Replying to The old, Free phone charger at a hotel trick...

Anyone ever try this? I need a new charger and I have tried calling two hotels to see if they will let me get a charger from the lost and found box. I was hoping they would just be like "Sure come on down and take a look."

Instead they are asking last name and when they stayed. I am unable to provide this information because I am lying to them.

Has anyone successfully done this? I am contemplating going in and just asking in person. But I don't want to look like a fool.

Any advice?
