Well, I think it's safe to say that well over 50% of the people in the military now joined after 9/11 when war seemed/was a certainty, so I think that first point is not only weak but completely wrong. If you join almost any service, it is well known that you will deploy at some point.
And I disagree on the Afghani leaders padding wallets. What is the value of excessive amounts of cash in Afghanistan? There's one highway in the whole country, made of dirt in most parts. What are you going to buy? A summer home in Pakistan? I don't know, I just don't see eye to eye there simply because I don't see the motivation. I'm sure I'm missing something.
Afghanistan was a nice country before the Soviet invasion and ensuing Taliban rule. Many of the older patriots in that nation want to turn it back into what it once was before their history is gone forever.
