does this piss off anyone else? At my school there was a protest today at 9 am waking everyone up. These people have no idea what they even are protesting. So annoying. Its literally just a big party for all the hipsters and people who don't contribute to society and are jelous of everyone who actually work hard and make money

Occupy Wall Street is a completely absurd thing to do. These liberal fucks are protesting things such as big business for example. They are protesting these "big businesses" and during their protest are using things such as cameras, markers, flags, clothes they are wearing ext. Without these big businesses that they are against we would have none of these luxuries they have to produce their protest. There would be no Sharpie marker to make a sign, no camera to record the experience, no designer clothes to look good. They would have nothing. I firmly believe that the people doing this protest are looking for someone to point the finger at in our time of economic crisis. Now this is just an assumption with no factual basis to support, but I assume a good percent of these people have no real idea as to why they are even protesting. It's a shame we lose so many people to the left-winged nonsense they are introduced to. With that being said I am sure a lot of people on this site have no real concern for where our country is and what kind of economic crisis we are in.

People who believe this is what the protests are about are completely missing the point of the protests. They're not protesting corporations. They're protesting the lack of accountability of corporations in terms of their contributions to current economic situation. Bank of America had upwards of 10 Billion dollars in profit last year and they spend our tax money to avoid paying taxes on it. They're protesting things like asking where the missing 18 BILLION dollars from the stimulus package.


I'll say it again. We're not looking for free handouts or to take down corporations as a whole, we're looking for corporate accountability, fair trade, and economic/environmental sustainability. Is there something wrong with that????

i just dont see this protest going anywhere really. Yes its a huge shitstorm but come on. I think these people should be protesting the real problems being the government. Yes bailouts had to happen, and yeah these companies arnt doing shit with the money, but why did it have to get to this point? There should have been more regulation to prevent such problems

They are protesting that 1% of the nation holds around roughly 25% of the nation's wealth. They are arguing that the 99% (the hippies) are the individuals paying for these corporate bailouts (via the fed), which essentially comes out of their pocket. What happened as a result of these bailouts? CEO's got raises, and more jobs were cut. That is why they are protesting.

Personally, I am apart of that 1%, and I feel extremely lucky to be. I am the 1% supporting the 99%, and I don't give a shit about percentages, but there is A LOT of fucked up shit going on in America today....

There is a stat floating around somewhere that says in the 1980's there were 50+ media outlets where you could get unbiased information. Nowadays, there are only....4? (ABC, CBS, CNN).

Please read other news sources than the aforementioned three. When the reporter says 'The dirty hippies look unorganized,' who told her to say that? Just because she DID say that, now millions upon millions of people will automatically agree, and start holding certain prejudices against Occupy.

In short, I believe the fed is 'Too big to exist, and too big to fail'. This has resulted in a lot of problems for the 99% who keep having to bail out these huge corporate fat cats.

Follow occupy on twitter. That is not a biased source.

actually i am an economic and finance major studying this exact stuff in school right now(im just a kid in school learning though...what do i really know). I also build houses with my dad so if you need an idea of how that works I could probably help you!

You actually hit the nail right on the head with your post. Part of my problem with OWS is that everyone is just out meandering around with signs that say STUFF but give no ideas. If you are going to protest give us ideas on how to fix things.. dont just yell all day about how fucked up shit is, we all know shit is fucked up. I am not urging in this thread at all that our government and banks arent fucking up... I am arguing about the ideas and the place of this protest.

I'm sorry, but there is no way you can speak for the group as a whole, and thats why no one takes this serious.  There is zero specific goal and a million broad goals.  Whether you like it or not, protesters are being interviewed and bitching this and that.  Kids are saying publicly that they should be provide a FREE college education.  Others are protesting Transgender rights and think transgender procedures should be covered by Obamacare or some bs.  These are just two examples and I realize that, but there is absolutely no clear reason for the protests.  That is why this is such a joke.

They want free secondary education, free healthcare, jobs for everyone (regardless of immigration status or criminal background) and free mass transit for all.
I think OWS's view of a right vs a priveledge is blurred.

Here is their latest list of demands:

Jobs for ALL - A Massive Public Works and Public Service Program

We demand a massive public works and public service program with direct government employment at prevailing (union) wages paid for by taxing the rich and corporations, by immediately ending all of America's wars, and by ending all aid to authoritarian regimes to create 25 million new jobs to:

Expand education: cut class sizes and provide free university for all;
Expand healthcare and provide free healthcare for all (single payer system);
Build housing, guarantee decent housing for all;
Expand mass transit, provided for free;
Rebuild the infrastructure—bridges, flood control, roads;
Research and implement clean energy alternatives; and
Clean up the environment.
These jobs are to be open to all, regardless of documentation/immigration status or criminal record.

I haven't paid much attention to this, however I do agree with occupiers who say that college funding should be improved and or free. Higher education is important for everyone, but is unobtainable for many because of the high cost of schools. They are out to make money now, not provide something better for people.

It opens up by saying how the "multiple factions have been......." and this is what they are working on.

And the site that i got that from and Henry Blodget the guy who runs the site is in support of the OWS moevement.

