Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know about a video blog I'm doing for a class (and hopefully beyond). The class is actually titled "Video Blogging" so we have specific assignments and whatnot, but our professor also gives us a lot of freedom to do what we think will work.

I'm working on this with a classmate (Pat) and things have pretty much just started so we only have two videos up that the class was assigned to do. The first project was to shoot a basic introduction:


and the next assignment was to shoot a how-to video relating to our topic:



Eventually we plan on creating more videos like what we explain in the introduction, but I figured I'd share what we have so far. We're totally open to feedback as I think that's an important part of video blogs, so let us know your suggestions/advice/criticism!

I really like what you've got so far. How expensive is a basic version of the software and equipment?
I don't know if you guys are into production at all, but if you could maybe take us through making a remix or an original song, that would be pretty awesome. Another thing that might work is explaining what do you for a live setup when you're dj'ing, assuming you have your own, and then maybe explaining how you decide on what to put in a set and when.

Thanks man I appreciate the feedback! As for price, I think that setup (http://www.amazon.com/Hercules-DJ-4780474-Console-RMX/dp/B0018CEOA6/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1319300786&sr=1-1) ran Pat around $300 from Guitar Center but there's also cheaper options.

Unfortunately neither of us have any production experience so we wouldn't be much help there, but I like your suggestion about explaining a live setup. That how-to video was a beginning assignment just to get everyone used to using and appearing in front of the camera so hopefully in the next few weeks we'll have an episode like what I've been imagining- footage from a night out showing/reviewing the venue, atmosphere, and artist as well as other peoples reaction.

Living right near NYC we have access to big name DJ's pretty much every week so my goal is to produce these short videos to give others a look at the music and nightlife. I'm unemployed right now, though, so I can't make it to everything I'd like to but hopefully that will change. Thanks again, I'll keep this thread updated.

Eugh, so much money. I'd be particularly interested in comparing setups for different DJs - for instance, does Steve Aoki do more live mixing than Rusko?

Yea it definitely isn't cheap, especially for higher quality equipment, but the Numark Mixtrack is right around $100 and (from what I've read) is a good place to start for those of us struggling with money.

I really like your idea about comparing setups too but I'm not sure how I could find that out besides actually getting to meet the artists and asking. If I was able to work with a company and could get a press pass that would open up a lot more options and possibilities, but for now I gotta work with what regular people have access to.

My ideal episode would include:
-Intro outside the club/venue
-Quick tour of the club/venue
-A few questions with the artist(s)
-Footage from the set
-Reactions/reviews from people in the crowd
-Summary/closing review from me and/or Pat
