how well does true center mounted skis do in powder/ backcountry!?

just got my atomic punx team center and not sure if that was a bad idea cause i still ski some backcountry.

Probably will make you lean back a lot more. Makes the ski feel short when you typically want a longer ski if you are going to do some serious back country.

I'd never mount a powder ski at center. I know some people mount somewhere in between if they plan on landing switch very frequently, but that is a very very small audience.

skied my new lifes 2 forward of centre all of last year (due to other mounting holes in the way) and they were awesome

now will be skiing klint kryptos at ski length centre all yearrrr

a centermount allows for easier turn initiation, and for some interesting slarving abilities in pow once you get used to them. A lot of people cant imagine skiing pow centermounted because its just not what theyre used to. You are able to get a lot more forward on a pair of skis that is mounted a bit further back, making them more stable and controllable when charging. Yet even still if you look at a lot of backcountry/freestyle pros they will be shredding lines on centermounted skis. One person that suprised me to know that he mounts his benchetlers at center is Sage Cattabriga Alosa, seeing as hes bit more on the big mountain side of things rather than just freestyle

the thing with park skis, and especially punx, is that they have a thinner waist. The punx have a waist of 82 compared to something like the hellbents with a waist of 132 (i think). With a bigger waist width, you will have more surface area to stay on top of the snow. Of course there are other factors that play into how a ski handles in pow; side cut, camber, and stiffness for example.

what i have found with park skis in pow is that it makes a big difference to have them a little back. you will get more surface area in the front so it will make it easier to stay on top of the snow. it might be a little harder to ski pow but you can defs do it. i have not really skied punx so i could not tell you the details on how they preform.

that was def. not a bad decision. symmetrical skis are to be mounted at dead center! the punx skis awesome centered. mounting the binding back would make it ski strange. and a 82mm waisted ski will ski bad in pow no matter if you put your binding 2cm back. its a diferent story with pow skis, but you def. dont want the punx mounted anywhere but center.

got my 189 hellbents centered and theyre awesome. still so much float, no leaning back at all and it reduces the tails washing out

I currently have some CoreUPT Candide Pow in 186 mounted with the binding at -3cm from center. I was thinking about mounting them at true center, do you think they would still perform well in pow? (102mm waist) I do a like of freestyle and enjoy riding switch on both hardpack and pow. I ski a lot in the Alps and do not ride pow every day. Thanks

I have tried it many times, and I would highly recommend not doing it. If you think about it, when your skiing switch your center of gravity moves from under your feet to somewhere out in front of your toepeice. If your center mounted, this would be effectively in the "tailgunning"position which creates more instability and more difficult switch landings (particularly off cliffs).

So after trying many different positions, I would say go around 3 back from true center. This will give you the best turn initiation and stability going backwards and forwards.

You really want to mount a pow ski near the recommended line for optimum skiing. Something like the Bent Chetler (or our YLEs) are meant to be a pretty centered ski, so you can ski it at center just fine. A ski like our CRJ, on the other hand, is meant to be mounted back from center to ski correctly, and mounting it true center gets you a severe performance penalty when skiing forward.

For landing/skiing switch in pow, I always feel like the tail rocker has more impact on ski-ability rather than the mount point. Moving your mount center can help some, but not as much as the shape of the ski does. Also, keep in mind you'll be skiing forward A LOT more than switch on your pow boards.

This so much! There is a weird trend where everybody thinks its cool to say they're going to be riding switch in pow, when really I guarantee they really won't. Maybe like 10% of the time or less? Maybe the occasional landing or something, but its getting old seeing all these "I ride pow switch" crap.

Don't mount punx anywhere other than centre, they are symmetrical and meant to mounted ONLY at centre. Punx aren't a pow ski so don't try to make them one. Anyways, pow is fun on any kind of sticks so I wouldn't worry too much about pow performance with your skis unless you ski it like, over 20% of your time.

If pow performance is really important to you then you might want to consider building a quiver or getting something like more versatile like blends or kung fujas.

the skis in that video were not centered, but he is also skinny as fuck, and rides 192s which is alot different than some kid on ns that weighs the same as Sage center mounting some 170s size pow skis
