if you're taking a trip up to Northern VT, Stowe, MRG, Jay and plenty of other mountains are in a pretty close vicinity

truth.  Jay has the average, it's just a powderwhore shitshow and it gets tracked out relatively quickly despite its size.  That said, locals know whats good and ski freshies for days. 

I ski Magic specifically because on a pow day, there's like 40 people there if its a midweek dump.  Even on the busiest days though if you are familiar with the hill, it's obvious where the freshies are still good even days after a storm.  It's like a mini MRG or Jay, but 3+ hours less of a drive.  That and Magic is known for being 10% groomed on a pow day, which is nice.  Knowing all the hidden sit helps too.     

Best hills on a pow day though...  Got to be Jay, MRG, Magic, and I'll probably get shit for this but the Middlubury motherfucking Snow Bowl is the best $20 ($10 with maplefields voucher) you will ever spend for a mountain all to yourself on a 30'' day like myself and a few friends enjoyed last year.  Total country club and nobody skis trees there AT ALL.  Basically for me it either has to be the biggest and best (a la MRG and Jay) or fkn empty with steep tree shots hidden everywhere (a la MSB and Magic) 

God I love skiing trees.  Fuck it needs to start snowing and never stop.

Fuck forgot to give Smuggs and Stowe props, which is unacceptable.  If you have BC gear, it's fkn amazing up there.  Also, hard to beat the only triple diamond on the EC on a big day.  Mandatory air with an audience!  HEY-OH!

having the pass closed is possibly the greatest thing ever.  So many great chutes, aprons and general gnar up there...  It's like having sea world sandwiched between six flags and disneyland.

I wanted to say inb4 Jay Peak, but, yeah...

In all honesty the amount of power doesn't depend as much on which area you go to as much as it does on if you know where to go once you're there. While Jay does statistically get a higher average annual snow fall, it also gets skied off faster because it has a higher percent of its terrain marked and easily accessible. Your best bet for skiing powder would be to get to know one area inside and out so when that killer storm hits, you can be skiing freshies a week or two afterwards in secret stashes. I ski Mad River and Bolton Valley about equally, but have skied much more powder at Bolton just by knowing about the places other people don't know about.
Remember, small amounts of snow, sometimes an inch or two overnight that only the mountains get (often this is lake effect in vermont, but it happens other places as well, idk, I'm not a meteorologist) isn't usually forecasted but can add up over a week and makes for some surprisingly nice conditions.
Pro tips:
-Go up midweek
-scout off-trail lines when the conditions suck so you can be ready for the good snow
-own a car that handles well in the snow
-You can ski in trees even if they look too thick, just turn really fast

yup.  It's why hole in the wall resorts are a pow skiers best friend. 

Also loving tree skiing helps.  When the wind blows a trail clean, it just means there's double the pow in the trees somewhere, so learn your hill and reap the rewards.
