Buying Used Audi ... Have Questions!

So i decided on getting the audi (2007) and the car looks very nice to me , but i have a few questions when buying. Is 50k miles too much to be being a used car and also how hard is it to mount a ski rack on the a4? any response would be appreciated. thanks!

Is this your first time buying a used car? because 50k is an amazing deal for 18 thousand on that audi. most used cars come with around 70-150k miles. you have a deal. on the ski rack, idk how easy, but just ask the seller, if he says he doesn't know, then ask if you can try to put one on.

why don't you buy yourself a new car with 0 miles on it if you're willing to spent 18k? You won't have to worry about any prior maintenance problems or any upcoming issues with mileage.

That's fairly low in terms of mileage, and I'm not sure it's that simple to mount a ski rack on the top, my father owns one and he's always just shoved skis in the back so I would come to assume that you can't? Not too sure though

i actually have 22k to spend so this is a great deal because i can throw some great modifications onto the car, and i wouldnt want to buy a new car because i wouldnt be able to find a new car for 22k that I would want to drive and that would suit my needs(great in the winter, even better in the summer). that sounds kind of spoiled ahah, but i worked hard for that money at my bar mitzvah so fuck the haters.

trust me, for 22k you can definitely find a better car than a 4 year old audi with 50k miles on it. And i think you'd be better off saving that mod money for the repairs you're eventually going to have to do. Fixing an audi is by no means cheap. Well....that and gas. But by buying a car, I'd assume you've probably figured out that you'll need to buy gas.


Don't mean to rain on your parade or anything, and not hating on the money you've got to spend. Just more or less saying what I would do.

Do that then. My dad bought a 2008 A4 a year ago and since then has upgrading it with new rims, entertainment system, audio, and bought a ton of stuff from the S-Series.

well i don't know what exactly you're looking for. But for 22k I would definitely look into Volkswagens and (the NS favorite) subarus, amongst others.

How old are you and how much research have you put into it?

16 and a lot. I have gone through so many different cars and dissected them that you wouldn't believe it. All the research I have done points towards Audi being great in the snow, great safety, and pretty quick. VW are very nice yes, but also come at a price. A brand new 2012 Jetta is around 34k I believe and Subarus also cost a pretty penny if you want a nice one. If i got a Subaru it would prob be a WRX or a WRX STI which are hard as fuck to find used and out of my price range new. A plain impreza is no fun.

I just used the build function on the VW site, and put literally every single feature on a 2012 jetta and it cost less than 30k. And that's website price. Anyone with half a brain could easily cut a few thousand off that at a dealership.


I think the problem is that you're thinking of having fun in a high end car, whereas I'm thinking cost efficiency and a car that'll last you years.

I think you might be right there. I've grown up driving BMW's everywhere and that is what i have learned to drive in so i guess that have a bias towards high end german cars. Also my sister got an Audi as her first car which is why im more leaning towards that.

But I'll warn you right now, once the bank of parent comes to a close, (assuming it does. I know for some sad pathetic individuals it never does) you will be thinking economics. Gas ain't free, and neither are repairs, and when you see your wallet shrink every time you start your car...you'll be thinking differently.

but yea ive been working for 4 years now at my moms company and my parents tell me a lot that they are not just going to hand everything to me on a silver platter so i get that. Im not a leech attached to my parents wallet ahah, i pay for most of my shit other than necessities and utilities.

what bothers me the most is that the new generations of drivers are getting cars that don't need work, and if they do, they never even attempt it themselves...


and they never have to drive absolute shitboxes that barely run. You want fun, try driving an old saturn down a windy road and simultaneously losing steering, braking, and any electric power courtesy of a problem with the front axle. (namely that it fell off)


Half the fun me and my friends have now is talking about the wretched experiences we had in our old beaters. Miserable cars that we pushed beyond the edge...

and by the way, awd is severely overrated if you ask me. There's this belief on this site that unless your car is awd, you'll never make it to the mountain.

I once drove that same saturn (prior to the accident) through 6inches of snow in storm, up and down hills and barring maybe 1 or 2 instances i had absolutely no trouble.


Learn to drive properly, and you'll be fine regardless of weather.

^This guy is sooo right! Im 17, my first car is my 97 subaru impreza which I got for $1100. I just replaced my heater core (which was a bitch) because I was not gonna pay a shop $800 to fix that $40 part. Also had to fix my back lights too, with my free time between my minimum wage job and school, and this kid got $22g to spend on his first car, wtf! My advice, buy a "rice burner" civic for $4g, and pocket the rest.

