I'm a big proponent of the beater theory.


It's the idea that your first car needs to be an absolute shitbox that cost less than $1000, and you never put more than $50 of real repairs in it. Total. Forces creativity in repairing your car on your own. And paying 2/3 of the cars value for a repair makes no sense anyway.

The reason this theory works is because it teaches you what you need to know about driving without dying at a lower cost. You will inevitably hit something in that audi. (yes, you will. Deny all you want.) And if you don't hit something, good luck driving in a high school parking lot and not getting hit by someone else.

In your audi, you'll be pissed because you're about to flush away a heap of money.

In your saturn or...shitty ford or whatever...you'll be pissed for about as long as it takes to either break the panel piece off, or duct tape it back on.



Save your money. Buy a shitty car, and put no extra money in it. Beat the hell of it, love it, and enjoy every second of it while hating everything about simultaneously. Then, if you've learned anything...your nicer, 2nd car will be unbelievable, and you will be experienced enough to not wreck it on your own, and will want to keep it pristine.

But i could just save up my money and buy a nice reliable car that won't break down and everything will be all good!

And in all honesty, the 2 cheapest cars I've owned were strangely reliable. Especially my first one. We put the damn thing through absolute beatings daily and drove it like hell, and it made it through flawlessly everytime. I probably spent $20 in repairs.

What about like an 02 forester? Would that be a good car?

my buddy bought a geo metro for 500 dollars, then drove it everywhere and did absolutely no maintenance to it, didn't even change the oil. He got 70,000 miles out of it. I mean, this is an extreme example but, ill be damned if he didn't save money.
