Our Definitive Movie

No one has yet thrown enough money at a skiing project to do this yet. However, if the Candide Kamera movie comes out and is as awe-inspiring as the edits, it could very be the "one". "If You Want to Fly" was pretty damn good, it just wasn't long enough to be the epic. Maybe if they got some more funding and more athletes they could do it, too.

I'm just gonna be the one to say it, I'm not scared, I didn't like Art of Flight that much.

As has been said, there has not been the right approach to the project yet.

Creating a 'definitive movie' like that requires a budget that hasn't been seen in the ski movie industry. The ski movie industry is also focused around the 'each company produces 1 movie a year' mentality. Either one of these companies will have to devote multiple years to one project, or a new company will step up to the challenge.

I would even argue that Art of Flight wasn't nearly as definitive for snowboarding as Life Cycles was for mtn biking. Sure it was cool and big budget, but it was still too focused on capturing the big tricks for it to really capture the nuances and minute details and emotions that define snowboarding the way Life Cycles did for biking. I don't really bike or snowboard, but Life Cycles made me want to fucking go ride a bike. I really felt like I understood WHY the riders love mountain biking. Art of Flight, while being a super entertaining watch, didn't do the same for me.

But I certainly hope somebody takes the same approach to a ski film soon, could be epic.

I agree for the most part but i feel like without a doubt the money is there its just that the film industry is so splintered and just getting more so every year. There were more movie trailers this year than the past two years combined (not actual statistic). Which i like and it progresses the sport i mean when you have blackout and sack lunch two polar opposites dropping in the same week its pretty damn good year. This splintering prevents any huge amount of money being directed to one company. Who knows which is better in the long-term of the sport?

haha eh I think if you added the budgets of PBP, Level 1, Meathead, 4bi9, Stept, Inspired, and TSP, it still probably wouldn't be quite as big as the budget for Art of Flight. It's not because there are so many companies (snowboarding has a ton of film companies), it's just that there isn't a company like Brain Farm involved in skiing right now. If one of the existing companies were to undertake this kind of project, it would mean pushing for a huge budget from a sponsor to not only cover travel, salary, etc. but also a ton of cameras and camera-related stuff, a lot of which Brain Farm already owned.

It's not that companies have to combine (Life Cycles was made by only two guys, how they got a company to give them enough money to fund the project is beyond me), it's just that one company is going to have to figure out a way to take multiple years off to work on a project and find a sponsor who is willing to drop enough money to make it happen.

It probably is? i don't really see your point though. i just meant that even the budgets of the big dogs + those of the smaller guys still isn't what Art of Flight's was.

How can you say those are definitive movies that will be loved for years to come when they are both very new movies.  They have to stand the test of time first. 

Also, for me, that movie is Ski Movie.

i don't believe skiing has a definitive film. there are plenty of ski flicks that have changed things for sure, but in my opinion, there's not a single movie pivotal enough to be called "skiings definitive movie." Also, skiers these days are far too opinionated and ignorant to take all forms and styles of skiing into consideration. some people cant look past a pair of skinny pants or a large sweatshirt. also, the age spectrum is too wide. no old dog is gonna buy into, for example, the new stept movie as being "revolutionary." same goes for all the little trendy 15 year olds who grew up in the era of doubles. movies like the game have absolutely no meaning to them.

I'm not really sure what you thought I was implying? This isn't a PBP jab. If i wanted to do that, well I'd send text messages, not NS posts. What I meant was is you take a company like TSP, I'm pretty sure come find us had a budget pretty near $0, it's just adding zero to the list which is irrelevant. I guess that was more geared to the guy you replied to.

Oh I knew you weren't making a pbp jab, I just didn't understand what you meant by your post, just couldn't word it in more friendly sounding way.

Come Find Us probably had a budget in the thousands (I could easily be wrong, but giving a bunch of gear and several hundred is probably nothing for a lot of sponsors), and I can guarantee Set Your Sights did.
