Buying movies on NS instead of itunes.

So what if NS had a page in the NS store where people could buy and download digital copies of movies, so instead of people buying them off itunes they buy them from ns and then instead of itunes taking 30% or whatever, ns could take a percentage and they would benefit instead of apple.

Obviously deals would have to be made with film companies but it would be keeping the business within the industry. The internets version of "buying local"

This would be sick! I think its a solid idea,...i never buy anything from NS store. just never have... but i would deff get my movies from here, plus supporting more skiing less apple.

They used to have movies available for digital download, that was when the store still functioned.

and make it available to put on a DVD!!!!!

one of the biggest uses om my ski moves is to watch them on long drives!! and i dont have a laptop.

this is a good idea... but on another note why don't companies just have their movies available for download on their site. Does it cost money to do this. I know PBP and MSP do this. No itunes/apples fees right?

They used to do it for abit then it just stoped and then the NS store blew up.

not enough to offset the profits NS would make. the bandwidth used by the video and picture section is more than it would take to serve out a 500mb file every once in a while.

But like someone said, without some means of copyright control the ski companies would probably lose a lot of money.

This is something we tried out last season and while it worked quite well, it didn't have quite the response we hoped. We'd need to really have several companies on board to make this worthwhile. Its not dead, its just on hold for a bit

No see that is the worst way to do it. The music industry is a perfect example of massive amounts of fail on this.

The best way is just pick a format that everyone uses... like .h264. Then when you buy it, you just get a download link. You download the file and its yours to do whatever you want with.

As Chris said, we actually have this system in place right now... we just didn't have very many companies who were interested in taking part.

Most people are afraid of DRM-free stuff, and prefer to share their money with Apple.

If you ask me, everyone will realize the error in this eventually (just like the music industry) and we will sit back and say "I told you so." ;)

haha word. also i've never noticed movies were available for purchase and I go on NS a fair bit...maybe there wasnt much response because the word didnt get out much?

We didn't have all that big of a library TBH, so we hyped it but the response wasn't crazy.

If we had a huge army of producers who were dying to do this, we'd look at re-doing the system, but until we have a better response, its not worth the time.

Have you considered a streaming alternative as opposed to just downloads? That seems to be the direction the music industry is going now. On the one hand the media companies like it because the user doesn't actually get a physical file (unless they screen cap which 99% of users can't/won't do). Would the cost of bandwidth be prohibitive?

It would be neat to see you do something like an "NS Movie Pass" where for a small fee you can stream any movie in your online collection (similar to the netflix model I suppose). Would also be neat if there was an option to watch with a group of people at the same time, and have a live chat going etc during the movie. My 2 cents.

Basically exactly what we're working towards with NSTV. Though personally, I think an ad supported model (a la spotify) is the tits. Free shit, just watch a few ads. Done deal.

So you movie producers out there looking for a new way to make money... gimmie a call.

You people out there who want to watch lots of good free ski content... just do your best to try and deal with a few ads.

I really fucking need to write this whole thing up and just let everyone know what we're doing. I just never can find the time because I keep getting obsessed with these forum threads. :)

Do you think that movie producers would make enough money off a Spotify type model to be interested? If you look at how much artists make off of Spotify it is brutal (they need over 4 million plays per month in order to make minimum wage). I guess taking a hit like that isn't a big deal for a big record label, but for a small indie movie company I wonder how do-able it is.
