Exciting news, and wow that looks a lot like the Duke! I'm glad that Marker is gonna have some competition, hopefully it will drive the price down a bit a force marker to keep making improvements to the duke. Interesting to hear about being able to switch between tour and ski mode w/o taking it off, personally I don't really see the necessity for this, I like to take my skis off anyways to take off my skins.

i don't have a touring setup, so take this for whatever you think it's worth, but...

they're supposedly stronger than dukes. they're confirmed to be lighter than dukes, with a lower stand height. you don't have to step out of them to switch from tour to ski mode. this binding is not a competitor to something like a dynafit setup that's meant to be super light and aimed at longer tours. it's a direct competitor to the duke, and based on stats and everything i've read, it crushes it. sure, they might cannibalize a dynafit/fritschi/naxo sales, but they're gonna take a giant bite out of the duke's sidecountry/slackcountry market for people who still want a really solid downhill binding and are willing to sacrifice a little bit of weight to get that.

Yeah, Dynafits are lighter, more efficient, etc. But I would NEVER even consider hitting a decent size jump or cliff with them.

For people who do some side country and shorter tours, and want a burlier binding the Duke or this new Salomon binding could be the answer.

I still say fuck it and just use Trekkers, or maybe those new MFDs.

Trekkers = day rekkers, Dynafit boots are flimsy and dont fit my feet what so ever and super $$. ill get a lighter setup when im old, mean wile i like a beefy setup that i and can huck, trust it will release if need be, when im out in the BC. because being on a Dukes Duck taped together deep in the BC sucks.

Well, it can't have a Driver toe because then it wouldn't be able to fully pivot at the toe, so it needed a shape conducive to housing a horizontal spring.

Let's get a few things striaght... Atomic is also using this same binder with their own graphics. It's called the Atomic Tracker 16.

There is also really cool development coming from Lars and co at Green Mountain Freeride. There are making a sort of toe swap plate so you can get up with a dyna-type tech toe and then revert to your standard alpine binding for the down...

I'm just glad that bigger names are getting into the game and that some of our own brethern continue to push the bounds. This is coming from an agressive AT skier of 8 seasons. Last year I had 3 pairs of dukes spread across most of my quiver. Stoked for better gear year after year.

What about landing switch? That would add a ton of stress to the binding if it only secures in the heel.

On TGR I believe Cody Townsend reacted a lot on questions about this binding.. Summary of what I've read;
The Salomon binding is just a bit lighter than a Duke,but its mostly better because its stronger and the stance is lower..also he landed a lot switch and dropped very big cliffs with no problems..
Other things to look at; only one climbing stance (how do you call that?) , ski-tour mode can be switched while youre in the bindings..
So there is deff some improvements over a Duke, but to me the price should be in the same range..

is the salomon website implying that you would climb up and ski down with your skins on? I don't see any other reason to not have to take your skis off when switching from hiking to riding. really have no idea about this...

I think the purpose of being able to switch from hiking to riding without taking your skis off is for a situation where your skinning up and you have a short section you need to ski down in order to continue on your way.  Instead of having to take your skis off to switch to ski mode or try skiing down in tour mode, you can switch to ski mode.  Not a game changing feature but I can see it being useful.

This looks to be a hell of a better solution then the duke. The toe is still locked with regards to position (it can rotate, but not move fore/aft) the heel on the salomon has a metal connection keeping it from sliding backwards (those four hooks) the duke on the other hand only has the cam switch in the walk feature to keep it from sliding backwards.

Seriously? Dynafits are far more durable than Dukes. I'm scared to hit anything in Dukes because I'm afraid I'll snap them in half (for the Nth time) whereas Dynafits are rock solid. You don't have to worry about pre-releasing or snapping the binding, whereas with Markers, both happen frequently.

these bindings are for those of us who arent serious enough about touring (or can't afford) to have more than one setup but still want to do everything.

In case you don't know, and If you are using Hoji as a refernce, then you don't.

He ski's his Dynafit's with the toe in tour mode. He's not going to pre-release, becuae he's not going to release AT ALL.

