yeah that's what they go for with the kit lens but don't get the kit. Body only goes for 500 (refurb) to 650 or so. You can get much better lenses than the kit for relatively cheap.
I bought a t2i a month or so ago from bh for 580 body only. I knew what i was getting myself into when i bought it. But you get addicted to buying parts and lenses and always need more! Ive spent well over a grand and haven't even spent the money im planning for an 11-16. I wish i could have seen that fx-1 before i bought mine just sheer cost wise. Absolutely love my t2i tho, just make sure you know all the costs.
I've spent well over $2,500 on my 60d setup and it's nowhere near complete... DSLRS will be relatively expensive in the long run. Expect to spend ~$3,000.
18-55 kit isn't as bad as people make it out to be. If you're going to be doing a lot of travel vids look into a 18-200, covers a very large zoom range and isn't too big, it's a great do it all lens however the quality isn't excellent (not bad at all though). A 50mm 1.8 is a great choice too, and cheap at around $120 new. The T2i sounds like a great choice for you, if you can afford a 60d it's worth the $200 extra easily imo.
It's going to very different than the hv30, and take a lot more effort/money to get good shots, if you're willing to take the time to learn, and make the investment, it could be good.
If your looking for something easier, it might be better to not got the route of the hddslr