Good car, good deal. I prefer Jeep 4x4 for snow however that car is pretty sweet man. Definitely would be a great purchase. 50k miles is not very much at all for that vehicle.

Best advice i can give is that you'll probably regret dropping so much of that money on a car right now. Don't get me wrong, Audi's are dope and all (not trying to claim, but i have a 2001 2.7t A6 so I know a reasonable amount of information/have experience) but once it starts having problems, which all cars do, you'll be wishing you did something a little less tangible with all that cash. I'm not saying don't get a baller whip, but its definitely worth it to make some memories with a portion of that cash that aren't related to a car which you won't have in 10 years.

Once you put 50k miles on that car you'll have to do timing belt, if not before that. It's a guaranteed fix for Audi's and requires a LOT of work that i bet you can't do. Not trying to rain on a parade at all but it's a hell of a lot nicer having a car with a timing chain versus a timing belt. My advice, while i fucking love my Audi to death, look at Infinti g35x/g37x. I believe (do your own research to clarify) that they have timing chain's, and they're engine puts out more hp than an A6, and is supposedly one of the most bombproof engine's Nissan has ever made (3.5L v6 thats in the maxima etc.).

ps. paying for premium gas is such a bitch, i realize i will pay more to fill my car and get worse mileage than an A4, but it's still like $100 to fill a tank for me. When your parents stop paying for your gas, because they will, you'll be hating on that thing. I know I could barely afford to fill mine if I drove farther distances more often, and by no means am I broke. Just keep these things in mind when your looking, if you want something fun that you'll drive hard then it's going to cost more to fix/fuel it imo.

some legitmate advice right here for sure your going to regret spending that much money right now...but you could definatly pick up a nice car for a little cheaper. But sick car none the less...id rather have an audi over infiniti any day. Infinity's are so over rated in terms of being a high end luxury car

Are you saying that you would be able to afford $94 to fill up your tank but $100 breaks the bank?  With current national averages it costs $3.86 more to fill a 14 gallon tank with premium fuel rather than regular.  This should not make or break your decision when purchasing a $20,000 vehicle.  If you have one less drink at the bar, that will be enough to make up the difference for two full tanks.   

Also, it is very easy to put a ski rack on any car.

I'm saying that compared to a car that takes regular filling a car with premium sucks. My last car was an Infiniti g20 that had a 4 banger and only required $60-ish of regular for a tank. Obviously with a car that requires premium you pay for what you get which is a lot more fun, but paying $40 more per fill-up to go a shorter distance is shit for sure in my opinion. In all honesty I don't know if I think the amount of money I put into the car gas wise is entirely worth having an Audi, but maybe thats a just me, although I'll admit the 1.8t or 2.0t in the a4 the OP is talking about should have better milage

the fact of the matter is investing 22k on a used Audi is a fucking straight up poor choice. Its quite clear from your thread here that you are not a petrol head or have the ability or the tool cache to be considered a wrench turner. I have owned an audi a4 previously and it was a fucking awful investment and overtime became too hard to keep the car running on the road at 100 percent. I am a VAG mechanic and know all the problems that these motors and cars have and personally, I would never own one again unless it was covered under the limited warranty. The 2.0 bpy engine code has serious oil consumption issues that VAG have still not really figured out. VAG thinks it could be from a poor PCV system, but at my work alone we have replaced 4-5 motors due to suspected piston ring wear on the cylinder walls which allows oil to flow past the seal of the piston rings and burn in the combustion chamber. The VAG spec for oil consumption on the BPY is fucking downright outrageous and not acceptable, its half a liter per thousand KM.... which if you followed the service book and kept doing oil changes at schd. intervals... you would have no oil left at your next oil change. Audis also use a very shitty suspension set up called quadralink suspension with is 4 control arms and ball joints per wheel, and these control fail constantly, so you must be ready to have alignments and control arms replaced every 1-2 years. These motors also have problems with chewing up timing belts and tensioners. The high pressure fuel pump has been chew up camshafts aswell, I have seem camshafts with fuel pump lobes completely worn off. These are just a few known problems with these cars and if you feel as if you can deal with these, power to you.