I worked hard to pay for my education and it would be extremely frustrating to see the upcoming student body get it all for FREE.

I say make post-secondary education free, but make entrance exams and requirements extraordinarily difficult. Thin out the numbers a bit. Make college a privilege rather than being thought of as a right.

Hell a good majority of the people I see in class and around campus don't belong here. Some people act/are at the intelligence level that it might as well be middle school all over again.

If you look at any movement, there's going to be dumbasses who join "the cause" just because they can or use it to push their own agenda, whether relevent to "the cause" or not.

I don't care how faux news, CNN, or any other major media outlet spins this whole thing. I've been waiting for years to see the world stand up against the global corporatocracy and government corruption. People have begun to wake up and protest all over the world EXCEPT in the US. Why is it that it's OK, and often encouraged for people to protest everywhere else in the world, but when the US citizens decide they want to stand up for themselves, they get ridiculed by their own people?

Yes, the Occupy movement needs better leadership, yes it needs more direction, but there's so many things that need to be fixed that people have just gotten fed up with it all and want a massive shift in paradigm. I have absolutely no problem with promoting such a positive global shift, and this global wake up call so-to-speak amongst the masses has been predicted to happen right around now for YEARS. I'm glad to see it coming to fruition and I hope that good things come out of it.

why make entrance exams extremely difficult? Half the kids I went to college with were only good at memorizing what the test was going to be about then throwing it up on paper and getting a good grade..ive never been a good test taker but i've busted my ass to get good grades and enter grad school, i dont think tests are the best way to weed people out

I definitely agree with you that the majority of people in college dont belong there...i saw it 4 years of my undergrad and im still seeing it now as I get my MBA

good point. I couldn't think of a better means. I think a better way to do it would be some via papers or something similar based on questions that require a true understanding of the subject.

Thats actually one of the things that bothered me the most coming back to school in the US after going to school in London. (studying history...I assume for other majors it would be different.)

Over there I was graded more leniently, but my final papers demanded research, and a total understanding of the topic. If you hadn't been reading and taking notes, you'd be lost. And the profs were more open to debate and differing ideas.

In the US however it's mostly dates, people, places, and theories. All are important...but memorized rather than learned. You can cram it all in 2 or 3 days.


I probably put more effort into 1 paper I wrote about the Holocaust for my london university than I have for all my classes in the US combined. And yet I still excelled in the US.

Look at European countries like Norway where they have free college education and one of the highest standards of living, one of the best health care systems, and hot woman everywhere.

who can't afford to go to college? pretty much anyone can get federal and private student loans... It's the motherfuckers who don't have to pay their shit back that fucks everything up, GI billers, sports scholarships, parents paying. Tuition is high because it can be, schools see young people as blank checks, and when it's not your money who gives a fuck about the value right? (I mean I'm sure you do, NS is the nations infallible elite) Give everyone a free $10k to buy a new car and you'll see the list prices jump by the same amount.

I'm not being selfish, I know what you're saying and I admit it would be really nice for the U.S to have a system like Norway. Unfortunately, it can't happen in the blink of an eye. If you want tuition to be free, then tax rates will go up. Nothing is free..

I live in Canada and tuition is much cheaper then in the U.S and I don't understand how students are supposed to afford college. As I said in my previous post, it would be nice for the price of tuition to go down instead of being completely free, and see how it goes from there.

This thread really shows the problem with OWS. There are so many factions of dissension on either side that nobody knows what to argue about.

My views are this (as if it mattered): I don't think the government should pay to keep a business in business. And I don't think the government should pay for college tuition, healthcare, social security, or other "entitlements" that I'll eventually pay for.

I go to the University of Pittsburgh-Main Campus, the most expensive public (state) university in the US. I understood when I applied that I was going to have to take out loans to pay for my education. I understand that upon graduation I would have to pay back said loans. I understand that even though my dad has an excellent income and is a single parent, it's not easy to put a child through school. BUT I made the choice to go to college. Sure, I could have gone to another school that was less expensive and received scholarship money, but I didn't want to sacrifice my education.

I look at some of my fellow students who don't take college seriously and wonder what they are even doing here. I don't want the US to pay for my tuition because just like everything, the education system would be overloaded and then completely taken advantage of.

if this happens im going to seriously flip shit, fuck me for doing the financially responsible thing and going CC for my first 2 years before transferring and getting a sweet scholarship covering half my tuition. being 21 and only now having to take out student loans. also fuck da haterz ill graduate from a private 4 year college with a degree in economics with only 14k in student debt.

This is a load of bullshit man. Wealth is not finite. No one is hoarding it. You can create more at anytime. And it's not the "nations" wealth it's individual businesses and citizens who fund and make possible the arms of government. None of those 4 news sources you listed are non-bias either...

I know you mean well but I disagree I think we have to many kids with useless feel good college degrees and no skills. I don't think ever one is cut out for college at least not immediately after high school and more people need to be studying at trade schools and learning solid marketable skills. People are taking out huge loans to go to college as well and if they choose to get a fluffy degree and it doesn't pan out skill wise they will never pay them back...
