Pow Ski Virgin

I'd like to change that this season with a pair of JJs
Just have a couple possibly obvious questions

I imagine one should buy them bigger than park skis, but no sure. Im a little taller than 5'9", would a 175 be alright?
Also wondering if pow skis loose their rocker over time, like park skis can loose their pop. In other words, will these skis work as good as good as they did a season or two after getting them?

get 185s, if anything they'll get more rocker i think? the only way i can imagine a pow ski loosig rocker is but underrotating heaps or backflips and switch front flips, which is retarded anyway

thanks mane, but I've pretty much have already decided the ski I'm looking at - Armada JJs

I'm just deciding if a 175 or 185 is more appropriate for me
Im 17, pretty much 5'10", and like 150 pounds

Also just interested if the ski's performance will deteriorate the longer I ride it, or If I'll be fine riding it 2 years from now

185 for sure. I'm your height and a bit heavier, and the 175's felt incredibly small when I rode them. Honestly if I were getting them, I would be considering the 195

not even a little. park/cambered skis lose thier camber anbd pop because you are weighting them in the opposite direction of the camnber all the time.

Pow skis last for fucking ever...EVER!

I would say if you think you will grow a little more and possibly put on some more weight then definitely go with the 185, unless you really need a playful and quick ski for trees or something, then maybe consider the 175. The 185 will be much more stable and float better though and as other posters said, pow/reverse camber skis definitely ski shorter.

If anything i would say they will be come slightly more rockered over time because when you are flexing a ski it is going with rocker and against camber. As the post above me said, the reason that skis lose their pop is because the camber gets less and less until they are flat camber or sometimes even a little rockered if you ski the shit out of them.

As already suggested go with the 185 cm. Keep in mind that the effective running edge is much shorter on a rockered ski. So to counteract this (to ensure stability in variable conditions particularly at higher speeds) you will want to add length.

one more question I was thinking about.

I do tend to ski a lot more trees when there is pow then like cliffs and stuff.
Would a 175 be better because they would be more nimble, or would the 185s still handle fine in the trees?

There is a common misconception that a ski needs to be short to be nimble. Guarantee a ski like the JJ in 185 will be tons more nimbe in the tree's than a conventional ski in 175.

this all over the place i have 185 jj's and i love em to death 6' 1" 175lbs aggressive skier. you'll have a blast on them

so you are a fair amount bigger than me
would you have rather gotten 195s?

I'm pretty sold on the 185, but if they are perfect for you, Im thinking they might be a bit big for me.

My pair from last year was a 164...

5'11" 165. I have skied several days on the 185, perhaps the best ski for a osq I've ever ridden on. I wish I could try the 195 though, the 185 has never felt long enough.

Here to give you an reassurance that 185s won't be to big, i'm 5'7" and about 150 lbs and I ski 184 Surface New Lifes, 179 Surface LL2s, and 178 Moment Rockers. I would never want anything shorter then them and I live in michigan. I've skied 178 S7s and they felt scary short at high speed and their very similar to JJs.

I'm considering putting an AT binding on em - and as with pow skis - have absolutely no experience
Looking right now at markers duke and baron

Do AT bindings effect normal riding much, and any other info about them would be sweet

i ride JJs with marker barons. great setup, very versatile. touring capability but still strong enough to knock around in firmer conditions inbounds.

after 2 seasons the slidy part of both toepieces cracked and fell off, but marker replaced it for free with no hassle.

nope, the only area in which i think the weight matters is that it is a little more tiring on long tours. if you wanted this setup primarily for all-day touring then youd want something lighter like a dynafit.

touring bindings are of course always a little higher than alpine bindings, making them slightly less stable for groomers and park. but thats not what you want a jj for anyway.

i think i cracked the toepieces because i do a lot of nose butters, which puts torsional pressure on the toes (and probably a little more of it with a touring binding since its raised). but again, this only happened after 2 very full seasons and was very quickly handled by marker.
