Three of my friends and I moved out to Revy for the season. We're here now, settled in our rental. I've constantly been watching the Stoke List and RESC for job posting but have come up shot. We each handed out 15 resumes last week but all got the same general response; its the slow season and they probably won't be hiring for a while. I guess we never thought that we came "to early" to get jobs... any suggestions on work or anyone know of some casual work for us? +K guys thanks!
Iv been in here for 2 weeks now and in the same situation. Just gonna keep looking and lapping the town with resumes. Been told when the snow comes you can easily get some cash for snow clearing. But if anyone does know of work coming up sooner a heads up would be great.
well it's only october. typically in ski towns "they" do their hiring in november and the work force isn't needed until the hill opens up in December when the crowds show up. You came at the right time though, just budget yourself to survive till you find a job and get paid. Having a place already (ie: a local address on the resume) puts you far, far ahead of all those that will show up in november applying for jobs from a hostel or other transient people.
good luck, enjoy the shoulder season, and don't forget to check out your backyard (it's quite big).
yeah, i've done the routine a few times in the past, and while it can get stressful just waiting and hoping, usually it eventually all comes together. I haven't dealt with it in the past few years, but see new faces (and old friends) go through it every fall. It's a bitch - do you have a back up plan?
And when you get to the interview process, don't act/talk like you are a transient ski bum. Give them the idea that you want to make Revelstoke your home if those type of questions arise. I've never tried to live/work in Revy in particular, but the smaller communities (ie - not Banff, Whistler, and Fernie) would rather hire someone who isn't just going to ditch out at the end of the season (or mid season if the weather isn't panning out), even if it's just a seasonal position. Don't just lie out of your ass though, you could always just go the "I'm dirt broke and need this job to survive, I won't let you down" route and hope "they" feel sorry for you.
Yeah I do have a backup plan; owner of Big White is long time family friend, but hoping to stay in Revy for obvious reasons. Some awesome advice there with the whole "dont come across as a seasonal ski bum". Ill definitely taper my interview responses in that sense, thanks man.
good luck bud. I arrived last year in november and everything was full. I finally got a job at the end of February as a lifty part time, and up to that point had handed out countless resumes. Couldn't even get a housekeeping spot with a fucking BSc. Hate to dash your spirits, but you just need to keep trying and eventually it'll work out. hopefully you have cash to tide you over. ps if you are still here we should shred!
Got a job dishwashing at the Rockford Grill up at the resort, should carry me through the season with any luck. Ill take you up on that offer 'skicowboy'. Id be stoked to do a few laps with a fellow newschooler!
