does this piss off anyone else? At my school there was a protest today at 9 am waking everyone up. These people have no idea what they even are protesting. So annoying. Its literally just a big party for all the hipsters and people who don't contribute to society and are jelous of everyone who actually work hard and make money

flame away, but the 1% should be taxed more in a situation like this (faltering economy and government close to default). Everyone has to make sacrifices.

And that argument about "gargle gargle they worked hard for where to get to where they are now" is bullshit. Half of those people were born into what they have now. Inheritance tax ftw. make those people actually WORK, not "work"

3 examples off the top of my head:
-Monsanto-Monopoly on seed industry, forcing people to buy their seeds every year.
-Goldman Sachs-The CEOs made record profits off of the bailout money.
-Bank of America and General Electric (along with many, many other large corporations) frequently do not pay federal taxes because of corporate loopholes. Both B of A and GE did not pay taxes last year, while BofA made over 4billion in profits alone.


There are MANY more examples, but I don't care to spend to energy looking that up right now while on my study break.

Inheritance tax for the win? The inheritance tax (really the estate tax) is 50% on assets over $5M handed down to someone. Thats federal alone. Add on high state estate taxes and sometimes there is literally nothing left. The tax is so high that it becomes a burden on the people that the estate has been gifted to. I did estate taxes when I worked in public accounting. Regardless I dont know what this has to do at all with someone being a banker.
Again how do you get born into a banking job?

I was making current examples. If you want to say Enron, I'll throw in Tyco (the medical supply company) too since they bought my grandfathers company (US Surgical) and fucked him over right before getting caught for the same thing Enron did right around the same time period and almost on as big of a scale as Enrons.

Want something done? Don't protest. Force your local congressman to take action. Don't just vote for them and then trust they will do everything you want. They need your local populaces VOTES and people do not use these congressmen as a tool for change at all. This country would be so much better(and it's already great!) if they utilized this. That's my two cents.

Ivy League just means they got lucky enough to be put on the bill, and know how to articulate something in writing (or at least put it off like they do) in order to get accepted. Or their parents had money/power.

I'd take a run-of-the-mill basic university student over a big-name university student any day when it comes to this sort of shit. Especially seeing as they're just being taught shit from retarded grad students while the professor is out doing 'research'.

These kids are just dumb as the tea party fuckers.

I was in burnside park in Providence where 300 people are camped. My father works on 5th avenue and Wall street in NYC and thus I tend to have a biased view to begin with. I confronted about 10 people and asked why they were there and what they thought about the situation. 9 out of the 10 people could not give me an answer that made any sense. 3 people told me "because my friends are here" 2 people told me that "99% of america have trouble paying their bills" (this is not true at all, and not a correct statistic" One intelligent person told me he disagreed with the economic structure and hated the corporate greed. (good answer)

These people are clowns...

I'm writing a paper on people like the 9/10 bandwagoners you talked to and how they ruin the movement. Handed in my draft and when I got it back, I saw that it was marked by my very communist-looking TA from last semester, and he basically failed me saying that I can't discard the majority of the protesters. Definitely hit a sore spot...

But though it's not very well organized, it has everyone talking and discussing things that would never be brought up normally. You talked to a bunch of people, possibly to reaffirm that most of them are a joke, but talked to one reasonable person who had an opportunity to talk about something important. Kinda related, I saw a sign walking past the Occupy Victoria area saying "It's not a protest, it's a process", and I think that's what this is about more than anything. Trying out new ways to bring about change that will benefit society as a whole.

^ was taking to long to load on my computer but for the most part the guy is spot on with a lot of things. Ya, he has some crazy ideas but everyone does. What he says in the beginning about the government getting to big is 100% right. Our government was supposed to stay small and be out of the hair of the people but its gone farrrr from that as everyone can tell.

I talked to each person about herman cain's 999 plan. Some people asked who herman Cain was, and others told me the tax plan was an awsome idea because then we only have to pay sales tax. I laughed in all of their faces.

Yes, there always going to be rich and poor. But we used to live in country where rich owned factory and make 30 times what factory worker make. Now we live in country where rich make money by lying about value of derivative bonds and make 3000 times what factory worker would make if factories hadn't all moved to China.

Capitalism great system. We won Cold War because people behind Iron Curtain look over wall, and see how much more plentiful and delicious cookies are in West, and how we have choice of different bakeries, not just state-owned one. It great system. It got us out of Depression, won WWII, built middle class, built country's infrastructure from highways to Hoover Dam to Oreo factory to electrifying rural South. It system that reward hard work and fair play, and everyone do fair share and everyone benefit. Rich get richer, poor get richer, everyone happy. It great system.

Then after Reagan, Republicans decide to make number one priority destroying that system. Now we have system where richest Americans ones who find ways to game system -- your friends on Wall Street -- and poorest Americans ones who thought working hard would get them American dream, when in fact it get them pink slip when job outsourced to 10-year-old in Mumbai slum. And corporations have more influence over government than people (or monsters).

It not about rich people having more money. It about how they got money. It about how they take opportunity away from rest of us, for sake of having more money. It how they willing to take risks that destroy economy -- knowing full well that what could and would happen -- putting millions out of work, while creating nothing of value, and all the while crowing that they John Galt, creating wealth for everyone.

That what the soul-searching about. When Liberals run country for 30 years following New Deal, American economy double in size, and wages double along with it. That fair. When Conservatives run country for 30 years following Reagan, American economy double again, and wages stay flat. What happen to our share of money? All of it go to richest 1%. That not "there always going to be rich people". That unfair system. That why we upset. That what Occupy Sesame Street about.