The older you will get the more you will realize you can dream big and want a very nice and mint car but in real world conditions, you will always get the scrapes and dings on your car and there is no avoiding it. I bought a brand new car and in less than a month of owning it, it has 2 fucking decent size door dings.

Make a good investment, buy a decent car that isnt overly expensive. Buy a car that you arent going to be on a first name basis with your dealerships in the area. Do not modify your car because after you spend a the thousands of dollars to do it, youre going to realize it will do nothing for you. Its still the same old car you had prior to modifications.

so you trust a bunch of ns'ers who are predominantly your age, or younger...over a mechanic with 22yrs experience? The man apparently works on audis and has for more than 2 decades...if he says it's not a good idea to buy it, I'd avoid doing so.

Quite frankly I'm not sure you're mature enough to be driving.




Here's what happened. And i know it because I nearly did the same thing. You looked around at a bunch of cars, then got stuck on one nice one. And everyone with experience is telling you it's not a good idea to buy it, but you're still stuck on it, so you're looking around trying to validate your decision to buy it.

thats pretty awesome dont get me wrong but VAG products have a massive amount of company only tools. To give you an idea, the tools have 2 to 3 different prefixes to start out their tool number and each one of those prefixes has 5xx-1xxx tools each. You can farmer rig a fair amount of tools, but there is certainly situations where they cannot be. At my work we get independent shop sublet repairs very very often and we also get the cars they cannot figure out. I have have factory training and they send me across our country 2/3 times a year for training. Our scan tools are not for sale to the public and can do more than you can even imagine, I can activate certain function tests and use the scan tool to run diagnosis on some pretty vital things where as indie shops are left guessing. At work we have boatloads of comebacks from indie shops. These cars getting too difficult for indie shops to fix without our company only scan tool and tool selection. Im sure your dad is a great mechanic, im just saying there is just too much now a days. The newest q7 has up to 130 computers in it and these cannot be tested through traditional methods to give you an idea of whats coming down the pipeline.

Im actually stuck on a lot of cars, but i run one through my parents whenever i find a nice one. the cars im looking at are jeep grand cherokee, subaru wrx, nissan altima, and audi a4. I just found, what i though to be, a good deal on an audi so i wanted to get some opinions on it other than my fathers. its not that hes aware of specific problems of the longevity of the audi, its that he has a philosiphy that 20k miles on a car is too much and i am trying to sway him otherwise because the cars i want are not affordable at that mileage.

subaru impreza's are 21,000 for 4 wheel drive heated seats and moon roof and all that shit. better winter car than audis less money for maintence (european cars are like double the amount for any repair)

i mean great deal on a luxury car but yea....

not true persay. While the subbie will be cheaper to fix parts cost wise, the labour for alot of the repairs will be inflated due to engine layout. Flat engines almost always have higher costs of labour due to engine platform.

Jeep grand Cherokee - after 100,000km the engine and suspension starts to fall apart, family had one for about 4 years and after 100,000 I watched my parents throw about 6+ g's into it. The 5.7 is a dope engine that you will not be able to afford, and the 3.7( I think?) just isn't the same. WRX- I don't have much experience but they certainly do break, turbo's are a bitch when you have to replace them Nissan Altima - don't go for it hahah, if you want Nissan look at the Maxima ( and if your boss find the 4 seated version, I looked and you can definitely find them around. 2 heated bucket seats in the back, power sunshades, Nissan reliability with the 3.5L. Best choice) Audi - the a4 isn't exactly super powerful in the long run, it s fun and good looking and might get you a superficial bitch or two, but it's still just an A4 ( s line is a different story)

Looks dope, they're fucking fast and have great interior's, the only issue with s-line audi's (that i know of considering i havent done much reliability research) is that they're normally driven hard (as they should be), meaning that things go wrong faster. If I had 19g's I might be tempted but the gas in that thing will be terrifying I feel. If you want an Audi just go get one, but don't be all upset if/when it breaks down on you (realistically any car will, audi's just cost more than others to fix). If you want Audi advice ask WikiWiki, from the stanched car thread I'm pretty sure he had an s-line A4.

if you want to save a couple thousand on the car you want to get, dont get it through that site you keep looking at. buy it from a private seller. then maybe you could afford a car with 20k miles on it that will impress your dad. although a private seller may mean you have to check it twice before knowing if its upto par with your standards, im sure you dad would be fine with doing that since he seems so keen on you getting a good first car
