So apperently I got a 98% on my PSAT

the headmaster at my school told y friend who was my old dorm proctor that i got a 98 percent on my psat and was tops in the school. WTF. will this help me at all or does the psat not mean shit?

It will get you a bunch of letters from schools... I have a giant fucking box full. But realistically, it does nothing to advance your position in life.. keep working hard in school/doing extra curricular activities and volunteer work, as well as educational summer programs if you want to go to a good university.

Guarantee he means percentile... The only thing it means is that you'll probably do well on the SAT, given that they are pretty much identical.

Pre Scholastic Assessment Test

Since you scored really well you will know that PRE means before....
Which means the test before the test.

Furthermore the PSAT only allows the highest grade of 80%

yep sorry OP, means percentile. at my school (small private school), 98th percentile was pretty common, that was where i was at as well.

as people have said, it means you will get a bunch of shit from schools and you will probably do pretty well on the SAT. aside from that, pretty much has no impact

this, everyone saying you get nothing is wrong. when you get your results back it will tell you if you qualify for a national merit scholarship, which you can receive if you end up doing very well on the sat in addition to having good grades. i qualified and kicked ass on the sat, but my grades weren't anywhere near high enough for me to actually be competitive the scholarship.

even qualifying for national merit is pretty dope, as people said above prepare to get fucking bombarded with letters from about a million schools you probably don't want to attend -- i'm pretty sure my parents still get postcards from some jewish university. not only am i not jewish, i took the sat two years ago.

My brother made scored 236 on his PSAT and reached the finals of the National Merit Scholarship Program and was given $4000 for college.

So yes, if you want to try hard to make it as a finalist, then you will be rewarded for your efforts.

at my prestigious Private Episcopalian Preparatory School, we had like 10% of kids get the Merit Scholarship.

To get a national merit scholarship, you have to be in the 99.5 percentile. My friend was even within that small half of a percent yet still did not manage to get the scholarship. I think its almost impossible to get...

In a way this is correct. The application for the NMS is the PSAT, so if you score in that 99th percentile you are accepted. But from then on you submit a series of essays/applications to get a spot as a finalist, and ultimately for the scholarship which is awarded to you your senior year.

I was 98 percentile too, it doesn't count for much other than you get on some top school's radar. I qualified for National Merit Scholarships but missed the deadline for the essays.

Yeah actually the PSAT does matter because you can get a lot of scholarship oppostunities from high PSAT grades.

No, a majority of the people say it doesnt matter because they dont do well enough, if you do well enough you have the potential of being a national merit scholar which will get you scholarship money.
p.s. i did not do close to this well, haha

Well the PSAT covers the same basic material, so if someone can ace it as a junior, then they can be a national merit scholar.

honestly, i got a 181 on the psat, and i got a 1800 on the sat

but i took the ACT and did MUCH better on that(30) so thank god i didn't have to take another one of those god awful tests after the spring of this year

At my school they give us NMS kids 100% tuition, 100% room and board, free study abroad, a lap top, $10,000 over 4 years for books/lab fees/ect. and $300 a semester for food

So your headmaster must be Dumbledore or some shit because they grade them literally under lock and key and the grading process has not started yet. There is no possible way he would have acsess to your scores.
