You can't compare the two. It's better to have an early dump, followed by a cold high pressure phase, which conserves the snow, than to have no snow to conserve to start with.
Again, the function of base layers of snow is often underrated. We need much snow within the next two to three weeks - otherwise even large dumps later in winter will - if followed by a few warm days, not endure/survive. This is, btw., the reason why many ski resorts are currently covering their slopes with machine snow, even if they don't want to open within the next week. They want to provide a base layer to stop the (still quite warm) ground from melting the real snow once it's coming.
