does this piss off anyone else? At my school there was a protest today at 9 am waking everyone up. These people have no idea what they even are protesting. So annoying. Its literally just a big party for all the hipsters and people who don't contribute to society and are jelous of everyone who actually work hard and make money

Not at this point, no. But you've got to start somewhere. Behind all the bullshit, theres bound to be people who can actually make a difference.

I do want to stab my eyes out when I see peeps bitching about jobs and filming protests with their iPads though.

I wanted to stay out of this thread as long as I could, but holy shit.

This post, and the police actions that it references, are purely revolting. Students, sitting in a quad protesting a worthy and unoffensive cause? Seems like a normal university campus occurance to me. Less offensive than the anti-abortion protest that was showing off aborted fetuses at my quad this week.
Pepper spray was ridiculously unnecessary. The cop probably felt threatened by the strong will of the students, and in a weak-minded state he tried to get back at those that he knew wouldn't physically fight back. People like that probably shouldn't be out in public, never mind on a police force keeping people "safe".

I still can't wrap my head around why some people are so against the protest for little annoyances to their unsustainable daily routine. These are people who actually have the balls to stand up for the people and publicly discuss global injustices that have previously been swept under the carpet as fast as possible. What social values have taught you to hate that?

Oh yeah, they're hippies, so they make no sense and nothing they talk about applies to my life or the future of my children. Just pepper spray them so they shut up. That way I don't need to think about it. /rant fueled by stress of finals

please do a little research before making comments like that. This was students protesting at UC Davis for an 8% tuition increase. Pepper spray was not justified.

if you don't protest an 8% tuition increase then the administration will think all the students are okay with it and jack up the price another 8 next year. protesting can be amount making a change, but protesting can be about showing you aren't indifferent, so next time the administrators want to raise tuition they will know it will be met with protest again.

haha i know, it would be hilarious to see them try. but my god its getting pathetic, its like every protest we see in america is just a bunch of pussies whining and taking a beating from cops. sure they are passionate enough to sit around and bitch, but nobody is willing to do shit about it. and even worse, when someone has an extremely good reason for fighting back, they dont, they just take it. gives me the impression they dont care enough to risk anything for it.

not trying to condone violence.. but shit, when the people in a lot of other parts of the world protest the government or whoever, they dont half ass it. i atleast want to see a couple bricks being thrown when cops start throwing down..

That's right, eat, sleep, live, and breathe hierarchy. it's the only thing that works. We know that it works because it's "natural".
Mutualism, collectivism, and community are ineffective and antiquated by regime style governing, even if on a small scale. "I am your leader, I speak for all" further reinforces this weird idea that representative democracy is somehow effective.

I think the core group of people who've organized this are way ahead of their time. A large percentage of their following is nowhere near their level. Eventually things will topple, but definitely not now. Because they're able to use the media to control, they'll be able to milk at least another couple decades, maybe more.
Revolution need not be on a mass scale, though, that's what these guys fail to see. There is an underlying form behind oppressive government that has a lot of names, I call it anarchy. I am an anarchist; once you realize that free will is totally and utterly yours, you are as well. Coercion, physical, mental, monetary, is all fabricated, and to step outside of it is to be free, it's that simple. Now, that's a personal revolution, but when a large segment of the population makes this realization and acts on it (thinking for themselves, and not simply following), you have massive change, breakdown of social norms and governmental function, and people begin working together. That can only be done through education on a scale equally massive. Protesting is basically mob-style reformism. To protest with these guys is to imply that the system as it stands is workable with amendments and changes. It's not. That's why I don't agree with what they're doing.
I've talked with a few of the actual organizers about a month in, and they began to realize that, that's why they started doing teach-ins. Everyone's agenda blurred up because people weren't educated, and because people refused to work together. It's not something we can tackle in a couple months, we'll need years. But people have a need for instant gratification, so support will be lost.

Im not saying they dont deserve to be hit, pepper sprayed etc.. if they are breaking a law, are told to stop, and dont, then no shit you are gonna get pepper sprayed, and at that point, dont scream police brutality.. either take it, or do something about it and hit them back.. if you dont agree with it, then show it.

now if they arent breaking a law, and the police are telling them to do something that they dont have to do. and they get pepper sprayed, that qualifies as police brutality IMO, and they should fight back.

what do you mean you haven't seen anything they're doing helping? they've done more to raise awareness of what's going on and have spread the movement globally more anything we've seen in decades.


what better chance would there be if we resorted to violence? violence would only beget more violence. riots breaking out would lead to martial law, which would lead to even more problems, death, and human rights violations, all while not achieving anything positive to show.

im gonna have to disagree. I actually agree with the occupy movement in a lot of ways, personally i think they need to be occupying DC, but whatever. I just feel like the whole movement makes all the occupiers and supporters of the movement look bad. you see far more idiots, stupid opinions, and shitty people, than you see the people who know what they are talking about and have the right idea. and the media is only going to make that worse.. even the hardcore liberal kids at my school seem to dislike the movement for the most part. I think people see the type of people protesting, and loose respect for the movement, so they dont take it seriously.

now im not trying to condone violence, yes if all those hippies somehow managed to hurt a cop. it would probably hurt the movement more than anything. But what i am saying is to make an actual, real change. violence or force can be very necessary, there is no denying that it can be extremely effective. you at least need some kind of action, not just talking..

Now i dont necessarily think violence would be necessary at this point. more action is what they need, less bitching more doing. doesnt have to be violent. now if it comes to that so be it. maybe this is where our opinions differ, but there are some cases where violence is needed to accomplish something. especially if you are dealing with someone that is not willing to listen in any other way. history shows this countless times.

i guess i cant really talk, but i went to the occupy denver protest, definitely not as big as wall street, but it still seemed like a big mess of differing opinions, and stupidity, with the occasional guy with common sense standing out. ive got friends in NYC and they say its pretty much the same.
again, im for the movement for the most part, i just think it needs to be more organized, send a clearer message, and have a better image to be effective. that and they need to ACT and DO SOMETHING about it. talking will only get them so far.
i feel like if some big corporation on wall street said "ok occupiers, tell us what you want and we will do it" and they tried to meet the overall demand of the occupiers, that the corporation would be done within a week.

and i dont think these people will use any means to stop it. to me they havent shown any commitment to doing anything about it. sure they can go chill in a park and complain, but i feel like when it takes some actual effort, hard work, risk, and dedication to the cause, 99% of the 99% would not be willing to do any of that.
