This doesn't make sense, it's a contradiction. How can they be completely safe if accidents happen? And if you're accepting a risk then inherently there must be admission that it's not completely safe.
Pros and amateurs have to make up their own minds about the risks they are willing to take and the steps they will take to minimise those risks. However I think it's foolish to claim some people are immune to certain accidents or that particular circumstances preclude head injuries from taking place.
Skiing is a dangerous sport and there are so many variables that can work against you. Personally I think it's sensible to stack the cards in your favour in any way possible and wearing a helmet is one of the easiest ways to do it.
Actually the correlations are pretty clear.
I ride a bike too, and the same comfort factor makes things dangerous. Usually it's someone who has a ton of skill and experience, they get comfortable doing stupid shit- whether it's a cork 9 or a 100mph wheelie- think it can't happen to them and BAM! They're fuckin dead or severely injured. Happens in skiing too, so try not to dwell on the speed aspect of it, as he's really getting at the dangerousness in comfort and confidence with doing something potentially harmful.
It's not fear mongering either. It's genuine concern, at least for me anyways. If you're not wearing a helmet because you think it makes you look like a dork, well then you're a fucking tool to put yourself at risk for how you're percieved by others. You can't make someone wear a helmet, but if you make them realize how retarded it is not to wear one for fashion concerns maybe they will change once you make fun of them for a while, as that seems to be about 80% of it on here. Perception. Not comfort, safety or anything else. A fucking fashion show. That is both hilarious and pathetic imo- also it's pretty much admitting you don't go big and you're just here to look good.
If you think that's fear mongering and condescention, well then I'm sorry you feel that way. Nice jab at the end that people who wear helmets are just looking for someone else to talk down to though. Nice. I hope you realize how dumb that is though. I mean, if you don't want to wear one, don't... But if you think people aren't going to make fun of the notion of it being cool not to wear one, you're on acid. Shit, I think some of the helmets out now look sick and it's another thing you can sticker up so why not rock one?
I can't believe I typed all that in a troll thread.
= "knocking some sense into you" which is what it took for one of my closest ski buddies to get one. Dude was indeed sick but would never rock a helmet because he hated how they looked. He felt differently AFTER he got concussed and had blown out irregular pupils for a few days of horrible nausea and vertigo- thankfully he would end up being alright, but nobody could have ever talked him into one, he had to learn the hard way that it's not a fashion show out there... And like others' stories here illustrate, he got off easy.
I don't want you to get hurt, I want you to wake up. It will only take once I promise you that, so why not save yourself the trouble? New helmets look sick. Head injuries suck. The choice is easy if you actually ski. Who's gonna look out for #1 if you don't?
It's still your choice. Choose wisely. There is no reset button.
Lol... Ok man, like I said it's your call. I was making fun of people because the actual thread title is about not wearing helmets being cool. It's fucking moronic. If you don't want to wear one, fine... But do it for your own reasons, not because it's cool or not. That's the dumbest shit I've ever heard.
I don't give a shit if it's cool or not, I'm wearing one.
Earlier this season I hucked a little backflip off a jump, threw it harder than usual because I thought I was going too slow, actually went way too fast, went round 1.5 times and landed on the back of my head. Got knocked out cold, concussed, night in hospital blah blah. My (now retired) helmet has a crack running most of the way around the inside at the back.
I lost 2 whole days of memories (probably good ones since I was skiing), couldn't ski for a few weeks, and was more or less told that you only get 3 good knocks on the head like that one before you're at serious, serious risk of brain damage if you hit it again.
Something like this scares you. Until now I've always thought I was pretty bulletproof. I'm still getting my confidence back and haven't gone inverted on snow since then (it's been about 3 months). Such a simple little thing all went horribly pear shaped. But the underlying thing here, is what if I hadn't been wearing a helmet?
Brain cells don't grow back. For the sake of a little bit of weight and inconvenience and maybe not being the steeziest steeze-monkey on the hill, I'm gonna take the helmet every damn time.
