We armed the Mujahideen against the Russians 20 years ago.  This guy is either implying that what we armed them with back then is the only thing they have against us now or we were arming them while fighting them, both of which are complete bullshit.  Overall, what we gave them during the days of the Mujahideen is pretty much completely irrelevant.

I also doubt this, Al Qaeda doesn't strike me as an organization that would buy shoulder missiles at 40 grand a piece. And stingers are the kind of weapon that would be incredibly difficult to get a hold of in any kind of quantity without US officials knowing.

They're the largest terrorist organization in the world.  I also really doubt that if US officials knew, they would be telling the whole public that Al Qaeda has huge missiles capable of killing many US soldiers.

oh, and to add another thought. The US had a buy back program for the stingers that weren't used. They got almost all of them back. Some they didn't, but the amount that would have been left were almost all sold outside Afghanistan apparently. Any that would have been left in the country are so small in number it barely even matters.

doesn't mean they have the money or the ability to buy stingers from a strictly regulated Arizona company which no doubt has the CIA/whoever breathing down their back on every sale they do outside the US government. It would be more likely they have Chinese equivalents.

face it that the US achieved close to nothing and you just ruined your own country with the associated costs. getting out of there is absolutely necessary, as this problem CAN NOT BE solved with weapons.

it was a blind and uncontrolled revenge, conducted by the worlds leading, western, civilized and christian nation to go the afghanistan with idk how many violations of international laws. hundreds of thousands civilians died because 3000 americans died. this is plain and simple wrong.

iraq war was based (just like the vietnam conflict) on fake information and again footed on highly doubtful legal grounds. hussein was a monster, yes, thanks for destroying him though.

the nato-alliance in lybia was a shithole too (although the US didnt play the biggest part i guess).

so, right now, its afghanistan, iraq and lybia, all of them will NOT experience long phases of freedom and peace because the problems behind the obvious problem werent tackled. iraq is an artifical country, before the british occupation, there was never some state with these borders. groups within the inhabitants hate each other to death and this wont work, plain and simple. afghanistan will soon be back to taliban-control with all the corresponding problems (lack of education, raise of fundamentalism,...). in lybia, the scharia will probably be the base for the legal system and its probable that it will become a fundamentally islamic state.

then, there is syria, massacres against civilians without an end, but no intervention there? could it be that syria has too less oil or opium plants?

i hate to think of our world like that, but if you take the facts its kinda obvious that weapon lobbyists, oil lobbyists and drug traffickers control more than you want them to.

Well, I think it's safe to say that well over 50% of the people in the military now joined after 9/11 when war seemed/was a certainty, so I think that first point is not only weak but completely wrong. If you join almost any service, it is well known that you will deploy at some point.

And I disagree on the Afghani leaders padding wallets. What is the value of excessive amounts of cash in Afghanistan? There's one highway in the whole country, made of dirt in most parts. What are you going to buy? A summer home in Pakistan? I don't know, I just don't see eye to eye there simply because I don't see the motivation. I'm sure I'm missing something.

Afghanistan was a nice country before the Soviet invasion and ensuing Taliban rule. Many of the older patriots in that nation want to turn it back into what it once was before their history is gone forever.

Do you still consider them the political leaders of Afghanistan? That's kind of the grey area that has our troops there still, but I see what your stance. That's the trouble with the whole situation.

there has been rumors that we have been paying warlords not to attack the fuel convoys. for the warlords, taliban is bad for business, so we pay the warlords and they keep the taliban away from the convoys for the time needed, then its back to business as usual.

Um where the fuck did I say that. Def not. The "war on terror" is a fucking scam at best. This is a war that we won't "win" The goals aren't well defined, so we'll probably be able to stay fighting in the middle east for a long long time.

We should have never been over there. We should bring our troops home now.

in my history class last year we were talking about pulling american troops out of afghanistan and a girl in my class said "well wouldn't we have to do it secretly because if the taliban knew we were pulling out all of our troops on a certain day they'd attack a day later"

pulling out means gradually decreasing the number of troops, not teleporting every piece of military equipment down to the last bullet casing back to the us. it's inevitable that we will always have troops in iraq, iran, and afghanistan. that's the shitstorm we've created
