Why is not wearing a helmet so cool?

Why do some pros choose not to wear a helmet even though head injuries are so common? For example lucas magoon had horrible brain trauma after hitting his head and ahmet dadali has fucked up his head on stairs, yet neither choose to wear a helmet after thier accidents.

Yes i understand it may be less comfy or might distract you from riding better, but i really think its stupid for pros to not wear a helmet.

Personally, i rip it up better with a helmet cause im not scared of hitting my head and i will try more shit if i have a bucket on.


Maybe its the same as a high-consequence hand rail.. more dangerous = better shots for movies and magazines??? it kindof sets a bad example for the young generations .

haha, they arent telling you to not wear a helmet. you just said they may influence other people to not wear one, yet you rock one all the time. a helmet protects your dome up to speeds of 25 mph and the obvious physical occurances such as scrapes, breaks, etc. some people just cant wear helmets. i myself, personally, grew up having never worn one, and putting one on feels really foreign to me. i learned everything i know without one, and have never gotten a head injury. its just about being safe, not wearing one makes you think. as opposed to having one on a just hucking yourself and thinking everything is fine, your forced to stop and say "wait a minute, am i really ready to try this?" yes, a helmet can prevent serious injuries in situations that you cant control, as in a collision with a gaper among oher variables. but if your confident in what your doing, and know and understand EVERY risk you are taking, it really isnt as bad as people make it out to be. if you wear one, more power to you and keep on keepin on, thats your choice, but some people just cant do it, or choose not to

I agree with the OP. After sustaining a serious injury myself from not wearing a helmet I am now a big proponent for their use. In fact I think some companies should be attempting to make a decent snow oriented full face helmet. And yes, after what happened to me it literally makes me nauseous to see major company sponsored vids showcasing athletes without helmets. Shame on them.

you can't make someone wear a helmet.  Most have seen enough accidents or ski sketchy enough terrain to want one regardless, but some just either feel it inhibits them in some way, hate how they feel or are too gnarbro for shit to happen to them.

I always wear one.  Head injuries are the worst.  You can break your leg and still be you, but whack your head too hard and someone is changing you daipers and feeding you like a toddler for the rest of your life.  Also I've seen someone plow a tree hard enough to split their helmet- they were shaken up but ok-  I guarantee if he didn't have one I would have watched him die right there.  I still think about that all the time, as you never know.

I used to be one of those, stubborn as fuck, non helmet kids. It feels so much more comfortable without a helmet, and that was the only reason i hated em. It felt harder to throw tricks and bulky as fuck.

All i have to say is, having a REALLY serious head injury can change your whole outlook and perspective on everything.

i dont think anyone should be forced, but i think people should do it anyways. youre brain is pretty damn important, might as well protect it. honestly its no different from people who never ski with their phone because they are afraid to break it. i dont think there is anything wrong with it, just trying to protect your valuables.

Wearing a helmet gives me a false sense of safety. I think it's a horrible idea to try new (and potentially dangerous) things just because you wear a helmet. I have hit my head much more often when I do wear a helmet than when I don't. I think that's it's because when I wear a helmet my judgement automatically believes that I should be protected if I hit my head. While when not wearing a helmet I know that I need to keep my head off the ground which can be difficult. I think it's a choice you have to make but it's not something that should be mandatory. Not to mention hitting urban with a helmet looks ridiculous.

Exactly this, it just depends on what I'm skiing that determines helmet or not.  In the backcountry absolutely, hitting some green circles with my girl; not too worried about it.  But yeah, as far as the big names not wearing them on terrain they obviously should be, if it isn't in their contract or a stipulation from a sponsor called a "wellness" clause then it's still America.......for now.

I've had 2 seizures from hitting my head so hard... I hate to think about what would have happened had I not been wearing a helmet.

The only time I don't wear one is when I'm hiking rails in the springtime, because a helmet is too hot for my liking.

ive gotten two concussions while wearing a helmet... it's super nice to not wear it when youre not doing anything crazy but i'd regret it too much if i seriously injured myself cause i didnt want to wear one when i was actually doing something dangerous

But I still wear a helmet. I've gotten plenty of concussions while wearing one. I'd probably be brain dead if I didn't wear one.

granted, im sitting here typing this with five staples in my head from a head injury, so I may be a little biased, but skiing without a helmet is just a stupid decision. one that will bite you in the ass sooner or later.

i wear one all the time when im hitting cliffs, hauling ass through trees, and hitting jumps. not so much on park rails or just cruising on a slushy spring day though.

Honestly it's survival of the fittest. The intelligent folks wear helmets and the total dipshits who would screw up the gene pool don't and will probably not live long enough to procreate anyway....haha.

cruisnig groomers i can understand no helmet but park? and bigmountain/trees? thats just plain silly. all it takes is the slightest under rotation off a 50ft booters and boom catch an edge smack your head, not the right speed off a pillow/cliff, boom smack your head on a tree/rock. buy a helmet that fits and you wont notice it. and wont be killed as easily

Just do whatever you feel like OP. As long as you have a legit skiing helmet (Not some bmx bike helmet or some standard bicycle helmet) then noone gives a shit nowadays. Noone gets beaked for wearing helmets nowadays, not from what I can see.

I tend to agree with this. It shows how much people value their brains and I really appreciate having one that works as it should so I wear a helmet. I think having a carer wiping your ass for you would be more of a concern than worrying about what you look like wearing a helmet on urban or whatever.

the fact of the matter is, if you consider yourself a professional, just like in every other non motorized action sport, it is whack to wear a helmet, specifically when hitting urban.

Obviously, head injuries are serious and nothing to fuck around with, but look in any snowboarding, skateboarding, or even rollerblading publication/movie, and you wont see any helmets (with a few exceptions, obviously).

Actually, skiing is the only non motorized action sport I can think of where using a helmet while hitting urban isn't looked down upon, and is for the most part, universally accepted. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, or that you, 12 year old fuck who is reading this, should not wear a helmet. I'm just saying that's how it is.

It gets to the point where if you are hitting gnarly enough urban, and you consider yourself a professional, and you are fully aware of the risks involved, not wearing a helmet isn't really that big of a leap of faith. You guys can talk about "survival of the fittest" all you want, but that's totally irrelevant; the ones hitting gnarly urban without helmets (hornbeck, ahmet, et. all) ARE the "fittest".

More than anything else though, it's because you touch yourself at night, as I previously stated.

im agreeing with you so much. also, in every single helmet thread you get a laundry list of "if i wasnt wearing a helmet i would be dead!" ive never worn a helmet, and im still alive. i have never even hit my head actually. chances are helmets do a lot less than you think.

it's not... Mine is really comfortable, doesn't get in the way, and plays music. Plus I'm way more confident with it on. I wouldn't hit a rail without it... Not cuz I'm a pussy just cuz I don't want to be braindead by the time in 35
