NS: What career interests you?

I'm currently studying economics, but I'm still unsure what career I want to obtain.
The reason I decided to pursue economics is because I'm interested in how the world operates and it seems like a pretty versatile degree.

Not knowing what you want to do in the future sure is frustrating, but I'm sure there's loads of you folks in the same boat.

Now I ask NS; what career interests you and how do you plan on reaching your goals?

bull pen catcher really was a solid choice.
Just got my first job out of school, degree was architectural engineering with an emphasis in construction management. I think its sick because I learned about each trade(Mechanical engineering, Electrical, Structural, etc) and am responsible for helping to manage the design and cost of construction projects for the owner. I don't end up having to do any number crunching though which is kinda nice.

curiously, do you have your EIT? sounds like you essentially just got a Const. MGMT major with a mini minor in engineering.

Ya, i took the FE in May and passed. I would say that my career is definitely more construction management based, but my degree was absolutely engineering. I had to take all of the engineering Gen Ed's like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, all of the physics classes, Calc1-3, Diff EQ, etc. Once I got to declare my emphasis in my major though I went with the more construction based side because I ultimately didn't want to be an engineer. So what I do now is pre-construction work for a company who specializes in design build, and I assist the design based on my engineering knowledge from a cost perspective. I don't know if that makes complete sense of how the two are related, but i love it so far.

landscape architecture!
expected employment growth way above average in the coming years. salaries from 40-100k, median at 60k. awesome work designing outdoor spaces that matter. plus, you learn a wide range of topics from design to horticulture to ecological restoration to land use planning to sustainable building/infrastructure and lots of other stuff so the degree is pretty versatile. not as high paying as engineering, but way more potential for doing really creative and fun stuff in anywhere from people's backyards to campus plazas to large-scale city parks to full-scale housing developments to entire towns even. really interesting stuff going on in the field right now too.
couldn't really see myself anywhere else besides related fields. sadly, though, it's still got some of the arrogant 'ivory tower' attitude as most of the design fields do, but that's easy to avoid

I am currently dealing with the landscape architects at AECOM, and they are making my life a living hell. There designs lack any kind of logic or reasoning, and they constantly alter the designs, even after their "deadlines". those fuckers cannot make up thier god damn minds!!! Fucking Architects and handicap people are the bane of my existence.


But really though, Engineers are the like the preschool teachers, and the architects are the preschoolers. The architects get to draw, and be creative, and make a mess, and engineers have to clean up the mess, tell the architects why what they did was bad, and generally deal with the retarded designs that are given them, smile, say "good job jimmy" and then find a way to make it work.

Please stop the propagation of this perceived dichotomy...

Any GOOD architect or engineer has long shed that narrow-minded stance for a more holistic one.

I major in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I'm kind of tossing a few things around right now. I might go to grad school and hopefully get my PhD and do research, or get my teaching certification and teach high school bio, or work for a state park (something along those lines). The time for me to decide is quickly dwindling.

I'm studying Environmental Policy right now and doing a research project on ski area sustainability which is what I eventually want to go into after school. Soo stoked that my Prof. is gonna put me in touch with the people in charge of Sugarbush and Mad River.

Actually, i'm thinking That, i'd like to be surgeon, and then after the "career obsession" phase, i'll go to grad school and become an industrial engineer for a hospital. Being able to use prior knowledge as a former surgeon, I'd actually be able to help.

nah its the contractors who fuck up the actual building of it, and the inspectors who let the shoddy work get done. Engineers engineer it to a specific specification.


you know that minneapolis bridge collapse? ya, that was the contractors fault for using a gusset plate smaller than what was called for in the specs.


Engineers are flawless specimens of ingenuity, wisdom, and overall greatness. FACT.

a couple examples from personal experience. to sum them up very briefly.

-structure I was working on at aviation museum. engineer designed. fabricated exactly to specs. engineer approved before assembly. assembled exactly to engineer specs. main builder of structure is incredibly skilled and experienced with materials being used, told they dude right away it wasn't going to work. "no no, it'll be fine. we've worked this all out". fucking collapses about 10 minutes after it's assembled.

-museum of nature in ottawa. old stone building. built on leda clay. Built to same standards as parliament buildings, the guys who built it knew exactly what they were doing. engineering doesn't get much better than them. 100 years later some know it all engineers decides "nope! they had no idea what they were doing back then, the building isn't safe". frankly that's an insult to truely skilled workmanship. they decide they better put a metal structure in the inside of the building to re-enforce it. despite being blatantly told it's a bad idea geologically, they ignore all warnings. reason it's a terrible idea, when leda clay is subject to an earthquake it causes metal structures to have a fairly long wavelength. the stone structures don't react nearly as much. unfortunately the metal structure is inside the stone structure, so if there's a large enough earthquake the metal structure is going to move a lot more and knock down a stone structure that wouldn't fall down in the first place. they completely ignored this when it was brought up by several geologists.
