Anyone ever heard of Savants?

There's apparently around 100 of them known worldwide, they are essentially genius' in their own way, who have extraordinary capabilities for a human, amongst a mental or physical disability. Been watching several documentaries on a few Savants, particularly Stephen Wiltshere or Daniel Tamnet. Opinions?

My brother's roommate was apparently a savant. He was an interesting kid to say the least. He was nice though

yes 60 minutes did a few specials on a musical savant Rex, and OP i am not sure you understand the quality of life some of these people have. Rex can replicate pieces of music he has heard once note for note exactly, then even play a Bach piece he has heard once in the style of Mozart.

even with all this Rex cannot do his own velcro shoes, i dont think this is something you should wish for and you should get a better understanding of what exactly savants are. and there are many many many more than a 100 worldwide. Rex attends a school of about 20 other boys and girls his age, all musical savants

you sound like you know more than me but Im pretty sure theres different levels of savants, prodigy savants are the highest level and his estimation of 100 seems accurate.

yeah i just checked out the wiki on it, where i feel most of knowledge is this thread is coming from. i thought he meant in general. i still do not think it is something he should wish for at all

Wrong. Some of the problems they are asked they have never been asked or tried before. Although for most the number pops into their head, it's not because of repetitive practice.

If you're suggesting he just memorized all the 10 digit numbers multiplications, you're absurd.  To be able to do that he would have to remember 1.8 x 10^19 different calculations.

With this many to learn, even if he were to learn them at a rate of 1000 every second for every second of every year, he would have to live for 570 million years to memorize them all.

hell no, shitty example but its like turning the brightness on your tv all the way up and everything else all the way down, yea you've got the brightest tv but its still unwatchable

I honestly have a very good understanding at this point, and in terms of wishing I was like them, I did not mean to suggest I wanted their quality of life or their disability but rather there extraordinary talent and capabilities. Although it is said that 1 in 10 autistic people are savants, there are many different levels of autism which range in severity, which could render an individual unnoticeably disabled or severely impared. Take a look at Daniel Tamnet, speculated that he is infact autistic, but has learned to cope with everyday normal life. Even Stephen Wiltshere is learning and growing out of his autistic boundaries.