I would bet the percentage of the population willing to do that is very small.

Yet there are people who are over 6' tall around 200lbs and skiing 12-DIN Dynafits without prereleasing or breaking them. And this is when they aren't in "lock-down" mode. Hmm...

I think it should go without saying that Dynafits are better bindings than any of these weird hybrid ones. They are made with meal and have less parts. But then again, a Dynafit setup runs around $900, whereas Dukes are less than half that. You get what you pay for.

Depends on the skiing. Lets not pretend there isn't a market for this.

You also need to keep in mind that not everyone wants a setup exclusively for touring, they might want to actually ski the resort.

I'm not denying there's a huge market for this. I'm just saying people need to stop claiming that Dynafits only work well going up the hill rather than down. Truth is, Dynafits are some of the burliest bindings out there, next to FKS and 916s. It's nice having bindings that don't perpetually have you guessing whether or not they'll snap in half when hitting features that aren't even that big.

Dukes and the like have their place, but there's also a large group of people who can't use plastic bindings (16-din is pointless on a plastic bindings because the plastic is more likely to break than you are to release at the higher settings). In the slackcountry they're convenient but up in Alaska there's no way I'd drop into most of these lines with something so unreliable attaching me to my skis.

Does anyone know the price point on these?



I'm very interested in them, as an alternative to STH 16s + trekkers (which I have, but haven't used). To be used on New Lifes (I'd hope they have fat brakes, it looks like a regular Salomon heel, attached to an AT plate)

It looks like a mostly metal structure.
I only skimmed through some of posts, since you guys veered off into talking about Dynafits. Along with me being on mobile for most of the day.

Suprisingly, I'm not a complete idiot and I do realize that Hoji locks out his toes.
However, seeing as I was referring to this from more of a durability standpoint, your argument is invalid.

You definately have a point though. For those of us who truly need a 16 din binding then dynafit is no good. Just beware that unless you weigh 300lbs, a binding cranked up to 16 is just as likely to blow your knee as a locked down toepiece...

actually most people that tour quite a bit can take skins on/off without taking their skis off. it make everything much quicker, and for people that tour a lot will be something of a game changer.

i would look at other options. i toured with sth 16 + trekkers all of last season, and now i hate them. i was doing a lot of 8+hour tour days on them, and i learned just how heavy they are. but it's not the weight that makes them suck so bad, it's a combination of how high off the ski you are, how fragile they are, and how long it takes to switch from ski to tour mode. i went with this option because i wasn't going to sacrifice on the way down. this season i'm going to be on the green mountain freeride mentioned earlier in the thread. if you want to wait a season the solly seems like and awesome binding.

I've presonally put in over 150 days on my 189 hellbents with dukes, Heavy setup buti wouldnt have it any other way, skinning with tail rocker is no big deal, and i like to land switch in my AT bindings...sounds like you dont leave the resort much...

Stoked to try a pair of these! I have a major love hate with dukes so maybe this is the answer?

Back on track, these bindings look like they've taken the successful parts of the naxo's and dukes (bomber metal bars underfoot and toepiece respectively) and combined them, and then added what looks like a tried and true solly heelpiece.
If they're decently priced, should be a killer option for most sidecountry tours.

Looks the same to me.

Toe piece looks solid, probably not as bomber as the STH 16 peice, but it has to be up there.

Very close to the duke is what I've heard.
It seems like its been designed to kill the duke's sales. Slightly lighter, slightly cheaper, slight improvement on all aspects of design. Clever move by salomon. I never really considered dukes, because I knew I would break them forgetting I had them on and hucking to switch. These however, are very tempting!

Living and working in Europe, I am not sure about the exact price of the bindings in the USA. BUT they will be in the same vein as Duke and both (Salomon & Atomic) will have the same exact price.

Are their any difference's at all between the Salomon and Atomic bindings other then their color way?

Also, if a true solly heel is to be used then is atomic going to use a true solly heel as well?

Anyone know what the din is to be? I'm guessing 16?
