Why is not wearing a helmet so cool?

Why do some pros choose not to wear a helmet even though head injuries are so common? For example lucas magoon had horrible brain trauma after hitting his head and ahmet dadali has fucked up his head on stairs, yet neither choose to wear a helmet after thier accidents.

Yes i understand it may be less comfy or might distract you from riding better, but i really think its stupid for pros to not wear a helmet.

Personally, i rip it up better with a helmet cause im not scared of hitting my head and i will try more shit if i have a bucket on.


Maybe its the same as a high-consequence hand rail.. more dangerous = better shots for movies and magazines??? it kindof sets a bad example for the young generations .

Dunno man, I always had a lot of pressure to wear a helmet, my dad was an ER doctor. Say what you will, but I still feel weird not wearing one doing everything from skiing to biking. Copious amounts of horror stories of horrible injuries from not wearing helmets scared the crap out of 3 year old me, so I just stuck with the habit.

I don't understand why people are fighting over this. What does it matter if somebody wears a helmet or not it is their decision and their brain so why does it affect you. I personally where a helmet but I know people that don't and if that's a risk they are willing to take then that is their choice. Why should you try and force someone to do something that they don't want to do when it is not affecting you?

It sounds to me like you've just been plagued with bad luck your whole life.

Most of us don't need to worry about our parades being perpetually pissed on.  Stop trying to guilt children on the internet into wearing helmets.  Everyone understands their purpose and everyone knows its safer to wear one than not to.  These threads show up all the time and never is there any resolution.  Let people do what they want to do.  Freedom, buddy.

Hell we don't even have a motorcycle helmet law here in New Hampshire.  It's not anyone's job but your own to keep yourself safe.  That's all there is to it.  Live and let live, I don't give a shit about why you think other people should wear helmets.

I don't mind if I see someone doing nasty urbans without helmet, it is their personal choice. But when I am skiing next to concrete and metal, I don't want to hit my head into them.

I don't know about skiing, I guess the snow is kinda of soft and forgiving so someone people don't worry too much about it. I always where one though.
Longboarding though... I'm alright at longboarding, used to wear my helmet about half the time, most of my friends didn't or anything. Anyway I fell on what wasn't even that big of a hill not even going that fast. I was wearing my helmet and I wobbled out directly onto my head. Was wearing a nice Bern helmet (one of the hard hat expensive ones). I still got knocked out for a minute and half and got a really bad concussion. Multiple doctors told me that there was positively no chance I would have survived without the helmet. And I almost didn't wear it that day...
Wear a helmet!! There is no good reason not too, all it takes is one weird fall to mess up your life and the lives of others. Really.

Meh, its personal choice, if you value you life/ability to do things wear one, if your willing to take the risk to not be able to do anything/die then dont.

I've ridden BMX bikes almost my whole childhood, doing stupid ass shit never wearing a helmet.

Skiing wise, I haven't gone a day without one since starting to ride park. Something about going 30mph through trees that are just barely waist width spaced make me feel like it's a good idea to wear one.

I fall so much trying to learn new things. I've gotten better at falling than anything else related to skiing. I can count at least 5 times where a helmet has saved me from a concussion. If I were skiing within my comfort zone, I would never wear one. Thing is, I rarely ski within that zone. Everyday of skiing I'm trying to learn something new or acting like a clown on the hill. It's tough learning new things without falling, and eating it hard. That's why I feel like a helmet is necessary.

So, I didnt wear one up until I broke my femur in 7th grade. That EXACT day was the only day I had ever rented a helmet up unto that point. The doctors told me in the hospital that had I not been wearing one I would have had serious brain damage. Several years later, in 11th grade, I had a massive brain tumor removed. Found out, had I not been wearing a helmet, that impact would have killed me right there and then. I have worn a helmet ever since.

Sounds like you need to ski smarter then lol, not saying you shouldn't wear a helmet.. but really? You rarely ski within your comfort zone? You must ski totally radical to the extreme bro

I agree on that one.

When I learned how to ski 13 years ago, helmets were rearly seen on the mountain.
Also, back in the day, seat-belts weren't mandatory in cars- but they happend to save a lot of lifes so they bacame mandatory.
I personally only started using a helmet regularly 2 years ago, when I realized the shit I do can go terribly wrong+ knowing that ski patrols in europe would take my pass if they see me hitting the park with no helmet on.

I think most of the people out there who don't wear a helmet are just not used to it, and don't do it just for steeze.
I don't think any pro would tell you that a helmet just looks rediculus and that no helmet=steeze.
If you do happen to meet such, a pro or a friend, don't let that person be your "good influence".

WTF? Urban is way more dangerous than cruising the mountain. I don't know about you, but I eat shit at least once every time I hit urban.

I agree, it's important to push outside of your comfort zone to progress.. but I think it's counterproductive if you always skiing beyond your skill level and never practice/improve upon tricks you alrady know.

I wear helmets depending on what i'm doing. When I hit kickers or rails I always wear a helmet, plus it's like wearing a helmet, it's not ugly and it's pretty useful.
But when I ski backcountry or simple slopes I just hate having a helmet.
