Macbook pro hard drive crash

title says it all..... took it to bestbuy and they charged me 70 for diagnostics (which sucks) and found out my hard drive crashed.... they want another like 250 to fix it, i say fuck that.... anyone know of any legitimate ways to get a new hard drive and have it installed for cheaper? im not covered by my warranty anymore, but yeah any help would be greatly greatly appreciated.... no macbook makes me a sad panda

exact same thing happened to me (2008 model). only had 1 yr warranty, called some places to have my data retrieved and a new one installed, it would have been like $700-$1100 to have that done.


i took it to geek squad at best buy, for $180 or so i got all my data retrieved (excluding my applications) and i bought a 1TB external.

im surprised yours will cost you $250 but i think that is the cheapest way...

ehhh i dont know the total cost but he was throwing out all sorts of numbers.... but thank you for the advice.... i figured best buy would be the best way to go about it but wasnt sure if there were some private mac book repair guys out there that hook that shit up

problem 1: you didn't diagnose your own problem, OSX can do this natively off the install disk
problem 2: you went to best buy, they lie about so much shit and jack up prices because they assume you are retarded

buy a new 2.5" drive(HDD or ssd), install it your self(takes all of 30 min)
buy 2.5" drive inclosure, put old drive in it, run a disk repair utility, copy data to new drive

i thought the intial problem was the macbook failing to chose which operating system to use, i was unaware you could self diagnose this way... my fault for taking the expensive approach. so forgive me for my lack of knowledge on computer mechanics, but it is as simple as buying a new drive, installing it, and turning on the mac? does the mac automatically recognize whats going on there? and before i search any good tutorials you could recommend to me on the entire process?

indeed it would, OWC is a very legit company, and they have video tutorials for how to swap the drive out of the machine
