pretty hard to fuck it up with this

also go to aisle 10-painting section...do not wander around like an idiot like me in the sanders and sanding accersories

your ability has far more to do with how a ski will turn then how it is tuned. if you can't carve on a park ski, you should probably take a few lessons

So if I wanna ski 100% park, and don't really care how the ski performs outside (will just be used to get me to the park) should I detune the whole thing? When detuning do I just hold the gummy stone straight up and down?

Also, if you tune skis that you plan on using for rails, you will far reduce the skis durability. When you slide a rail with sharp edges, it far increases the pressure on the edges causing them to crack wayy more. If you want to get edge cracks tune your park skis.

put a 45° angle in my edge under the binding. you might not be able to carve super hard, but on 20m radius early rise skis that wouldnt be fun if they were sharp. i love the feeling of dull edges on groomers.
